i dont know what to cook to help destroy my cold....
-
Hello all, I find myself getting colds ALL of the time. problem is, I just cant seem to get rid of them... especially now that I am a vegetarian. I used to just make a quick bowl of chicken soup but now, I cant exactly (and never want to) do that ( unless I want to make myself even more sick but that another story that you really DONT need to hear...) what meals do you make yourself when your battling a cold?

Nothing different. Just take generic Dayquil and Nyquil tablets to fight your symptoms and you'll be better in 2 weeks. Are you young? Reason I ask is because once you have a cold virus, you can never get that particular virus again. As you get older, you get fewer colds usually because you've already contracted most of the viruses. Warm liquids like soup can help you feel better and get out the mucous that is clogging you up. Nothing really "cures" a cold unfortunately. I had a cold last month for the first time in over 5 years, but I'm betting I'm a lot older than you.

What about a winter veg soup like Butternut Squash. I found this recipe but I'm sure some supermarkets might have a vegetarian one
Easy Butternut Squash Soup Yield: 2-3 persons Ingredients: 1 medium butternut squash 2 tbsp olive oil 2 potatoes 1 onion 1 litre vegetable stock salt and pepper Directions: Method: 1. Chop butternut squash, onion and potatoes into cubes. 2. Warm a large pot and add in olive oil. Add in onions and cook till soft. 3. Then, add in potatoes and squash. Cook for a minute or so. 4. Add in vegetable stock and allow to simmer for about 30 minutes or until potatoes and squash are soft. 5. Using a blender or food processor, blend the soup until smooth. If too thick, add a bit of water. 6. Season with salt and pepper.

ginger tea, lemongrass tea, veganism (dairy contributes to a lot of unwanted mucous buildup, apart from being the cause of several other ill-health problems) also, be sure to have vitamin c intake from citrus fruits as a regular part of your diet
-
Wow, that soup sounds really really good!
thank you MaccaMeri!!! ill give it a try tomorrow! ( its a little late to be making soup at 12 at night) don't worry Rahil, ive been drinking lots and lots of teas, especially Lemmon and honey tea. I think ill try lemongrass tea, a little hard finding lemongrass at times, but anything can help guess
I should pick up Veganism, but its extremely hard enough at the moment living in a greek and Italian family who just want you to eat murder by the bucketloads... I don't really drink or have milk since It can cause lots and lots of stomach problems ( oat milk is so so goood!) and I rarely have other dairys as well. don't worry, every night I have a vitamin c tablet and I eat strawberries by the bucketload ( its said that a punnet of strawberries has more vitamin c than some number of oranges)
-
I hope the soup works out well. Homemade butternut squash soups are really comforting for a cold. Carrots and Swede should be similar. Even pea soup would be good
I have to agree Oat Milk is really great. Since I gave up dairy milk this summer it's been one of the better alternatives. If you hear any tips about how to go vegan, I'd like to hear. I can only guess its a gradual journey of eliminating foods...

avoid the honey. not good to the bees.

as it should. it's for baby cows, not for humans.. but unfortunately most of the world doesn't realize that. even the enzyme lactase which is needed to break down lactose is not present in humans beyond infancy.. human milk is for humans during infancy just as other mammals produce milk for their own species of offspring during infancy.

not necessarily. i was vegetarian from October 1993 until 2003. i went on to become a vegan literally overnight in October 2003. the only reason i was not vegan before then was that i DID NOT KNOW what happened in the dairy industry against the innocent cows otherwise i would have boycotted milk/dairy long before. but as soon as i found out, i made a decision to not be part of this abuse and murder and immediately stopped using such milk/dairy. it can be just as simple as that for anyone. the cries and suffering and deaths of innocent animals should make it more abrupt of a change than gradual if one actually feels what one becomes aware of. as long as one is aware of something being wrong/evil (i.e. the atrocities against our innocent fellow creatures), the way is set if one's conscience is awake and working.

Yes, some people can go cold turkey(as they say), but sometimes it's actually better for some to allow your body to get comfortable with the change in foods.
-
not better for the animals.. the sooner people stop consuming their flesh and secretions, the better for the horrid business of exploiting them will be less funded/boycotted. also, the more one continues using/consuming from that, the more one is prolonging one's 'taste' for it. the important issue is the animals' right to not be abused and killed and prolonging that with 'gradual' is still being part of the problem.

I do understand your point and your feeling. If a gradual elimination of animal products leads to vegetarian or vegan lifestyles, I don't feel it can be discredited.

but it is not the path to be encouraged. encouraging that an actual 'option' causes too much lax when it comes to a real issue of bloodshed continuing due to human being's greed for flesh and blood. so there is surely 'discredit' by being 'halfway' on a 'fullway' issue as life and death. it helps no animal to be 'halfway' about this. go vegan.
-
I may go vegan but I'm very happy with my vegetarian diet and lifestyle as I know you are with your vegan diet and lifestyle. Some people can wake up one day and never eat animal products again; others might do that and it lasts a short time as going cold turkey fails for many. I wouldn't have gone veggie if I hadn't gotten used to eliminating foods one by one. But that's how I did it and it worked.
-
well the cows and chickens aren't happy about 'vegetarian lifestyle' they and their innocent children are being abused, kicked, beaten and murdered by the minute due to too many people sticking on a 'vegetarian lifestyle' for too long, ESPECIALLY AFTER KNOWING what goes on. i don't see what more it should take than KNOWING what atrocities one is contributing to to not want to fund and be part of it. of course this goes fully for those who are non-veg*ns, but it applies just as well to 'vegetarians' (consuming dairy and/or eggs).
-
Trust me Rahil, I do really want to go vegan but at this min its way way to hard.... especially when my relatives don't shut up about the so called "benefits" of eating meat and animal products ( honey to them is like GOD or something, that's only reason I had a honey tea) ( apparently eating beautiful creatures and things that their children should be having is what we were meant to do according to my relatives but I can call Bull on that). If I told them I went vegan, oh man, id be crucified. once I can " get out of this place", ill become the biggest vegan ever. Im waiting for the day when I can do that... Also, sorry for the long-no-message period, my mail wasn't working so I thought that no one was saying anything, don't know how I thought that was possible... just realised, I managed to make a beach boys reference without trying

i understand the tight situation you describe Ring0, but do not ever give up trying even while in the same household (after all, you have quite a few years to go before leaving there, and the difference is in those years what you start doing and start showing to those who oppose, for the sake of what is right, and perhaps influencing those others as ell) certainly, one by one though, you can in your situation SAY NO to each of these things. the 'crucifying' you speak of won't be literal and your standing up would give yourself even more confidence to face things for what is right. you don't get strong without going through these trials, and you already know about the atrocities, so start and don't stop. of course, as you would have seen, my replies in the above posts were directly in response to MaccaMeri's posts (who i feel safe to assume is not in your 'dependent' situation based on her words which indicate that it is conscious prolonging rather than being a child within a household who has to 'try')

Subject being 'what to cook' I find eating lots of raw red onion works well. Since 1990 when I gave up meat, I haven't suffered many colds at all.

Yum! I didn't know that red onions helped cure colds! Thank you for your suggestion Morse_Moose! I love myself some raw red onion and garlic, even though no one wants to go near me after ive had some
I am a bit of a youngin so that's probably the main reason im sick all of the time, I guess its better than being sick later on though.

Hope it helps Ringo64 - maybe try a bit of yoga too
