New Sting album - 57th & 9th
-
Sting has been a huge hero of mine for over 20 years and I was delighted when he announced his rock album in many, many years last month. It's called 57th & 9th (after the New York intersection he crossed every day to get to the studio) and is due for release on November 11th. The first single, I Can't Stop Thinking About You, is premiering on KROQ over in the US on August 31st. Not sure when the UK premier of the new single is but presumably we'll hear it soon afterwards. Here's a link to the short promo video that was posted last month. It's only the shortest of snippets, but it sounds terrific!
He is also releasing The Studio Collection, a box set of all of his previous original studio albums on vinyl from 1985's The Dream of the Blue Turtles to 2013's The Last Ship, on September 30th. Lots to look forward to if you're a Sting fan! -
The new single became available on iTunes on Wednesday. It's an absolute belter! Sting at his best. Can't wait to hear the remainder of the album.

And whilst I'm enjoying having this conversation with myself, here is the link to the official audio on YouTube!

It's about time. When was his last original album?

His last original studio album was The Last Ship, which was actually released only three years ago. It existed as both an album and a play that went to Broadway for a short time. But because the music he wrote for that project was largely folk based, the album passed by without gaining a great deal of attention. Personally, I think the music he wrote for The Last Ship was a masterpiece and as good as anything he has ever written, but unfortunately it was never going to coincide with popular taste. The last straight forward pop-rock album he released was Sacred Love, and that was way back in September 2003. Though he was by no means idle in the intervening years - he's been on tour pretty much every year since then.

I thought that was a covers album. I was thinking Sacred Love was the last original album. I guess I have to look up this other one.

Hi Hailey! What are you up to?

Well, I highly recommend it. It does take a bit of getting used to but it really is a very good album. Also well worth checking out The Last Ship Live from the Public Theatre DVD, which was filmed on Sting's birthday in 2013. It is a brilliant show, and a very good demonstration of Sting's versatility.

A couple of performances of new songs from the album from Later with Jools Holland last week... I Can't Stop Thinking About You

I've been a Sting fan since the early days of The Police. So, pleased that he has a new album out and also that it is more rock orientated than recent albums. Look forward to hearing the whole album. Thanks to all who posted some of the new songs. Roxy641

Thanks for the head's up. Youtube comes to the recue yet again.
I can't believe I missed this when it came out. I would have loved to see this on Broadway, especially with Sting acting. -

A new stripped-back acoustic version of I Can't Stop Thinking About You has just been released as a single. Interesting to hear the song in this form. It gives it a whole other complexion which seems to suit it well. I love it! Here's the link to the official audio on YouTube:

Another new song. This is Petrol Head, which I'm told is a ferocious rocker. I have resisted the temptation to listen to it myself as I don't want to spoil the album by hearing too many songs from it prior to release. It's out on Friday so not long to wait now!

I think I'll probably like Paul Simon's new album more than Sting's. Sting's might be pretty good, too, going by what I've read here on this thread.
-
Sting is good, but Paul Simon's been on a roll lately. It's not really fair to compare the two.

Anyone heard the album yet? It entered the UK charts at the dizzy heights of number 15 today. Regardless of all the sales and chart performance nonsense, I think it's a terrific album. For anyone interested, I wrote a short review on my WordPress page here: http://wp.me/p4ZsIb-3a
