Paul's Best Cover Songs

When it comes to midnight special, I prefer the Unplugged version that was left off the Unplugged album, but showed up later as a b side on one of the Off The Ground singles (I think Biker Like an Icon...will check my copy just to verify and edit this post if I'm wrong) I also have a soft spot for the Kampuchea version of Lucille

Coquette - Paul McCartney
Fats Domino - Coquette (195 I think Paul took it a notch or two (maybe more) -
My two favourites are "Besame Mucho" and "Like Dreamers Do" I think both from 61 or 62, great vocals from Paul and suprising no one else mentioned these already

________________________________________________________________ I think that "Like Dreamers Do" is a Paul written song. Can someone confirm. Also someone else mentioned "I'm Down". If I'm not mistaken, that is also a Macca song under "Lennon-McCartney". Can someone also confirm this as well. Agreed that Macca's vocals are outstanding on both songs. PS I always love the video of paul doing "I'm Down" at Shea Stadium. While Paul is doing a killer vocal, you see John and George laughing like hell while John is playing the piano. I think Paul also did I'm Down on the Ed Sullivan show right after he did Yesterday.

Yes, "Like Dreamers Do" was a Lennon-McCatney Original. I think the post about "I'm Down" was tongue-in-cheek, since it was so obviously a Little Richard homage. (I do love that song, and the Shea version is a lot of fun!)

Someone requested the video of Paul doing Lonesome Town at the Concert for Linda. Here you go (also with All My Loving):

And I loved Paul's cover of John's I'm So Tired.... does that count?

I don't think so!

I'm Down and Long Tall Sally... Fine examples of Paul's rock vocals... I adore Besame Mucho from Anthology 1.

Paul wrote I'm Down! (credited to Lennon & McCartney of course) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_Down

What about the Buddy Holly cover album he made with Denny Laine, "Holly Days"? McCartney plays many instruments and produced the album. Laine on lead vocals. It was perhaps more of a hobby project and I've never played it much but it is entertaining in its own way. McCartney for completists.

Movie Magg
Lawdy Miss Clawdy -
By far and away, Paul McCartney's version of Mary Hopkin's 'Goodbye'. His song of course, but beauty and perfection personified. Perhaps, dare I say, his greatest song, vocal and performance.

I think I have to say "No Other Baby". Maybe it includes the song along with the experience of the video. He sits in a boat and rowing... So simple yet song + video at its best.

Oh man, I didn't know there was a video to this song. Just checked it out, very cool. Agreed! I totally love this version, great cover! One of my faves from this period.

You know, I do think I need to put in a word for some of the songs on "Kisses on the Bottom." In particular, Paul's take on "Bye Bye Blackbird" captures a melancholy side to the song that typically gets missed. Just by way of contrast, check out: Liza Minelli, from her hugely successful "Liza With a Z" TV concert:
And Paul -- He transforms this song almost as thoroughly as he does "No Other Baby." -
I enjoy "Kisses on the Bottom". The only gripe I have on that album is that it could use one uptempo song or two or three more. McCartney has said that he made it as a record you can listen to when you come home from work or something and need to relax. You can sit down with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. These are timeless songs, I think, in that respect, the concept is unnecessary. But it is perhaps inspired by Frank Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours" album, as a kind of mood at the moment? Anyway, I've played "Kisses on the Bottom" so much that I can sing along to every song. As is typical McCartney actually. Maybe why I'm here, on his .com.
