Lurid and over the top at times, but unexpectedly liked Tom Cruise's singing and wished he had more screen time, staggering around in a stoned daze as hard rock heart throb Stacee Jax indulging in various rock n' roll excesses. Wanted cutie Diego Benato to sing "Oh Sherry" to Julianne Hough's character Sherry but he didn't, he did parts of other Journey hits, though. Hilarious the mayor of L.A. looked like Mitt Romney, super straight in public but secretly depraved (Mitt's probably just as stiff and dried up in private, though). Found some of the flick a bit stimulating and exciting. Sort of. Now want to see Katy Perry's musical documentary "Part of Me" for dramatic contrast to "Rock of Ages." I must confess I joined the avid female stampede to ogle "Magic Mike" starring spectacular Channing Tatum--at least it featured music too and the male strippers got a lot of exercise, and came across in some numbers as performance artists, kind of artsy in a way. "Magic Mike" even more exciting, when it was, than "Rock of Ages" when it was. Might want to see that again! (laughs) Lotta cussin' though, seems they cuss as much in Tampa, Florida as in L.A., New York or Boston, or Liddypool (?) so must shake a disapproving finger, I'm afraid Still an interesting sociological look at the male stripper nightclub subculture. Learned a few things

I'm afraid to ask what "twaddle" is, but it sounds like an effective and appropriate metaphor.

Well it's not exactly the correct place to use the word 'twaddle', but you're right, it seemed appropriate! http://www.thefreedictionary.com/twaddle

I'm sure that this movie's Glee-i-zation of those rock lyrics turned those rock-hits into a steaming pile of "twaddle."

Think of every concert by Cher, Bette Midler and Lady Gaga. OK? Now...Those are less gay than Glee.

"Rock of Ages" is from a Broadway musical of the same name, actually. These movies are just lightweight fun summer diversions to get out of the heat and get distracted from problems for awhile, so I wouldn't load them with such scathing scorn myself, at least they feature music and dancing

The main leads were way too "virginial" for the world they were in. Too perfect....too "Osmond".. I could tell it would be a misunderstanding that would drive them apart. I liked the love scene between Brand and Baldwin.

If you're looking for something good to watch you would be better watching the 1973 movie That'll Be The Day and its 1974 sequel Stardust starring David Essex, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon etc.

Thought it was pretty entertaining. Not a classic film by any stretch, but it was a good one. Does not seem to be a hit though. The female lead was fantastic!

Yeah the love scene between Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand was hilarious, Bertone Beatle (the motley pair sang "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" by Foreigner or whoever it was)--I 'm sure the Broadway extravaganza rocked lots more than the movie version, Jenny. Wish I could have seen it. Would love to see the Broadway musical version of "One." For some odd reason Broadway's been showing various Jesus musicals--"Jesus Christ Superstar" and also the musical featuring the innocent touching "Day by Day" and another can't recall its title which were all showcased on the recent "Tony" awards show. Sophisticated New Yorkers need Jesus? (Being facetious and possibly offensive, sorry.) Eek, must confess I saw Katy Perry's movie "Part of Me." Felt a bit embarrassed sitting there watching. Wish there'd been more music numbers of her stage show, of her infectious upbeat catchy hits. Perry comes across as a nice girl and not nearly as conceited as I'd be in her position. She is shown crying over the ugly Russell Brand. Regarded those scenes as a bit inexplicable. They seemed an odd couple, "Beauty and the Beast" and all that : Perry wrote over 100 songs! Showed her singing "Hey Jude" at this year's Musicares ceremonyhonoring Paul McCartney. She didn't sound half-bad singing that. A man in her concert team said there's something different about "stars," the way they look, talk, dress, act, etc. and that Katy Perry, he believes, showed that star quality starting out. So I wondered why one big record company rejected her and didn't see she was a star. I watched "Part of Me" partly from a feminist perspective, that a female performer was being celebrated, and I liked that. Also the thing showed Perry can sing quieter, more introspective and sensitive songs, as well as her catchy pop confections. Am still not an avid fan of hers, but the flick was somewhat entertaining for light summer cinematic diversion fare.
