Lord, I give up on Rolling Stone! How could they rate John above Paul? Did they never listen to Helter Skelter, Oh! Darling, Long Tall Sally, etc. etc. etc.?
-
This is like saying Manet was better than Monet.
-
where is Billie Holiday? Linda Ronstadt? Whitney Houston? Freddie Mercury? I am sure there are others I am not thinking of...
which is why I don't buy Rolling Stone.
-
They should have put Aretha Franklin at #19.

These sorts of lists are bogus, so aggravating
Bob Dylan in the highest ranks of great singers? Leaving out Laura Nyro, Chris Isaak, George Harrison, Frank Sinatra, Adele, Carly Simon, Barbra Striesand, Kelly Clarkson, Judy Collins, Tom Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Phobe Snow, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Lulu, Sandy Shaw, even Kate Bush (I noticed they included some singers with not all that great but still interesting, distinctive, even unique voices, and chose some for the hip factor), Crystal Gayle, Amy Winehouse, Liza Minelli, Leon Russell, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Josh Groban, Florence Welch, Jimmy Webb, Bryan Ferry, Fergie, Barry White, Peabo Bryson, Johnny Mathis, Shania Twain, Sarah McLaughlin, Emmy Lou Harris, even Jewel, Jennifer Hudson, Evelyn Champagne King has been forgotten, and Miriam Makeba, Paloma Faith, Diana Krall, K. D. Lang, P.J. Harvey and I'm sure you could come up with more. Vince Gill and Larry Gatlin and Lyle Lovett all sound kind of amazing, for example. I love Fred Astaire's singing, and Doris Day's. Eric Clapton sings pretty doggone good. Smooth. I'd have omitted some on this list from the running entirely. 100 Mary J. Blige 99 Steven Tyler 98 Stevie Nicks 97 Joe Cocker 96 B.B. King 95 Patti La Belle 94 Karen Carpenter 93 Annie Lennox 92 Morrissey 91 Levon Helm 90 The Everly Brothers 89 Solomon Burke (who he?) 88 Willie Nelson 87 Don Henley (No!) 86 Art Garfunkel 85 Sam Moore (who he?) 84 Darlene Love 83 Patti Smith (No!!) 82 Tom Waits (I'd say no) 81 John Lee Hooker 80 Frankie Valli 79 Mariah Carey 78 Sly Stone 77 Merle Haggard 76 Steve Perry 75 Iggy Pop 74 James Taylor 73 Dolly Partin 72 John Fogerty 71 Toots Hibbert (who he?) 70 Gregg Allman (yes yes yes!) 69 Ronnie Spector 68 Wilson Pickett (they left off Archie Bell) 67 Jerry Lee Lewis (hell yes) 66 Thom Yorke 65 David Ruffin 64 Axl Rose 63 Dion 62 Lou Reed 61 Roger Daltry 60 Bjork 59 Rod Stewart 58 Christina Aquilera 57 Eric Bourdon 56 Mavis Staples 55 Paul Rogers 54 Luther Vandross 53 Muddy Waters 52 Brian Wilson 51 Gladys Knight 50 Bonnie Raitt 49 Donnie Hathaway (love his voice) 48 Buddy Holly 47 Jim Morrison 46 Patsy Cline (sho nuff hot stuff) 45 Kurt Cobain 44 Bobby "Blue" Bland 43 George Jones 42 Joni Mitchell 41 Chuck Berry 40 Curtis Mayfield 39 Jeff Buckley 38 Elton John 37 Neil Young 36 Bruce Springsteen 35 Dusty Springfield 34 Whitney Houston 33 Steve Winwood 32 Bono 31 Howlin' Wolfe 30 Prince 29 Nina Simone 28 Janis Joplin (seems like Joplin and Whitney would have been way higher) 27 Hank Williams 26 Jackie Wilson 25 Michael Jackson (only 25 ??) 24 Van Morrison 23 David Bowie 22 Etta James 21 Johnny Cash (I thought he sang off key a lot of the time) 20 Smokey Robinson 19 Bob Marley 18 Freddie Mercury (only 18?) 17 Tina Turner 16 Mick Jagger 15 Robert Plant 14 Al Green 13 Roy Orbison (he shoulda been higher up) 12 Little Richard 11 PAUL McCartney 10 James Brown 9 Stevie Wonder 8 Otis Redding 7 Bob Dylan (ha ha) 6 Marvin Gaye 5 JOHN LENNON' 4 Sam Cooke 3 Elvis Presley 2 Ray Charles 1 Aretha Franklin

I bet it really stings Sting that his golden vocal chords weren't selected
Some of the black guy singers on the list all sound like each other but they each sing real good, nonetheless. I love Peabo Bryson's voice, and he was overlooked.

They did it to aggravate you ... I gave up on Rolling Stone since they put one of the Boston terrorists on the cover ... yea, I know it's a long story --- but really, really bad taste (my opinion).
-
OMG, is "Solomon Burke" that guy who sang the lugubrious campy "The Lady in Red" or is it "Lady in Red"
-
Hay Sheryl Crow was on GMA this morning with her perky jaunty lively new song, had a lot of peeps in her band and she sounded real good...what about Pink?--she sings really well...I didn't think Kurt Cobain sang all that well. He did have something. I wish more readers would notice I printed the entire RS "Greatest Singers of All Time" list and share their opinions

Thanks, Nancy
Where's Beyoncé and Rihanna...a lot of people consider them fantastic songbirds.
-
Funny and amusing: Coach K of Duke University Blue Devils and Olympic gold medal-coaching fame revealed today he is "madly in love with Beyoncé," (LOL) and furthermore, "thinks I have a chance" with her. He said he is used to being very confident. Must be. Where's Chris Martin of Coldplay on the list with his (what the N.Y. Times called it) "mope rock" lead singer efforts. His vocals boast at least an interesting sort of unique quality. I wonder if he bothered to be bothered by his omission--probably not. 'Cause these kinds of lists are bogus and subjective anyway, and many think that R.S. mag hasn't been what it used to be for a very long time. When it prints something positive about Paul Mc., and/or the Beatles, though, it skyrockets in my estimation of its continued status and prestige (LOL)!
-
Lee Ann Rimes can sing really well...no Lee Ann...
-
Diana Ross has her legions of fans. I always liked Toni Braxton's vocals I don't recall if Billie Holliday is on that list or not
-
Joan Baez and Sarah Brightman are great when you want to hear soprano voices. They're not on there, either. There are more male singers than female on the list
-
A list of singers without Bill Withers is meaningless. Bill Withers, Lovely Day
