I thought it'd be fun to start a thread on Paul's forum about our rescued and/or adopted pets. Seeing that Paul is an animal lover, to say the least, it seemed appropriate. So, to kick things off, I've had rescued animals sharing my home with me for about 15 years. Currently, I have two rescued animals, a roaming dwarf rabbit named Oliver Twist and a soon-to-be-senior cat named Dante. Both own the house and let me live in it with them, as long as I give them plenty of attention and treats. How about you?

I had a teenaged female shepherd walk into my yard one day with a tin can stuck on her upper jaw over her nose. I had to reach into her mouth and bend my fingers into the can to push the lid down to get it off. I petted and cosoled her and nicknamed her 'Honey Pie'. I have a naturally strong grip, so I took the lid and pushed it down flat against the inside of the can wall and crushed the top of the can flat so that it couldn't happen again. I have done it to every tin can I have ever opened since. I went in and threw the can away and came back out and she was gone. 'This Dog Had Flown' ... Bless Her Heart!

        Peace On Earth Today Someday

Peace Will Come To Stay...Some Day

Never buy! Always adopt your pet. Just go to petfinder.com & plug in your info & they will find you what is available in your area. After losing our dog of 17 years I found one through petfinder. An adult dog that had been abused & was living in a foster home. She is my Lucy now. (lucy in the sky) We've had her for 6 years already.

Such a sweet story! I've made sure to cut up the plastic pieces that hold six packs together since seeing a news report about fish and birds getting stuck in them.

I never buy animals--I hate the idea of perpetuating the treatment they receive a puppy mills or iguana farms and such. With the overcrowded animal shelters in this country and around the world, there's no need to buy a pet. Give a homeless animal a "forever home", instead. 😉 I also haven't been on the look out for any animals, to be honest. They always find me.

Did you change Winston's name to Ono? I'm hoping that I find a beagle curled up on my doorstep one day, so that I can name her Beatle the beagle. How do the dog and cats get along, by the way?

HA no Ono in that name! We call him Winston Lennon Beatle the beagle is a good name. Well, Winston is a bit hyperactive and always wants to play, the cats not so much. They aren't having any of that and he's gotten swiped at a few times.

I've never seen a hyperactive dog get along with older cats before, so your Winston is in good company. Maybe the cats can sense a possible Ono in the home?

I got my Peach kitty from Adopt Your Best Friend at the Zoo day 8 years ago. That was such an awesome day too. It's when the shelters bring their animals to the zoo for people to adopt. My family went for a dog and came home with the kitten. My mom called to me, "I brought you a friend." I petted her. She looked up at me then rubbed against me and purred. She's been my pal since (and a little spoiled princess at times). My other two cats I've had were both adopted from homes.

We got a dog from a rescue home called Sally, unfortunately she died so we got another from a rescue home called Chanelle. She was beaten and left to die by Travellers before being found by the rescue home. She also died, but at least we gave 2 dogs a good/loving life before they passed on

I have never bought a dog before, or a cat or any other animal they just come to me. I go to the Humane Society and adopt them. The others I have had to rescue from abusive owners. Or they come to me for help as they have no home.

Same here. There's no need to buy animals when so many homeless animals need loving homes.

I feel the same way about my iguana. I only had her for a year and a half before she passed on, but she was rescued from a home where she didn't get much attention, and where she wasn't being properly cared for.

Has anyone tried foster care for rescued pets? I'd love to open my home to animals in need of temporary shelter, but worry about how my cat and rabbit would react, and also about how I'd react. I'm not sure I could give the animals away after I grow attached to them.
