Different days I know, but the final encore for the Wings Over America tour was a new song. On the 1979 UK tour he played Coming Up which wasn't released till the following year (and went to number 1 in the US). Oh for the bravery of those days!
I think it's fairly smart to wait until release to play songs at shows - not counting promo shows like iHeart Radio Festival, Jimmy Whoeveritisthistime etc. If you're at a gig and he plays a new song, you might turn to your mate on the way out and say 'Man, that new song was actually really great. I'm going to grab the album.' and then you can get it from the merch stand. If it's not out yet you might forget by then or go off the idea. Play to the impulse buying market.
I haven't seen a new studio album at a macca show since 2009 when he had Memory Almost Full & Electric Arguments on sale...AND even gave Brian Ray and Rusty Anderson space for their albums! Since then, I've only seen Good Evening New York City pop-up in various forms occasionally.
Not very smart move by his "team".

I just love Paul's song "New" and wish it were longer. I repeat it a bunch of times in a row to get my fix and fill and never seem to tire of it. Perhaps he did refer to his song "New" in that quote, LOL. But it's not a black hole and should have been a big hit.
