Birdy
-
any Birdy fans out there? I've been really impressed by this young artists debut album which came out late last year. Although nearly all the songs are covers, she does play the piano and writes her own material. Birdy had a hit single in the UK last year with Skinny Love.....hopefully that won't be a one-off and that she's got a long future in front of her. Very hard to pick a track off her eponymous titled album as they're all rather excellent but I've chosen this one as it has a nice video to accompany it. Shelter:

So thats a 'no' then?
Here's an interview and performance conducted at her home last November. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-15691767 Birdy also has a new song, Just A Game, included on the soundtrack for the new Hunger Games film

She's a very young artist so its not surprising that she isn't particularly well known yet although she's has already had a top 20 single and album here in the UK. There's a YouTube link for her second single, Shelter, at the end of my original post. Here's a link to perhaps her most successful cover version to date, Skinny Love:

Quite a nice voice. She's got a set of pipes! Does she do any original songs?

Although Birdy's been writing songs since she was an eight year old (!!) only one appeared on her debut album, entitled Without A Word. Because she was studying for her exams, it was felt it was less time consuming if they mainly went for an album of cover versions. This allowed for her performance style to be introduced without a lot of time being spent consolidating an albums worth of new material. There is an excellent 'live in studio' version of Without A Word on YouTube but I've opted for the studio version here:

Had a great time last night at Notting Hill's the Tabernacle for Birdy's debut concert. That girl can really sing.

Birdy's got a lot of talent--soulful, sensitive, can wail and convey deep feeling and sound well-modulated and controlled as well, can bring out a pretty soprano sound, too-- especially enjoyed "Shelter"--thanks for a new music revelation that's worthwhile to hear and discover

Thanks Susy, glad you've enjoye dwhat you've heard so far. I'm really looking forward to her second album, which will all be self-written songs. I guess that will be crunch time as to whether she has a long term successful future or whether her first single and album were just flashes in the pan?

Wow. I'm going to have to check out her album. Really beautiful.

Make sure you go for the 'special edition' version, which features three excellent bonus tracks,Comforting Sounds, Farewell And Goodbye and an alternative version of People Help The People. The easist way of telling the two versions apart is that on the standard album she's wearing a red cardigan over her white dress whilst on the special edition she's removed the cardigan. Here's a live-in-studio performance of my favourite track off the album: I'll Never Forget You:
