Not sure, he had one in 1969 and in the 80s etc, just not his best decade! The Who have NEVER had a UK number 1 single in any decade!
Yeah, it's a shame that a legend like The Who never had a number 1 single, the same goes with Bob Dylan. I don't like Bowie at all, he does nothing for me, neither the songs or the voice or anything. I only like the cover-version of "Heroes" by Oasis. And the "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)" -cover by the Doors (even if it's not a Bowie-original).
It just goes to show you a song doesn't have to be number 1 to be a classic. After all, there are many number one hit wonders we can't even remember, but The Who has a whole string of songs which are all Classic and Iconic by any definition. Bowie too!

David Bowie's new album (The Next Day) seems to be getting rave reviews. If the entire album is anything like the gorgeous single "Where Are We Now," it's gonna be great. He sounds terrific and pulled this off without anyone knowing he was in the studio doing anything. He's raised the bar, Paul. You and you're next album will be measured against Bowie and his. No doubt.

I've finally gotten around to buying The Next Day (tired of waiting for Paul :lol
and, I have to say, I totally love it!! It's shot straight to #1 in the UK - his first chart-topper in 20 years! I predict it will be either #1 or 2 here in the states, which would be his highest chart position ever in the US (beating Station-to-Station's #3 showing)... If that doesn't encourage him to go on tour, I don't know what will! Its amazing that he's able to accomplish all this at 66... It proves older musicians can still be relevant in today's youth-oriented music culture. Hopefully the competition encourages Paul to release something even better. If Bowie can go #1 at 66, Paul can almost definitely go #1 at 70!! In the end, people love the artistic abstractness behind his (DB) albums, which is why I think it will be nominated for a top Grammy. -
Picked it up, and it is a very good piece of work. Will Paul match it? I don't know.

Also his staying out of the limelight and not being seen performing all the time at this and that event and on tour helped immeasurably too. This doesn't take away from his work...but Paul, with the same product, would likely have been "just Paul with yet another" album. Paul's will have to be much more innovative to garner what Bowie did just for finally recording an album of new music. IMO.

Totally agree! I also love "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)," "Love is Lost," and "Boss of Me"... Each so fresh, edgy, and incredibly catchy.

What amazes me is that, unlike Paul's vocal changes, his voice sounds the same. A classic Bowie album alright! Now I wish I had bought the Deluxe version. Cover's a bit of a letdown though. Guess he figures most of the sales these days are downloads anyway.

You make an interesting point about his voice, it does sound remarkably the same...
About the album cover: initially I hated it and was very underwhelmed. I thought it was too basic and uncreative to be a Bowie cover but, like most of his stuff, its grown on me. 
Its so basic and can be applied to any image, making it perfect for social media marketing (as we have seen in their promotion of it). Keeping the cover understated while the album is everything but is an interesting contrast that ads another level of intrigue to the album. In retrospect, the only thing I would have done different is pick an image that was originally released in color (i.e. Hunky Dory or Aladdin Sane), then fade it to black and white to make the difference more defined, then add the The Next Day white tile. If I'm right, the whole concept was to "block-out the past", I think this might have done it a bit better but, again, its grown on me and I'm fine with it as is... Still a fantastic album! -

Today is the 40th anniversary of when David Bowie dramatically retired his famous Ziggy Stardust character/alter-ego after the last concert of his world tour at the time. Today I saw the new Louis Vuitton commercial "Masquerade Ball for L'Invitation au Voyage - Venice." Featuring David Bowie's song, I'd Rather Be High. I love this song and commercial. I don't own anything LV, but I'd buy something if it came with David Bowie.

I think bowie is the most talented musician whos ever lived. In the 70s he made 10 classic albums on the bounce, of different genres.( even the beatles didn't do that ) He has inspired many people to form a band, in the NME once they asked the current stars of the day ( 2000 I think) who was their biggest inspiration......bowie won. I love all his lps, with the possible exceptions of lets dance, tonight and never bring me down ( he said he realised he was playing to a " phil Collins audience around this time) His last lp, the last day is superb, still in good voice and coming up with new sounds. My fav lp is either ziggy or hunky dory and my fav song lady grinning soul. This is by far the worst hes appeared on

I recently read parts of a Bowie bio, he really worked his butt off in his early days trying to succeed in music--almost exhausting to read what all he did, his difficult copious efforts

For me, Bowie's quality never waned. My favourite album is probably Heathen, and I think his 90s and 00s albums are equal in every way to his 70s stuff. In fact, he seems to have just got better over the years. Even albums that have been criticised are now being re-evalued - such as Never Let Me Down, which is, frankly, an 80s masterpiece. When Bowie announced his new album I was worried - what would it be like? Has he lost his touch? But the album was wonderful and I shouldn't have doubted him for a minute.
