Any Non-Beatles Fans?
-
It might sound like a silly question, but are there any non-beatles fans here? It may be hard to imagine (It's easy if you try....sorry couldn't resist) but are there any fans here who became Macca fans after the Beatles or are perhaps bigger fan of his solo/Wings work? I ask because I have seen many comments in the "rock show" section about how his recent tours have been too Beatles heavy. Or people wishing he would tour with a setlist that is exclusively Wings/solo work. Is this because you think it would just be an interesting twist on a live show or is it because you aren't a fan of the Beatles to begin with? No judgment here, just general curiosity. Anyone here not like the fab four?

Happily, the answer seems to be NO.

good thread to start, and a good question at that but im a beatle maniac so i would have to say no good luck on your thread ; )
-
Sometimes it sure seems like it.

I think we all LOVE the Beatles but this *IS* a McCartney board so we tend to lean in that direction.
-
I'm definitely more Macca (in general) leaning but also like the Beatles... But I will add that if some how, in another dimension, Paul McCarteny - with his entire catalog from the Beatles through now - was entirely a separate entity apart from the Beatles, Paul would be my favorite, but I'd still call myself a fan of a 'Paul-less' Beatles with John, George and Ringo (and yeah, I know - imagining that alternative reality isn't an exact 'science' since they often helped each other out on songs that were generally associated with one member or another...but you get the point...I hope )

Ooh, Beatles without Paul. That's intriguing. If they each still had the talent they ended up with ultimately by having Paul with them, I would think that would be a fantastic group. But without Paul, none of them or the group itself would have been as good as they ended up being. So it is really unimaginable.

Yes. Paul also made a similar observation in his recent Letterman interview (without bragging, of course).

I would consider myself first and foremost a Beatles fan, have been since birth. Paul is my favorite of them but I discovered his solo stuff through the Beatles.

I do remember an old joke in the 80s. "Dad, is it true Paul McCArtney was in a band before Wings?" then it evolved to, "Dad, is it true Paul McCartney was in a band?"

A few years ago, my nephew asked, "Are any of the Beatles still alive?"
-
My mom keeps thinking Ringo is one of their sons. I don't know why. I guess she mixes him up with Dhani whom I've seen perform twice. When Paul first appeared on Oprah, my mom and I were watching and squealing and my 6 year old nephew asked us, "IS that one of the Beatles or something?"
-
I'll always remember when my 93 year old Mom was in a nursing home. I walked in wearing a Beatles Tshirt & she asked "who are those 4 guys?". I asked her who she thought they were & she said "The Beatles!" LOL.

Me! I do not like the Fabs!!! I LOVE them!

I am a big big Beatles fan, however, in answer to your question... I think there are a number of people who love the Beatles, but perhaps they were born after the Beatles broke up. They may have grown up listening to Wings or even later things, including Paul as the Fireman and Paul doing classical albums like Ecce Cor Meum, or Ocean's Kingdom, to name a few of his non Beatle projects. Paul's catalog after the Beatles is so much larger, than the one he did while he was with the other three Beatles. And while he may be most known worldwide, as a Beatle...there are many hit songs, or just more current favorite songs, that Paul has written since the Beatles. I thing some people, myself included...would love to hear more of Paul's more current material, that was done after Paul's Beatle days. Paul will always be most famous worldwide as a Beatle, and I'm sure some people come to the shows expecting to hear a lot of Beatle songs and would be disappointed if they didn't hear them. However, there is so much post Beatles material, Paul could easily do a show with more current songs that are just as well known ( and even some great ones that are not so well known) and less Beatles songs. Apparently, Paul also loves the Beatles songs, and that's easy to understand. It's not that we don't love the Beatles...we do!
It's just the sadness, that some of the great great Paul/Wings/Fireman songs deserve to fill the air and our ears with their melodies and all of our fond memories of them...some of them being before the internet, and so we may have missed the tour the first time around, and never got to hear our favorite Paul song
Some artists with long careers, have done things like Elvis Costello has with his Spin the Wheel Tours, where a wheel with 50 songs on it is spun, and FATE determines the set list. That was pretty darn awesome, as you watched the wheel, praying for your favorite song to be played!! I also went to a Tom Petty show last year, where he was requesting Deep Tracks from the fans on Facebook, and they would then choose some requests from the fans, and play them, for 4 nights in a row, at the Beacon Theater in NYC! You knew you were going to a Deep Track show, and so you knew it wasn't going to be a greatest hit show. I really enjoyed that as the band played three of the four that I had requested!!!
and the setlist also varied every night!! I heard songs I never in a million years, thought I would ever get to hear, and that was wonderful for me, and other big fans to be able to hear some "Wish List" songs. So yes, LOVE the Beatles from 50 years ago,
But also wish there were more songs for "The Wings Fans", the "Paul McCartney fans" and even the "FIREMAN" fans!!!

For me, it started with Paul solo. My older brother bought BotR in '74, I was seven years old, and hadn't heard of the Beatles yet at that time. After BotR I was hooked and got all the solo albums after that one. A few years later I bought my first Beatles album, the compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music and... I didn't like it at all! I even gave it away to some friend. But that all changed by hearing the blue compilation album and I became a huge fan. Nowadays I regard myself primarly as a Macca fan. Just because he's still making music. I know every single note of the Beatles songs by now and I like to hear NEW music. The Beatles are history (not meant in a negative way), Paul is the present.

Just wanted to stop in this thread to see if there would be any people who would be the opposite of me. I generally like Paul's music when he was part of The Beatles and don't look beyond that too much. Not that the stuff that came after was bad in any way. By the way, I have never quite been a big, big fan of his holiday song "Wonderful Christmastime". Nothing wrong with it, it's festive and upbeat, that's all good. But hearing it just leaves me wishing that The Beatles had recorded a Christmas song that would have gone on to be a timeless classic.

Beatles fan I was speaking with a friend the other night he was saying John was a better musician I had to disagree and go with Paul Love all the wings stuff some great songs
