This is the easiest one for me, of all instruments. Hendrix. he just manhandled improvised rocking. and wrote great guitar melodies. stuff as hooky as any guitar riff/melodies, and also a cooler rock sound than almost anything. so amazing was Hendrix. honorable mentions go to a whole bunch of others.. Clapton, Page, Garcia, Trey Anastasio's a badass...
have to say Van Halen, Santana. or Dave Navarro or Billy Corgan of more recent vintage. Keith Richards is just awesome. sort of like a George Harrison, or Pete Townsend. but I say Hendrix
