It happened in Monterey! (50th anniversary)
-
Before Bonnaroo... Before Austin City Limits... Before Coachella... Warped Tour... Lollapalooza... Live Aid... Day On The Green... Glastonbury... Altamont... Woodstock... Hyde Park... Isle of Wight... Summerfest... ... there was Three Days of Understanding. Today marks the 50th anniversary of the start of Monterey Pop: The three-day festival of music that is considered by many to be the first major pop/rock cultural event and helped usher in the 'Summer of Love' of 1967. If there's one concert/festival (that didn't include any Beatles
) I wish I could go back in time and attend, it would be Monterey Pop (with Woodstock being a very close second). Eric Burdon & The Animals tribute song, Monterey".

Yes, thank you unclesox for posting this thread! In my opinion, The Monterey International Pop Festival is still considered the festivals of all festivals! I own the 3-DVD Boxset of The Complete Monterey Pop Festival! It also includes a 61 page book with photographs. Great collection! Another is the very first Rhino Edition of the Monterey International Pop Festival. This is a 4-CD set which includes a 95 page book with excellent photographs! Does anyone else own the two collections I mentioned? This legendary festival gave the world Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and The Who just to name a few! Rock n' Roll royalty, the reigning Rock Gods which includes The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Stones, did not perform at the festival. Then again, little did everyone know that new Rock n' Roll Gods were about to be born!

The videos that followed are excellent!!! This girl said it all... "I think it's gonna be like Easter, Christmas, New Years and your Birthday all put together!"

Didn't Macca help plan this event? I've seen snippets of Joni Mitchell's gig there, and enjoyed it. Crosby Stills and Nash got on stage with her and provided back up vocals, unless I'm mistaken. Saw pix of Brian Jones, there

Yes, Paul was one of the Board of Directors.
Indeed. He was also the one who recommended they book Jimi Hendrix. The rest is history!

Brian Wilson was also one of the Board of Directors! I'm really glad that The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys elected not to perform at the Monterey Pop Festival, It would have been extremely difficult to blow Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and The Who just to name a few, off the stage!
