The Everlys released "EB 84" in 1984 to more acclaim and scored a hit with the album's "On the Wings of a Nightingale," written for them by Paul McCartney.

I'm gonna play "EB '84" and cry my eyes out tonight. Goodbye, Phil. We miss you already.

Was very sad to hear of the passing of Phil Everly today; a sad loss to popular music. I wrote a little piece on him on my daily blog, should anyone be interested; both Macca and The Beatles get a fair few mentions: http://mostlydavidephgrave.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/foreverly.html

Making of On The Wings Of A Nightingale and Music videoI would die a happy man if McCartney ever played this live or recorded a official version of the song himself.

You know, I actually don't need Paul to do this song. It was (and is and always will be) a perfect Everly Brothers song. It's always been one of my favorite records. So sad to lose Phil.

Really sad to hear the news about Phil Everly, their music influenced so many people.

RIP Phil Everly!

I agree it was perfectly written by McCartney for the Everly Brothers. I just think it was one of the best "pop" tunes McCartney has written and think he would do a wonderful job on it himself.

I had the vinyl album "EB '84" with "Wings of a Nightingale" and a red-headed soldier guy I dated briefly stole it from me, along with a Steely Dan double album I need to replace these. Could someone explain if Buddy Holly influenced the Everly Brothers or was it vice-versa--which group came first? Thanks. Maybe they were right around the same time. Got a feeling Buddy Holly came first, though. Wonder if Macca esteems both these equally, or holds Buddy Holly in somewhat higher regard. Buddy wrote all or most of his own songs, right? Did the Everly Brothers?

So sad to hear about the death of Phil Everly. Before I fell in love with the Beatles, I got hooked on the Everly Brothers through my Mom. I was only about 8 or 9 and I remember Mom playing the Everlys' on our record player...All I Have to Do is Dream, Wake Up Little Susie, Bye-Bye Love etc. We used to sing these songs in the car. When I first got into the Beatles, it was obvious to me that Paul and John patterned their hamonies (especially on many of their earlier songs) after Don and Phil. In this morning's USA today their is an appreciation article about the Everly Brothers and Phil's passing. In this article, Brian Mansfield (music critic) lists some of their greatest songs. Paul's song (On the Wings of a Nightingale) that he gave to the brothers on their comback album (1984) is on the list. This is another song that I wish Paul would release on a future Compilation CD. Paul's acoustic version is on U-tube and I think it is terric. If someone could put this version (and the Everlys') on this Site, it would be appreciated.

The ABC News with Diane Sawyer made a point about how they had influenced the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel, in particular, and then played bits of Everly Brothers songs and some the Beatles and S& G had recorded. I believe they showed some similarity of "Kathy's Clown" and "Love Me Do". There was a certain bit of structural similarities and word pronunciation/emphasis.....in any case, the Beatles and so many other groups were immensely influenced by the Everly Brothers. Even the way Paul and George leaned into the same mic was how the Everly Brothers did. Paul would be the first to admit the Brothers' influence. And that's not a bad thing. for sure.

I know it's a little late buy RIP. Definitely an influence on the Beatles for sure.

No, they did not....They did each write one or two or three of their big hits, however, but others wrote most of their songs...per an article I read in USA Today. Just looked at my "All Time Original Hits" CD by the Brothers, and it indicates that Don wrote "('Til) I kissed You", "Kathy's Clown" and "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad). "So Sad....") is my very favorite song of theirs!!! That and the heavenly "Let It Be Me". Phil wrote "When Will I Be Loved.". Not too shabby. (I love George's version of "Let It Be Me"...which he recorded at home right after seeing the Brothers in London in '84. His version is on the documentary soundtrack about him. Beautiful.)

One thing I love about how the Beatles showed their love and respect for the Everly Brothers was that they didn't cover one of the Brothers' big hits, but did a deep album track instead ...."So How Come (No One Loves Me) on the BBC album.
