Joni Mitchell doesn't want Taylor Swift to play her in the movie "Girls Like Us," says "the only thing that girl has is cheekbones." Ouch.

Katy Perry's manager got in on the Taylor bashing, claimed her "1989" album is "Katy Perry Lite," implying Swift ripped off Perry songs, re-worked them, copied some of them but not so obviously as to get sued. Do you agree?

I am inclined to think of Joni as an Ancient Sage...and Taylor as being more of a cute and sweet bubble gummer.

Time magazine had recent cover story on Swift, called her the "last" or was it "only" pop star, she's out-sold everybody else since she came on the scene, proved most popular, something like that

Well her upcoming tour she is playing mainly stadiums, and they are mostly sold out. The last woman to do that was Madonna. That should say something about her stature. So while I respect Joni Mitchell as a true artist, her opinion about Taylor Swift means little to her millions of fans. It's like somebody criticizing The Beatles in 1964-65.

James Taylor and Carly Simon disagree.

She's a genuine prodigy who made her first album at 15. She's proven herself to be talented and successful at anything she does. People are jealous of people like her. But millions of girls and young women look up to her. Which is OK, because she also seems to be a genuinely good person.

Joni is rock/folk/pop royalty. She ruled over that whole California scene which included CSN&Y, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, etc., and her shadow loomed over Woodstock, even though she didn't attend in order to keep a television interview commitment, I believe. As a songwriter she stands on par with the best of them. She is a seminal figure in the whole confessional, troubadour genre of music. Even as she moved beyond the acoustic guitar, her influence continued. George Harrison, for instance, was influenced by the jazz and brass players who accompanied her, as well as her open-chord guitar playing which defied imitation. Queen Joni. Unfortunately, my musical preferences have calcified a bit with age, and I really don't know Taylor Swift. But I can't really tell her apart from all the other very pretty, polished, and packaged singers of today. I don't blame Joni for her comments at all.

I never liked Swift's weak, whiney vocals and could not understand how anyone could. Her singing is a little bit stronger on "1989" (a teeny bit), but having heard more of the songs she really does seem " inspired" by Katy Perry's style of pop songs (along with some hip hop rap Lite). Perry's manager insinuated Taylor kind of ripped off Katy songs but implied her stuff isn't as good as Katy's when he called it "Katy Perry Lite." Katy must have directed her manager to say that (?). I find parts of "1989" songs a bit nauseating. Others sound somewhat catchy. Their lyrics and (also melodies, for the most part) don't hold a candle to Joni's. Neither Perry's or Swift's. I like part of "Dark Horse." It's a bit difficult to imagine Swift singing something as dark and heavy as "Dark Horse" or "Unconditionally." Have always thought Swift should sell her better more catchy songs to singers who can really sing well. She obviously wanted all the glory for herself. I didn't enjoy her duet with Carly on Youre So Vain--or the way they pranced around, although Taylor managed to strike a couple of cute poses. A few. Carly looked like she needs to scarf down a cheeseburger. Interesting outfit she sports in this vid. James Taylor sounds real good on "Fire and Rain" but then Taylor comes in and ruins it with her shrill warbles. James Taylor had best watch his back-- Carly Simon is penning her memoirs. I shudder recalling how she tore into her own mother, rather a hatchet job, in a "Vanity Fair" article many years ago. She really told on her own mother for various transgressions. One wonders if J.T. will suffer similar treatment.

I do love Taylor for her hard work and accomplishments and charitableness. Perhaps, as she grows older and wiser, she will become more deep and broad and universal in some of her writings.

One also hopes her singing voice "deepens" a bit, as well. Intellectually speaking, regarding her song lyrics, perhaps she needs to read a lot more, and read challenging meaningful fare, and perhaps go to university.

Do you have to dislike someone just because someone you like said something bad about them?

I disliked Swift's singing voice and some of her song lyrics long before Mitchell's catty remark. BTW, Katy Perry will provide half-time entertainment for the Super Bowl this year. They didn't ask Taylor (maybe next year?). They must have wanted more meaty, deeper singing and a more sexy, voluptuous body? I don't know...Perry will knock herself out to give a great show, I hear Taylor does too, tries real hard...I did hear a snippet of Taylor's song "Red" on the radio, while ago, and it sounded intriguing, pretty good--perhaps I'd like the whole thing.
