I am a BIG Beatles fan, but also wonder about McCartney doing TOO MUCH Beatles. It is a tough call, he WAS in the band and produced some of his greatest work back then. Still, out of a fifty year career, the Beatles were seven years of that career. It seems to me it would be reasonable for McCartney to have his show be a third Beatles, a third Wings, and a third solo material. Doing a show that is two thirds Beatles and even performing songs by the others that aren't really tributes (Please Please Me, Day Tripper) seems unnecessary. Yeah, it is cool and fab, but why not do some solo or Wings tunes instead?
If you break down Paul's fan in a similar fashion (Beatles/Wings/Solo Material) how do you think the demographics of the average crowd at one of Paul's concert's would break down? Unfortunately for those who want to hear more solo or recent stuff, I think they would be in the minority. I would guess that most crowds would be 60% Beatles, 35% Wings and 5% solo career with a lot of overlap between Beatles and Wings. The overwhelming majority of the fans at the concerts want to here those Beatles and Wings songs that have become classics more than anything else.
And that is why the set list is what it is. I'm not complaining, it just brings up questions such as: are these BEATLES concerts or McCARTNEY concerts? It is nit-picking, Ringo also does a lot of Beatles, at least the ones associated with him. If I can nit pick a little more, since these are advertised as Paul McCartney concerts, I think he should play Beatle songs he wrote, or wrote 90% of. I LOVE I Wanna Hold Your Hand, but it really was a 50-50 effort with John Lennon. I don't think he should play that in concert. And I think Paul could do something cool like dedicate a song to John and George (Here Today) and be done with it.
We all have songs we would like to hear that he never plays for one reason or another. "In My Life", "I Feel Fine" and "Help" are three songs I'd love to hear but he's never played them at a concert I've attended.
IN MY LIFE is one of the songs that John and Paul disputed over who wrote it, though the fact that John sings lead and it is about himself, points to it being a John song that Paul wrote the high harmony to and that's about it. Maybe he hwlped write the melody. I GUESS I could see him singing this song as a nod to John. Why on EARTH would he play I FEEL FINE or HELP?? Those are 100% John songs, and Paul has so many great songs he has written that he has never performed.
It doesn't matter why I would like to hear them. I understand why he doesn't sing them. The point is that everyone has songs they would like to hear. But everyone doesn't complain about it every time a tour is announced.

Most people want to hear Paul McCartney songs though which is a reasonable expectation. He didn't write or sing the songs you want to hear so it's completely different!!

I agree the "oldies" are special as I too was watching that Sunday in February many years ago. It is really amazing to me to read how the majority of the younger fans do not want to hear the Beatles songs and would prefer the solo material. I am thinking are you kidding this is the Beatles music the greatest band in rock and roll history, but I do understand it,if you did not grow up with it and experience "Beatle Mania" then you go with what hits your sweet spot. For me give me all that old stuff and more.
you keep saying the younger fans don't want to hear the Beatles. I think they totally do & that is why Paul does it because the money is coming from them too. Especially with Rock Band & I tunes. I am probably older than you & the 1st time I saw Paul was with Wings although yes...I loved the Beatles from the beginning. But my money bought a ticket to Wings! So yes, I would like to see an equal amount of songs from each period. He is so selling himself short. SERIOUSLY. He is still FAB...and more.
I am speaking in General, I doubt there is a tremendous amount of any given audience (concert that is) who got hooked on McCartney or the Beatles because of the video games, a lot of them probably could not afford to do his concerts. I am not saying an,y I am saying a lot of them. I too want to hear a lot of the Wings, but it just seems that there are a lot of people here who don't want any....I do not think he is selling himself short I just think he tries to cater to the vast majority of the audience and in my opinion, based on what I have seen at the shows I attended to this point, they are older not younger than 30. By the way I did not see Paul until 2002, I was in the military for a while and never was in the right place at the right time but I still would want to hear the stuff i grew up with along with the wings material, not just one or the other. I am not exactly young at 54 so are you older?? LOL ...notice I did not ask your age...

I am sorry, I was agreeing with a comment about the oldie songs from the 60's and could not believe the people who constantly complain about the Beatles material he plays. I did not intend for the conversation to go that direction. I also think there is way too much complaining about the set list. I would like to see changes but I take what i can get.

True. But those are Beatles songs which he helped write, even if he didn't sing lead. He was my favorite Beatle. He has a new band - a great band . I would like to hear him and his new band sing those songs because this is the closest I would ever get to hearing the Beatles perform those particular songs. Oh, and Ringo, if you are reading this, you need to come to Tulsa!

I've seen him a number of times, but these three stand out: Feb 5, 1990, Pittsburgh--I lost my Paul virginity that night LOL He had a cold and sounded hoarse and there were rumors the show would be cancelled. I was like oh dear God, no! I had waited for 13 years to see him, as the WOA Tour in 76 was denied to me by evil, cruel parents. When he came out on stage, I literally almost passed out--I got this huge head rush and I wasnt consuming anything July 20, 1990, Cleveland . This remains my absolute favorite time I saw Paul, and proves you dont need a good seat to have a memorable time. I was somewhere in the middle of the football field, standing on a chair. It was hot--REALLY hot--and as Paul played "Let It Be', a soft light rain began to fall. I looked around the old stadium and saw 80,000 people with their lighters held aloft, singing along. It was a beautiful, spiritual moment. Cleveland is my hometown and seeing Paul play there was special. He addressed the crowd by telling us that Linda's family was from there and we all cheered. Of course, Linda was also at this concert, which makes it even more memorable. Linda is gone, the old Municipal Stadium is gone too, but this will be forever in my heart. March 31, 2010, Hollywood Bowl. An amazing concert--both for the location (it doesn't get much better than the Hollywood Bowl) and the set list, which included Helter Skelter. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would hear Paul play that live and hearing it echo off the Hollywood Hills was incredible! Paul sounded awesome and it just felt loaded with nostalgia since the Fabs actually played there.

if he strips the set list of classic Beatle songs
I don't think anyone is suggesting he does that... Can't Buy Me Love We Can Work It Out Fool on the Hill Birthday What You're Doing Here There and Everywhere Good Day Sunshine Rocky Raccoon Martha My Dear For No One Are all songs he has either never done or not done for a while and I simply suggest some other songs like Get Back, Drive My Car, Back in the USSR to name a few have had their day (for now) and it's time to step aside and let some of those other Beatles' classics be played. Nobody is going to be upset about that, keeps the fans who have seen all the recent shows and the casuals happy. He also has a long list of great solo songs that he hasn't played ever/in a long time... Listen to What the Man Said Silly Love Songs Uncle Albert Backseat of My Car My Brave Face This One Hi Hi HI etc etc Something like this would surely keep everyone happy? Keeps plenty of Beatles tunes while keeping plenty of variety for the people who have seen the last few shows. Good Day Sunshine Jet All My Loving Juniors Farm You Won't See Me Ever Present Past Letting Go What You're Doing Lady Madonna Listen to What the Man Said Magneto and Titanium Man 1985 The Fool on the Hill The Long and Winding Road Martha My Dear Yesterday Rocky Raccoon We Can Work It Out Every Night Young Boy My Brave Face Here Comes the Sun (George Tribute) In My Life (John Tribute) Eleanor Rigby Back in the USSR Too Many People/She Came in Through the Bathroom Window Coming Up Silly Love Songs Maybe I'm Amazed Let it Be Hey Jude Encore 1 Can't Buy Me Love Birthday Live and Let Die Encore 2 Blackbird Band on the Run Golden Slumber/Carry That Weight/The End
I agree with most of your invented set list, I think it's a good idea, in fact I made a thread about alternate set lists. The fact is it would hardly change more than half the list, the only exception being the US Tour, but it's true that it's not necessary to play the same over and over. Maybe it will be nice if you saw him once or twice, but I guess there must a lot of fans now, that are having doubts about paying to see almost the same show from 2 years ago. So this time, at the very least, it has to change, not because of the european leg, but for the US/Canada and Brazil legs.

1989 - Three nights at the Forum in Los Angeles! Opening night was awesome, Beatles songs were great, and on the second night, Stevie Wonder came on stage and sang Ebony and Ivory!
I was at that Stevie Wonder show, also! I believe we'd heard a rumour that Stevie was there, or somebody I knew saw him, I forget now. So when Paul did "Ebony & Ivory" in the main set, we were wondering if they would sing "What's That You're Doing" when Stevie came out??!! Nope - "Ebony" again. Was still very cool, tho. I also remember that show because during the guitar jam in "Sgt Pepper" at the end, Robbie, Hamish and Paul were all pushing against each other so hard that Paul actually fell over, onto his back, legs in the air! He was fine but it was scary for a second to see him hit the stage. Other favorite tour memories for me are all of the 1979 UK shows that I went to. Cherished, those are.
