I can't seem to find a thread about Billy Joel, so I thought I'd start one! Post videos and discuss the Piano Man himself to your hearts content! Heres a performance of one of my favourite songs ever: New York State of Mind with Tony Bennett (Last Play at Shea)

      F*ckin MIND BLOWING performance!

I got into Billy Joel back during his Stranger/52nd Street days...and I liked his stuff through Nylon Curtain...he kind of lost me a little bit after that...but during that earlier phase, he used to run neck and neck with Paul as my favorite artist - glad the two of them have had a chance to perform together on several occasions over the years (the first I recall was during Paul's induction into the HOF)...I absolutely love Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.

I know it's a cliched choice but I love She's Always a Woman, incredible song!

"Uptown Girl" and "Second Wind" popped into my head, the latter is intended to help prevent teen suicide and is catchy and upbeat, not lugubrious despite its profound subject matter while "Uptown Girl" I find irresistably catchy and infectious. Makes me wish Billy Joel was still with Christie Brinkley I adore his being so obviously ultra influenced by Paul's songs... Joel's repetoire is one huge homage to McCartney music in my opinion. I don't like some of Joel's but those I like, I really appreciate a lot. "New York State of Mind" is beautiful. Almost makes me wish I'd never left New York. Fancy that gospel-tinged one about the river. It's quite catchy.

'shes always a woman'..is possibly my favourite non mccartney or finn song ever. just an amazing melody with beautiful vocal. 'just the way you are' was described by mccartney himself as THE song he wish hed written himself. so mr joel needs little praise after that.....hes better that phil collins but is still a bit phill collins-ish for my liking. also the double piano thing with 'elton john' makes me wanna throw up. still one of the great american singer songwriters and not as overated as bruce friggin springsteen.

A bit like Paul, Billy has never been a critics favourite, but he's one of America's greatest singer songwriters. Also like Macca you have to delve into his catalogue and go beyond the "hits" to find truly memorable songs. Miami 2017 ( I've Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)

America's Elton John...and it's funny that their careers almost seemed parallel in that there was a wall they hit in the 80's where they lost their relevence in my opinion of course...but what they did before that time is still timeless and great enough to still consider them one of my favorites, despite have that point in their career where I lost interest.

Although there was more than a few good songs on his massive "An Innocent Man" (83) the album didn't appeal to me that much!! Storm Front (89) was a bit of a biggy for BJ too but apart from the excellent "We Didn't Start The Fire" and a couple of other tracks- on a whole the album was poor!! I won't to go into EJ's career as i've already mentioned my thoughts on him on another thread, you summed up EJ & BJ perfectly rich-n

America's McCartney. Elton's awesome, but he's a one-trick pony. Billy Joel can rock out on guitar just like Paul, and he can get push the musical envelope just like Paul. Overall, Paul is superior. I'm surprised that Billy Joel's output waned in the recent past; the '90s looked very promising for him. River Of Dreams was a monster hit album in '93.

Definitely one of the all time greats. I would agree with Audi in calling him America's McCartney. This song is beautifully painful, gorgeous melody:

                                          Sir Paul McCartney....Thank You!!

LOVE Billy Joel...definitely more than Elton JOhn, but he is not far behind at all. I've seen Billy twice, but never on his own...with Elton in '09, he blew EJ off the stage of course...and at Yankee Stadium with Paul last summer!
