I seem to recall some fighting when I joined in 2001/2002, but not as much. And if there was fighting, it was stopped by the mods pretty quickly. Or at least relatively quickly.
I wasn't really a full contributing member then, though, and only went on the forum when a concert I was attending was upcoming, so I'm no expert. We have some more...colorful...people on the boards now, though.

The difference, I think, is that people used to have arguments but still respected each other. The people on the board these days don't seem to want to be bothered with each other. They don't give people a chance.....but along with all the fights we used to have, there was also alot more fun because people actually liked each other. I had made so many friends. Now I only know a few..... As for the mods....they were on their toes night and day.....you think yesterday was bad? That was mild compared to things that used to go on.

It's definitely a skill to be able to argue and still respect the people you're arguing with.
I'm blessed to have a bunch of friends and colleagues that know how to do this. 
I've actually made quite a few friends on the board now, but maybe only two or three back in the day. But you're right, not a lot of folks now seem to be able to argue then let it go. Hopefully we'll collectively figure it out. Big hope, I know, but hey, why not shoot for the moon. -
