Vegetarianism and Science Fiction
-
I was at the premier of the new Dr Who a few weeks back and there was a veggie comment in the dialogue that surprised me. The Dr and his companion found themselves trapped in a restaurant where they were being held alive and captive for use of their organs by cyborgs. Turns out the restaurant was just a front to trap innocent people. Scary stuff. The companion made some comment about it being a place of death and the Dr replied, "I didn't see you ordering vegetarian." That got me thinking . Vegetarianism has been a part of science fiction and quite prominently for a long time. I first learned of the concept from Spock in the original Star Trek. In fact, TOS brought up the subject many times from Spock eating meat for the first time in All Our Yesterdays to This Side of Paradise when Kirk saw the planet had no animal life. He asked the colonist what they ate and the leader laughed and said, "We're vegetarians."

This is slightly OT, but this past Sunday in the Parade magazine that comes with the newspaper they asked what famous person you'd like to have at your dinner table. I got online and said "Paul McCartney, but of course it would have to be a vegetarian meal." They actually emailed me back and said they thought he'd be a fun dinner guest!

I've mentioned it before but it kept getting lost, I learned about the Jain of India from an early Star Trek novel called Devil World. It was an education to learn about these people whom Sagan claimed, "Are the only group with a true reverence for life."

Doctor Who is not science fiction; it's children's fantasy.

Squid:

That's just being elitist. (and it's funny when sci-fi nerds think they can be elitist too). Children's fantasy has a place in Science fiction. ask any geek with kids.

and this is why, before the late 90s when we needed them to fix computers, nerds were commonly beaten up.
