First off, give a listen to When Doves Cry, not only my favourite song of the 80's but one of my favourite songs of all time. Prince- When Doves Cry

Then of course his signature song: Prince- Purple Rain
In my opinion, Prince is one of the most talented musicians of the last 30 years and he is certainly one of my favourite talents that have been around since the late 70's. He is an extremely prolific musician and has released an album almost every year since 1978! Even Macca is a fan! He is often compared to Michael Jackson because they were both most popular around the same time in the 80's and shared a lot of the same audience, although MJ is undeniably more popular, particularly in recent years where Prince has somewhat been forgotten about as the large force in music he was. During 1980-1987 for example MJ at his peak only released two studio albums (Thriller and Bad) whereas Prince released: 1980: Dirty Mind includes songs such as Uptown, Dirty Mind, When You Were Mine and Head. 1981: Controversy includes songs such as Controversy, Let's Work and Head. 1982: 1999 includes songs such as 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious and D.M.S.R. 1984: Purple Rain includes songs such as When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U and Purple Rain. 1985: Around The World includes songs such as Raspberry Beret, Pop Life and Paisley Park. 1986: Parade includes songs such as Kiss, Girls and Boys, Mountains and Anotherloverholenyohead. 1987: Sign 'O' The Times (a double album as well!) includes songs such as Sign 'O' The Times, U Got The Look, If I Was Your Girlfriend, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man and Adore. The albums of which in bold are STONE COLD CLASSICS rated highly by fans AND critics! Even the songs not in bold which are more inconsistent have some classics on them such as Controversy, Raspberry Beret and Pop Life! Purple Rain and Sign 'O' The Times are often called two of the best albums of all time! Also there are B-sides which are up there with his greatest songs such as "Erotic City", "17 Days" and "She's Always In My Hair" which are unbelievably good songs! Even after this period and IMO up until the mid-90's he still released countless classic songs and a few classic albums such as The Love Symbol album in 1992 and The Gold Experience in 1995. After this his music is admittedly nowhere near up to its previous standards but there are still stand out tracks that hold up well such as "Black Sweat" (2006) and "Colonized Mind" (2009). If you get bored of looking through his MASSIVE backcatalog he has 100's upon 100's of unreleased songs of which those that have leaked include many that are arguably better than a lot of officially released tracks! Oh and his live show is brilliant and arguably rivals Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen's concert with many of his shows going up to 3 hours, It's THAT good. Anyway you can say anything about the purple guy in this thread! (Did I mention I like Prince? : )

His time devoted to keeping almost all of his songs off of YouTube.

To say that Prince is a shadow of his former self would be an understatement, but the fact that he made such good music from 1978-1995 IMO with some exceptions afterwards is a reason I give for me to "Cut him some slack" as the new Paul/Nirvana song goes. Musicology and 3121 are quite good recent albums though and his concerts are a must see. He does come of as a bit of an arse admittedly, particularly about the whole YouTube thing. I think he's just in his own little world. Another thing he's busy doing is seemingly never aging as you can see in this picture from 2011!

His musical genius really can't be overstated. These days, he no longer performs in the raunchy style that contributed to his legend, but his musicianship is as good as it ever was. His studio projects, though, lack something. It lacks "grit" and it is no longer daring. They're almost too polished, as if he now wants to be known as a light-jazz artist. Still, there are moments when the old Prince-attitude rears its head. This cracked me up (I don't think he meant any harm):

Nothing to be ashamed of with that album. It's a masterpiece. Many argue that album was Prince finding his way back from the hit-ands-miss Under The Cherry Moon and Around The world In A Day.

If your talking about the film I definitely agree but I love that soundtrack especially Girls and Boys, Mountains, Anotherloverholenyohead, Sometimes It Snows in April, and Kiss. Kiss and Mountains are both in my top 10 favourite Prince songs. How would you rank his best albums? For me it would go: 1. Purple Rain (a tough call between this and SOTT but When Doves Cry, The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue and Purple Rain among others just seal the deal for me.) 2. Sign 'O' The Times (a masterpiece) 3. 1999 4. Parade 5. Dirty Mind I find it harder to rank them after that.

There are strong songs on both albums, for sure. As for the five albums you'd listed, I'd rank them in this order: 1. Dirty Mind 2. Sign O' The Times 3, Sign 'O' The Times 4. Parade (is this the album with Alphabet Street on it?) 5. 1999 I actually think that Controversy and his self-titled debut are musts for his all-time best, top-five albums.

You must really like Sign 'O' The Times to put it on your list twice. I think Adore from Sign O The Times is becoming one close to my favourite track with every listen. I tried to find a YouTube clip but then of course quickly remembered this is Prince we're talking about. : But I did find the original versions of two of my favourite songs from SOTT and 1999 after a bit of looking around. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker - (1987)

Something In The Water(Does Not Compute) - (1982)

Okay i've only just seen this recently but this is great! This is from when Prince was still the artist formerly known as back in 1997 guest starring with The Muppet's! He appears in some funny sketches, sings Starfish and Coffee, She gave her angels and a few others and their are references to his career including the 'assless' pants/trousers from the Gett Off MTV performance and his name at the time being a symbol! Muppets Tonight, Season 2, Episode 1, 1997. Guest starring The Artist Formerly Known As Prince Part One-

The guy has so many great songs that people would probably want to downoad/purchase if they ever heard them. Never Take the Place of Your Man is one of the best songs ever... and most would/will never know. The video was actually my ammunition for those who would knock Prince. (I've actually convinced a few)

Prince is a genius if for nothing else than Purple Rain alone. One of the greatest albums of the 80's and a rock classic. His guitar work is also some of the best of the last 30 years. It's inevitable that people will always compare an artists work with the first few albums that put them on the map. His early work may be better liked and remembered, but that is the same for anyone...whether it's Dylan, McCartney, Waters, Springsteen, Stones...all those guys that are still doing it. I admire that Prince is still making new albums, still touring, and still a vibrant musical force.

Man, you are SOOOO right! And it's so counter productive, I just don't get it. The guy has so many great songs that people would probably want to downoad/purchase if they ever heard them. Never Take the Place of Your Man is one of the best songs ever... and most would/will never know. The video was actually my ammunition for those who would knock Prince. (I've actually convinced a few)

I remember that track very well! It was a pretty big hit, and MTV played it quite a bit. Love Rosie Gaines!
