What's More Unfortunate?
-
Let's discuss both sides here... I have a very strong opinion that I'll share but I in no way intend to offend anyone or want to start an argument. Like everyone here I just want to share my opinion. I have made some of my closest friends through Paul fans and we can all agree that Paul fans are the nicest and best fans in the world. So let's keep that in mind... So what is more unfortunate?? -The fact that Paul has for the most part stuck to a very similar setlist over the past few tours? OR -The fact that people continuously whine over the setlist/his voice? MY WHOLE HEARTED OPINION: The facts are the facts. Paul McCartney is a 75 year old man who can still hit more notes than I'll say 98% of the people on this board. If you expect to go to a McCartney concert and hear him sound EXACTLY like he did with The Beatles or Wings then DON'T GO and don't complain. As for the setlist... Listen, I love eating at Wendy's from time to time after a long gig. I was so mad when they changed the fries years ago. Boy I'd love to have the old fries again. Did it make me complain on the Wendy's board? Did I stop going? NO! Because I love the burgers, because I love the fake-chicken (Sorry Paul and all Veg's). My point is this; NO ONE here is a fan of Paul's solely based on what he plays at his shows. We love Paul for who he is, what he has meant to all of us our entire lives, or for some new fans just recently. With John, George, Ringo, Wings, and his solo career, he has created a soundtrack for MILLIONS of lives. Not just for my life, and not just for yours. Does everyone have the right to voice their opinion just like I am right now, for the first time after years of keeping it to myself? ABSOLUTELY. But C'Mon People (ah thank you) how many tours have some of you now made the same comments about the set? Has it done anything? Not really. Did you still buy tickets for this tour? Of course you did because you're going for a lot more reasons than just a setlist. We're all DIEHARD fans of Paul and everything related to Paul. I think sometimes we have to just remember that we make up maybe 5-10% of the people at each of those shows. He may be making the set list for 90% of the people there, but we can all admit once we leave, 100% of the people are happy. Could he throw out some "never before played" stuff? Would it be INCREDIBLE to hear? YEAH!! Look at how many different songs we've all heard since our first tour? How many different songs is that? I bet A LOT! Let's be grateful for what we all have been given by Paul over the years and still today. I'll end this as I'm sure the Birthday Boy would... I share my feelings with all of you with the absolute most PEACE and LOVE!! Hope to see you all very soon, so we can continue to build more memories together as THE BEST FANS IN THE WORLD!!!

It's unfortunate that people whine. Nothing else needs to be said.

Agreed. I regret being a bit negative earlier, since the never-ending same complaints over and over caused me to lurk for years and now dip in and out, yet it's easy to get caught up in the negativity. Though I might go a bit more out of my way to see him in additional shows if I feared missing something special, I'll continue going -- and totally loving going -- as often as possible, even if he's just reading a phone book, and he's lightyears from that now. He's really still the best out there, and it's the "casual" fans I hear that from the most!
-
It!s a nostaglia act now and there is nothing wrong with that. His voice is on a decline now however we accept that. Go see a 77 year old Neil Diamond or an 83 year old Frankie Valli if you want to hear a well aged voice

The way I look at it is that's he's doing 11 songs I've never seen before, two being some of my all time faves. While a lot of them are not my favorite songs, he's still Paul McCartney, and it's still an incredible show - AHDN - Can't Buy Me Love - Letting Go - Temporary Secretary - In Spite of All The Danger - Love Me Do - You Won't See Me - The Fool on the Hill - Four Five Seconds - I Wanna Be Your Man - Sgt Pepper Reprise

This is a really good point. I didn't see him in '14 or '15, so last year there were songs people were unhappy about that I hadn't seen yet and was happy were in there. I was also overjoyed with the new additions he made last year, since I love "first time live" stuff no matter what stage of his career it's from. You Won't See Me is a huge fave of mine and it was worth it just to see that! I'd also never managed to intersect with a Birthday performance, so I was super happy to catch that, which was a show highlight for me. It's really not fair for those of us who've already seen him on this tour to be disappointed by the current set, because how many people see the same artist multiple times on the same tour? Most artists I've seen do almost exactly the same set throughout a tour, even when that tour spans years. My main disappointment is just the middle years gap in what he's performed live, and my not seeing him before 2002 extends that for me, but otherwise I've been pleased with how I've been able to add to my setlist stats almost every show of his I've been to and had great fun doing so!

oh I forgot Birthday make that 12 new songs! I wish he would add Back to The Egg songs and solo songs, but it's just a fantasy at this point

Ok. Let me start off with your premise that if you would like his set list to have more songs from his career after 1980 it is called whining, I call it a difference of opinion. It is quite obvious you wanted to start argument and offend people because you started this thread and you used the word "whine" which is insulting. Myself and others have stated many times we expect a Beatle heavy set list but wish he would mix in more songs from his solo career of almost 40 years and is the music we have bought. Darn, we have some nerve actually liking his entire catalog of music than just his Beatle/Wings part of his career - lol . Mr. McCartney is the one who says things like he is going to "refresh" his set list or make it "minty fresh". If he is going to say those things, than he should IMO really make a bunch of changes. BTW - what was the production enhancement that caused the show to be delayed 2 days and a good fan on this board to lose a couple of hundred dollars to change travel planes (she was a good sport and still had fun at the show but it still was not fair to her !!) As for your Wendy's analogy, I am willing to bet you an order of fries (ha ha) that they got complaints when they changed their fries. As for his voice, I don't expect him to sound like he did even 15 years ago and that is why I think certain songs like MIA should be dropped because he does not do it well anymore. It is a very difficult song to sing and requires a young and powerful voice to do it fairly well. There are plenty of songs he can sing for Linda besides this one. Once again, this is not whining, it is constructive criticism. Let me end this by saying I am true to my word. I said unless he really started to play more songs from his solo career that I have never heard live I would stop going and I did, last time I went was in 2010. I still buy and enjoy his new albums and looking forward to the next one. I am glad people going to the shows are having a great time. As a fan, I wanted to check in and see how the first show of the tour went last night. IMO it is basically the same as the Tokyo shows so no need to really follow the rest of the tour.

If my memory serves, the "minty fresh" quote people keep referring to from a few years ago, was never actually made by Paul in the first place. It was by Brian Ray.

Ah yes, let's hold a major international press conference and inform the entire world that the back-up band guitarist misspoke in an obscure random interview.

You hit the nail on the head, he has fantastic catalog !! Myself and others wish he would actually play more of it. Once again, I have no problem with him playing 25 Beatle/Wings songs ( the hits), that is what 99.9% of the people came to hear. I just wish the remaining 10-12 songs were changed a bit more and he did some solo songs he has never or rarely done live before that are wonderful songs. (exp Take It Away, Little Willow, That Was Me, I Can Bet, Early Days, My Brave Face etc).

Just curious. Is it negative to want Mr. McCartney to play more solo songs in his set list after giving people approx 25 Beatle/Wings hits every concert? I actually think it is a compliment that myself and others want to hear more of his wonderful music past 1980 live. It keeps getting mentioned each tour because some of us hoped each tour it may change. I have given up now, his set list is what it is - lol.

I agree. I heard rumors of changes, but I guess it was wishful thinking. I would have been ecstatic if he would have only dropped Temporary Secreatary and added something different. That song was a COMPLETE UGH last year! I love Paul and I also have the right to be honest! I saw the opening show in Miami in 2005, with no clue about the set list. It was so amazing and incredible...some great surprises and additions from the 2002 tour!!!! It seems those days are gone. ð?? There have been no significant changes in the last few years.
