Unfortunately, NBC did not allow us to see Ray's performance at the closing, so here it is, with an intro by Paul/Beatles! I always said Paul and Ray should work together! Two quintessential Englishmen with a talent for writing story-songs, and a love of the old music-halls and ballrooms.

ive never heard mccartney slag davies or almost anyone.however 'davies' has had a few digs at paul i seem to recall. 'ray davies' isnt even in the same league.never has been ,never will be.infact i thought his performance [and hair] was every bit has bad as pauls 2 weeks ago,yet because of his lack of mass appeal it will skip by most peoples radar.

Ray Davies is one of the great songwriters\performers\personalities, I thought his performance was great!!! Unbelievable that it got cut. Thank you for posting. I remember Ray saying some things about Paul is his book but they were more playful jabs than anything (if I can trust my memory), and one of the times I saw Ray in concert (must have been in the 90's) Ray told a great story about playing on the same bill as The Beatles. This would have been around the time of You Really Got Me being a big hit John Lennon was walking toward him and Ray thought he was going to be introduced to Lennon , however John blew him off hahaha.

I don't consider those "slags" at all. Sounds to me as if Ray recognizes Paul's talent, and knows he is capable of more. Many of the same opinions have been expressed here. He also gets that John and Paul brought out the best in each other.

That would have been a great singalong

Of course! But "Waterloo Sunset" was perfect for saluting London.

I think Ray Davies has a good songwriting talent and I like a lot of the Kinks stuff but he's nowhere near Macca but then again not many are anywhere near him. I thought he showed every one of his years at the Olympics closing ceremony.

                          Sir Paul McCartney....Thank You!!

Yeah, but then his years are creeping up to 70 so what do you expect? I think if you're talking about a greatest hits, Davies is up there with the best of them, but I dunno, You Really Got Me aside, none of his stuff had that sexy rock n roll swagger. That's what made it different, it owed something to Noel Coward, who asked to meet Davies after hearing Dedicated Follower of Fashion and recognising a kindrid spirit. I thought The Who did great, but am bemused by some of the other choices. Ironically, Noel Gallagher has a great song out at the moment, and would have worked a treat at the ceremony, rather having Liam come out and do Wonderwall again. I'd have also had Snow Patrol, Coldplay... bands that are current and big and have the modern sound. But yes, I agree, Davies was no better than Macca. I doubt if at the US Olympics they'd get Brian Wilson out to do a number, he's in the same boat; folk who see him will indulge him because he's still alive and they love his stuff, they'll make allowances. It's not for non-fans or faithweather fans.

Ray Davies appeared on BBC Breakfast talking about his appearance. He told how he had a radio mike malfunction when he was already halfway into the arena to perform which he reports he fixed with Gaffer tape. He certainly fixed it in time to perform as his performance is different to that featured on the soundtrack CD. Throughout the live performance he coached the audience when to chip in with a sha-la-la-la ... I presume this is a regular feature of his live act?

As this YouTube includes the "Day In The Life" sequence another factoid is the gymnastic troupe performing that was Spellbound - winners of Britains Got Talent 2010 Martin

Lord, I'd forgotten about his sha la las. Cringeworthy. I mean, once he's sung it, they can't join in, cos the line is over isn't it. But the sound really was dreadful that night. A big miss when it's all about the music and having a big party. On top of which, it did seem like the atheletes were sort of 'kettled' into their prearranged areas within the Union Jack, maybe it's symbolic.

I love Ray Davies, great performance of a great classic. To me he's in the same league as Paul. There were many great artists there, The Who, Ray Davies, Beady Eye, (in some kind) Beatles. I only missed the Stones and maybe Elton John, would be better than the Spice Girls. :

Love the analogy It could've have been a hark back to the G4- or Gwhatever - protests here in the UK. The volunteers charged with that task were wearing blue suits with bowler hats with light bulbs on top - rather like mock police uniforms Martin

Sorry, you've sparked my imagination: Perhaps this is a rehearsal for crowd control measures the next time they have such marches in London. Having kettled the protesters in the manner seen previously I can imagine the police radio commands: Base to mobile unit one, we need back up in Trafalgar Square - take in Ray Davies and Waterloo Sunset asap... Base to mobile unit two: getting really ugly in Parliament Square, we going to have to use the ultimate weapon.... Send in Paul with Hey Jude.... Or perhaps on reflection, the ultimate crowd breaker would be: Base to mobile unit three, totally uncontrollable in the City Of London, send in Cliff Richard and his Greatest Hits compilation, issue ear-plugs and the Lord have mercy on us all..... Just a thought... Martin

Ray comes across as a right git in the latest Q magazine. Always loved his music though, although he is nowhere Macca level.

Paul needs to start a band with Ray Davies, Elvis Costello, Mike Nesmith and Dave Grohl. That would be amazing! Edit: Actually on second thoughts I think Paul and Ray's egos would clash!
