Paul McCartney?Anfield Liverpool Sound Concert (Running commentary while listening on the radio) 1. Hippy Hippy Shake: What an interesting choice for a concert opener. A nod to the Live at the BBC shows! Wow, we might get a ?new? show. 2. Jet: This one is NOT a surprise. This always been the 2nd or 3rd song to open a Macca show. My wife thinks he has always sung the line ?Jet? a bit off-key. No difference here, but always good to hear. 3. Drive My Car: Gosh, I?m sick of this one, but I guess it keeps up the show?s energy better than ?Flaming Pie.? 4. Flaming Pie: Oops, spoke to soon. A little different than previous concert versions, with harmony vocal in response to the lead vocals at the end of the song (but pretty standard take, nonetheless). 5. Got to Get You Into My Life: OK, let try to get the crowd pumped. 6. Let Me Roll It/Foxy Lady: Arghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know, he says everyone wants to hear the hits. When, exactly, was this a hit? What is wrong with him? If you think the show needs this kind of groove, bring back ?Letting Go? or something else like it. 7. My Love: Shaky vocals. At this point, the number of Wings/solo songs are greater than Beatles tunes. Shocking. 8. CMoon: And now he?s telling the stupid story behind this lame song. Talk about just sucking the air out of the place. With his catalog, he pulls this out for this type of big show???? 9. The Long and Winding Road: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ 10. Dance Tonight: Nice version of this song. Thus begins the acoustic section of the show 11. Blackbird: He really struggles with this one. Doesn?t anyone have the guts to tell him he can?t pull this off anymore? 12. Calico Skies: This is a good ?un, that he sings well. 13. Spent my early life in Liverpool (Not sure if this is the title??): New song, primarily driven by acoustic guitar and accordion. Ringo?s ode to Liverpool was much better. 14. I?ll Follow the Sun: Does the same false ending, three times (the last one sung in a kinda boozy voice. Kinda inspiring me to start drinking heavily as well) 15. Eleanor Rigby: He?s going through the motions now. 16. Something: Did you know that George was a really good Ukulele player? Does he really think anyone in the crowd hasn?t heard this story before? Unbelievable. 17. Penny Lane: Stops the song after the first line, so he can start over and ?get it right.? Wow. How original! Wait, the song is over and now he?s inviting a special guest to the stage. Could it be Elvis Costello? Ringo? No, it?s Mr. Dave Grohl. Now, that is worth the price of admission. 18. Band on the Run: This is for the Wings fans out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 19. Back in the U.S.S.R.: So much for the Wings fans out there. 20. Live and Let Die: Please, bring Olivia and Yoko on stage to sing backup vocals. Do something different?. anything. The sheep are cheering though. 21. Let it Be: At this point, I think I?d like to go watch Hillary Clinton?s Puerto Rico victory speech. I expect more surprises there. 22. Hey Jude: Great, the bathroom break song. Seriously. OK, he?s left the stage, but I?d like to predict the encore. ?I saw here standing there? and ?Yesterday.? No reason to go out on the limb here. The BBC commentators are praising the show as spectacular. The guy is saying he has never seen anything like the pyrotechnics that accompanied ?Live and Let Die?. OK, so there was someone there tonight that has never seen a Paul McCartney show. 23. Yesterday: He still sings this one well. 24. A Day in the Life/Give Peace a Chance: Well, I guess that?s what he meant by ?a few surprises.? Oh my God..he screwed up the words in the bridge. He caught the bus in seconds flat twice (and mumbles a couple of unrecognizable words as well)!!! No wonder he never does anything new. He?s so shaken by that screw up that he?s not even going to finish the song, rather he?s now made a clumsy transition into ?Give Peace a Chance.? 25. Lady Madonna: Mentions the screw up to the song?s lyrics for a Day in the Life before launching into Lady Madonna. How embarrassing. Dave Grohl is back. How exciting. 26. I saw her standing there: Goodnight! I don?t care how many people may be coming to a show that have never seen Paul McCartney before (it can?t really be that many, can it?). His lack of originality is pathetic.

I just hope he's getting all these songs out of his system so that his next tour will have a completely original set list.

I had a ticket to go to the Liverpool sound gig,but after seeing my premium seat at the Kop end, i decided not to go and get a refund instead. Having been a fan for 33 years and been to every tour since the last Wings jaunt,it really is sad to see Paul going through the motions in his concerts. It really hurts me to say his shows are so predictable now,it's as though his post Beatle career has been a complete waste of time. Even if he does ignore his solo songs a few more different Beatles tracks would inject some needed brio into the show. I never thought i would be the one to critisize Paul openly about his live shows on a public forum.I feel quite sick about it. If he decides to go out on the road again i'll more than likely go,but with a little apprehension.I have never been disappointed at any shows of his before, but it doesn't look good for future gigs.

Boycie, My sentiments exactly. When I heard Hippy Hippy Shake to start the show, I was very hopeful that we would maybe get an exciting change of pace. But after hearing predictable song after song, "going through the motions" is exactly how I felt about it. I found the show very boring, frankly. With the amount of money Paul charges for his concerts, he owes the fans more that just the same old thing.

I always defend Paul to the hilt if anyone criticizes him unjustly. But the critiques of his recent live shows are right in there views. After releasing two really strong solo records over the last few years, it seemed he was out of a artistic rut,but this hasn't transferred itself to his gigs. I never thought i would say a Paul gig was boring, but the Liverpool Sound show was, apart from Hippy Hippy Shake and a moving Day In The Life.

you know what guys what did you expect! i actually thought in general, tonight was pretty good. the best live version so far of 'dance tonight' a nice 'short'version of 'liverpool' the absolute highlight without a doubt was the version of 'something'..tear to my eye and i dont do that sort of thing. yea he screwed up the lyric on his own bit of 'a day in the life',but i thing he just about got the setiment accross.hippy hippy shake was a terrible choice for opener however, really bad vocals. okay the usuall suspects were wheeled out and by and large he sang okay, although i also have become a bit tired of most of them. the crowd werent though, they loved it and that was what paul set out to do,not please some hardcore solo fans!

Love Paul, love the new records, and do love his concerts but the concerts can be so much more special. Paul loves to say he wants to do the hits becuase it pleases people. Well, Let Me Roll It, he's been doing since 76, he's only omitted it on one tour since. Coming Up sort of gets interchanged from one tour to the next. Flaming Pie, again? C-Moon again? Aside from Coming Up they weren't hits Listen To what the Man Said, #1 hit which hasn't been done since 76. Silly Love Songs, ditto. Uncle Albert, ditto. These are #1 hits -- does he really think people are going to throw tomatoes at him and say Paul, where's C-Moon? Band on the Run which is his most famous album -- he has Helen Wheels, top 10 hit from it, never done. And we get Let Me Roll it again and again. If we did a poll and tested other songs from that album like 1985 versus Let Me Roll it, I'd be surprised if 1985 didn't win. As for the Beatle stuff he hasn't done stuff like Paperback Writer since 93. He's only done For No One on one tour, ditto She's Leaving Home. Some he hasn't done ever like Rocky Racoon, Lovely Rita. We are going to get trashed by people who say complaining is sacriledge -- and don't get me wrong I'll go to his shows and have a good time. But its hard not to notice that many if not most big artists not only mix it up from tour to tour more than him but they even mix it up from night to night in the middle of the tour. The Stones change things around, Springsteen and to a lessor degree U2. Are those bands just more nimble and can handle rehearsing more material? Paul does give a long show and goes full out. Too bad he doesn't seem to notice that plenty of his fans go to his shows each tour, plenty of his fans cared about his solo career as opposed to just the Beatles.

This is the dumbest thread I have ever read in my life. First off, as you admitted, the show HAD several surprises. Dave Grohl, A Day in the Life/Give Peace a Chance, and the Liverpool song written in Japan were worth the price of admission by themselves. A member of Nirvana AND a member of The Beatles shared the stage together, for chissake. This concert was Macca paying homage to Liverpool. He's not going to pay homage to Liverpool by playing obscure B-sides to please bored fanboys that have seen him live 32 times. There's no way you can call him an oldies act when he continues to produce quality new music. Hell, he was up for a grammy this year for Only Mama Knows, and MAF is an incredible album. Macca has always been the most accessible of all the Beatles, and he tries damn hard to please the fans. Fortunately or unfortunately, the majority of McCartney fans are Beatles fans first and foremost, which means he's going to play his "hits".

Paul's mentioned that he wouldn't want to go to a Rolling Stones show without hearing "Satisfaction" or a Prince concert without "Purple Rain," which I understand. But I honestly think "Hey Jude," "Yesterday," and "Let It Be" are the only songs that he "has" to include in his setlists. No one will feel cheated if they don't get to hear "Drive My Car" or even "Long and Winding Road." So really, Paul should just include those three songs to please those who've never been to a Paul concert, and then feel free to experiment with his other 30 choices.

Some Macca Fans are pathetic! They whine and whine like schwines All the songs he played at the Liverpool Sound Concert were all great! It was 100% a brilliant show!

Well, there's two ways of doing a setlist for a music living legend. 1. Kind of doing the same old things, kind of greatest hits live. Usual of Queen, and The Rolling Stones.... 2. Stick with some irrepleceable songs and changing the rest, even from concert to concert.... U2 stick with With or Without you, where the streets have no name but sometimes they don't even play one, but they play the same stuff every concert of every tour. Springsteen sticks with Born To Run and Badlands and Born in the USA, and rest is unpredictable every concert. And then there's Bob Dylan. Paul no way it's gonna do what Bob Dylan does with the songs... the plan of saving his "Holy Trinity" (Hey Jude, Let It Be and Yesterday) and changing the rest it's nice. Maybe doing the same setlist all the tour (a la U2) or maybe changing every concert (a la Springsteen). This is an isolated concert, so the list was gonna be predictable, no way the band are gonna learn a lot of songs for only one concert.... they play what they know they already can play well. Actually, they seem to have problem with the Hippy hippy shake... so Paul is not gonna play with the band something they've never played in a concert like that. Maybe one or two songs.

The majority of the people at Anfield tonight had never heard "Hey Jude", "Yesterday", "Live and Let Die", etc. performed live before. Just as the vast majority of people at the show have never ventured on to this website/message board. Any chance that the naysayers on this board will understand this and get over their fantasies that Paul will perform *their* favorite songs, while neglecting the greatest songbook in rock history? I don't think so... Fantastic show, Paul.

Like it was said, there's alot of people who have never had a chance to hear those songs live before and aren't as fortunate as some of the board members to have seen a live Paul concert many times. Why are you criticising his choices and performance anyway? I don't think fans have that right. If you're a fan of something, lo and behold it means you actually LIKE that thing. Leave Paul alone, some of us would be escastic just to see him perform live!

I see both sides of this argument, and I have mixed feelings... Of course, anyone paying to see Paul should rightly expect to hear the hits, including myself. I'd miss Hey Jude if he didn't play it. I have and will continue to pay to see him regardless of what he plays. However, when the years roll on and the same songs (with the exception of a few here and there) are played over and over and others are ignored, it does become a bit dull. Paul's been playing Something on the ukelalee since 2002. I love it... I'll always love it... but given the opportunity, I'd choose something new. I adore Paul... I'll go anywhere to see him, but I gotta admit, I'm not that heartbroken over missing this trip to Liverpool. Ok... stone me if you must.
