Paul, Come To Australia
-
Hi Guys Just watched the last of the Oprah in Australia shows. It makes me feel so proud to be an Aussie when someone with the high profile that Oprah has, praise our beautiful country.. I mean, we all know how awesome Australia is. It is a pity someone like Paul can't see it. Bono loves it here and many other celebrities do too. And why shouldn't they. It is that best country in the world SO HOW ABOUT IT PAUL!!!!! Don't you remember things like Adelaide, for example, giving the Beatles the biggest welcome than anywhere in the world??? WE LOVE YOU DOWN UNDER. SO WHY NOT COME DOWN AND SAY G'DAY MATE!!!!!!! Cheers Chrissie

Why you ask Its pretty simple. Money when he booked 2 shows at the telstra dome in melbourne in 2002 they barely sold. The demand isnt there. If there was money to be made he would of come way before now. It is why he continually tours the states. Money Money Money By the way im an aussie to incase you thought I was an aussie hater.

It breaks my heart to see Pink continuously sell out shows, yet Paul had poor ticket sales back in 2002. I don't get it, I really don't. On a side note, hasn't the John Waters show about John Lennon been selling like crazy? I'm going to the show in Melbourne and I'm pretty sure it's sold out....granted it's not a stadium show, but still, there's definitely interest down under!

Very odd considering his 1993 Sydney Entertainment Centre shows sold out in world record time (back then), something like 6 minutes...but in 1993, the tickets were around $56-60AUD. The 02 show was scuttled almost before it had a chance. The Melbourne Herald-Sun ran a full page article with the banner headline, "Would you pay $500 to see Paul McCartney?" These were the diamond seats on the ground. Naturally the general idea (not helped by the radio talkback) then was that ALL seats were in that price range - which was simply not the case. $500AUD was a lot of moolah back in 2002... I think that was the reason he had trouble filling the concert (and the 2nd show) which would have happened had the first sold out.

The 2nd one went on sale but using the Bali bombers as an excuse just shocking . 500 dollars now is still a he'll of a lot for any concert . I wouldn't pay it Why you ask Its pretty simple. I gladly paid $500.00 per ticket in 2002, if fact I bought three, for me, my husband and my son. I would do it again in a heartbeat and I am sure there are many other Baby Boomers that would. I actually still have those tickets as because they were bought online, I did not have to return them. I still get them out every now and then and dream of what could have been!!!! I think enough time has passed since 2002 and there is another young generation that would pay to watch a Legend. The Press would probably still bring up 2002 because they basically havent got enough intelligence to think of anything else to write. I mean, The Man is possible the best artist/songwriter in the last 100 years. You would think they would find plenty of other things to write about him!!! Paul is a billionaire and I don't think he would be too worried about the cost of touring Australia. It is comments about 2002, cancelled for reasons we can only speculate about, that will stop him coming here.!! PAUL IN OZ 2011 Cheers Chrissie

The Australian media annoys me so, so much. I know it's like that all over the world...but geez. By the way, I'm an Aussie haha

Money is the ONLY reason he hasn't played here. It's always about the money, billionaire or not. Paul's not one to take a loss on a tour and he certainly doesn't pay for a tour out of his own pocket. No act does. Whilst he may have cancelled the 2002 show "out of respect for the bombings in Bali" he hasn't been back purely because the numbers don't add up for him. Why does he continue to tour the US? Because he sees it as a rich mine that he can plunder time and time again (not that there's anything wrong with that). If he hadn't cancelled or had come here afterwards it wouldn't be an issue. How many other concerts has he cancelled in his solo years? Not many that I can recall (Sheffield in 2003 comes to mind but it was quickly rescheduled for a month later). At the time, his press man Geoff Baker went to great pains to clarify the event was "postponed" and not cancelled. Eight years later we're still waiting for the "rescheduled" show and Baker has been given the arse! Given the unbelievable strength of the Australian dollar right now (it is on parity with the Greenback) production costs would be at their most attractive. That leaves ticket sales. The slow sales in Melbourne in 2002 and dwindling record sales here may well have spooked him into thinking he no longer has a viable market in Australia. Personally, I think that is rubbish. I think he could tour this country and fill 10-15,000 seat indoor arenas just as he does in the US. To quote the great man himself... "Come home brother, all is forgiven".

The Bali Bombing thing was a plain and utter lie. What better after a nasty event than to hold a show to uplift people. The excuse was a joke. The concerts were being financially backed by the government at the time. There was major uproar about this to. The government underpinning a music event with tax payers money. Secondly he would never play an arena tour in Australia , he would only come if he could sell out stadiums which I believe he cant do. Mccartney has a price tag on his head per show, which the promoters can only recoup by selling out stadiums. Look at his poor record sales in Australia . 1993 tour now seems all oh so long ago, things have changed. I remember that tour well I went to 4 shows even the audiences were crap. I saw him in 2010 3 times in the UK and what a difference. At the time, his press man Geoff Baker went to great pains to clarify the event was "postponed" and not cancelled. Paul's lack of record sales here I blame on lack of promotion. Memory Almost full is a fantastic album, one of his best in a long time. Do any of the radio stations play it? No!!!All they ever play of Paul's is Live and Let Die. I don't listen to radio much because of all the crap that is played now. Anyway, I don't agree he would not sell out a tour. The ticket prices would have to be a bit more realistic, but I believe he would do it. We can all just hope, I suppose. I have been a fan for a long time and love his music. My hope is to see him in concert again but if not, I have my collection!! PAUL IN OZ!!!! Cheers Chrissie

He cancelled one in the east of France in 1993. The October 18th still appears in the list of concerts on Paul's website but never happened. Fortunately, I went to the October 17th concert in Belgium.

The year before I was born -_- Just a question is it really difficult for musicians to come down? I mean we are surrounded by water and is really far away from anywhere

I mean we are surrounded by water and is really far away from anywhere I wouldn't say difficult. However, I'm sure before an artist plans any tour, they want to make sure it's a "money maker". Seeing some of the fan reaction to Paul touring there in the past (1975 and 1993) I wouldn't be surprised to see him returning to Australia soon. Lately, he seems to be visiting places that he hasn't been to in many years. _________________________ Macca Tours - '76, '89, '90, '93, '02, '05, '09, '10 Concert for NYC - 10/20/01 At Pauls' NY "secret" gig - 6/13/07 Change Begins Within Benefit NYC - 4/4/09 Ringo & Paul 7/7/10 Philadelphia / Soundcheck - 8/14/10

Even smaller bands that you'd barely think even have fans here are touring nowadays. Seems it isn't a problem if someone really wants to do it!!

I was at that gig the picture was taken. It was parramatta stadium from memory. Very cool seeing mull of Kintyre .
-
Yep, second concert at Parramatta stadium and the last Australian gig of the 93 tour. In those pre-internet days, Mull was a huge, huge surprise. I remember Ian Meldrum pleading with him to play it. Was it the Blacktown Pipe Band with him? Oddly enough, for some reason I also remember him mentioning Neighbours and Hey Hey It's Saturday!!! Aah...come back Paul, c'mon mate.
