The last track on the album is called 'Roll On, John'. He's already done a track by that name but this one's meant to be a tribute to Lennon. 1. "Duquesne Whistle" 2. "Soon After Midnight" 3. "Narrow Way" 4. "Long and Wasted Years" 5. "Pay in Blood" 6. "Scarlet Town" 7. "Early Roman Kings" 8. "Tin Angel" 9. "Tempest" 10. "Roll on John"

I have heard the album and it is absolutely stunning. I'm biased because Dylan is my all-time favourite but the album has been getting almost universally ecstatic reviews and the hype is justified. Anyone who thinks Bob can't sing anymore prepare to be shocked because his voice sounds incredibly good on the album-very rough and growly when the song requires it but otherwise smooth and melodic. Roll On John is one of several masterpieces on the album. A gorgeous, loping, soulful melody with a stunning vocal from Bob. Lyrics are just beautiful-he quotes lines from a few Beatles songs, lots of references to John's life and career. Lyrics are as follows (credit goes to Bob fans on the ER forum for transcribing them, some of the lines might not be quite right.) Doctor, doctor tell me the time of day Another bar is empty, another penny spent He turned around and he slowly walked away They shot him in the back and down he went Shine your light Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John From the Liverpool docks to the red-light Hamburg streets Down in the quarry with the quarrymen Playing to the big crowds, playing to the cheap seats Another day in the life on your way to your journeys end Shine your light, Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John Sailin' through the trade winds bound for the South Rags on your back just like any other slave They tied your hands and they clamped your mouth Wasn't no way out of that deep dark cave Shine your light Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John I hear the news today, oh boy They hauled your ship up on the shore Now the city gone dark, there is no more joy They tore the heart right out and cut him to the core Shine your light Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John Put on your bags and get 'em packed Leave right now, you won't be far from wrong The sooner you go the quicker you'll be back You've been cooped on an island far too long Shine your light Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John Slow down you're moving way too fast Come together right now over me Your bones are weary, you're about to breathe your last Lord, you know how hard it can be Shine your light Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John Roll on, John, roll through the rain and snow Take the right-hand road and go where the buffalo roam They'll trap you in an ambush before you know Too late now to sail back home Shine your light Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John Tyger, tyger burning bright I pray the Lord my soul to keep In the forests of the night Cover him over and let him sleep Shine your light Movin' on You burned so bright Roll on, John

Thanks for posting. Dylan never fails to amaze me. Brilliant.

I'm looking forward to hear this album. Have only heard "Early Roman Kings", which I'm not so keen on, and "Duquesne Whistle" yet. The later one is brilliant, so catchy. And touching lyrics about John in "Roll On, John".
-
I've heard the first half of the album. It's all been pretty good so far. I'm going to try and listen to the last half later.

So what are your opinions on the album? I think it's brilliant and indeed the best album of Bob for a decade. Favorite songs of mine are "Duquesne Whistle", "Soon After Midnight", " "Pay in Blood" and "Roll On, John".

I feel the same way. Wonder where this will rank at the end of the year for the top albums of 2012.

I wonder where this album will rank in the catalog of Bob's career, by fans and by critics. Not now, but in 10 years or after his death. It's not in his top 10 best albums (for me), but still in the Top 15.

This album is great, and it really makes me wish Paul would get cracking on a new album already! Yes I know he's working on it but I can't honestly wait much longer, I need a new McCartney album fix!
-
did you see the cover story on Bob Dylan in the new Rolling Stone mag, I glanced through it and noticed Dylan visited John Lennon's home in Liverpool and spoke about Strawberry Fields being "in the back" of John's house and how he hadn't realized that before. And he said when John sang "it's nothing to get hung about" he meant that literally, as hanging was a common form of executions in England at the time. Dylan talked about missing John. And he's got a song about Lennon on his new CD. Dylan spoke enthusiastically about writing new songs, hope Paul takes his lead

I want to get Dylan's new one

Get it, it's brilliant.

Thanks for the tip I'd sure love to chat with Dylan. He comes out with some highly idiosyncratic, original, quirky quotes and observations. He remains fascinating and a most viable, productive artist, proving age is just a number Reminds me of Macca, those particular sparkling qualities
-
I do class Dylan in the same league as McCartney, though Macca was better at music, Dylan was better with words.

Agree, even if you can find good examples for both on the other hand (great Dylan-tunes, great Macca-lyrics). Definitely in the same league.
