The irony being that the lyrics of The Other Me are a cut above Paul's usual fare. Still, I'm off to listen to some Lennon poetry like "I'm going to love her till the cows come home..." Genius.

Side 2 of PoP is much inferior to Side 1, imo. The only 2 good tracks are Sweetest Little Show & Through our Love. I'm of the camp that Average Person is horrible, both lyrically and musically. It seemed Paul was trying to write more "message" songs post 1980, & it's clearly not his strength. Its hit or miss. The misses are a result of trite lyrics or poor metaphors (see Ebony & Irony) & derivative melodies (not helped by the synthesizer!).

I remember playing the original CD way back when I heard the "Average person" it was a landmark for the first time I thought Paul could write bad songs Then a year latter I read somewhere that George Martin had one time rejected to work on some of Paul's songs for being just terrible

This is the same George Martin who is seen looking at his watch as Paul is trying to "sell" him It's Not On in the video on the bonus disc. Frankly, if I had a colleague, or an employee - because Paul would have hired Martin to produce - who behaved like that, I'd have their desk cleared and get security to march them out of the building. Frankly, Martin was just as old fogey who got lucky and got rich by being in the right place at the right time.

I'm also of the camp that George Martin has been a bit overrated in terms of his contribution. John pretty much said so in his 1971 interview. Yes, he opened John & Paul to possibilities musically, but it was John & Paul who actually came up with the new ideas. George was more an implementer. By the time 1968 came around, Paul & John were basically running the production. Plus, I cant stand some of the production on the 1st 2 albums. Songs like Please Please Me & There's a Place sound so dated today because of the bad production.

I love Average Person, and I adore Pipes of Peace. A great sounding album, and Paul's voice is spectacular throughout. Average Person is NOT horrible. It is a little Obla-di-Obla-da, Mrs. Vandebilt, and Maxwell's Silver Hammer, rolled into a very cool little song. This site really ticks me off; if you don't like a certain song just say that; calling music that other people love "horrible" is an insult.

"If you want the Beatles, go see Wings"-George Harrison 1974

"This is for all the Wings fans!" - McCartney introducing "1985" for the first time on American soil (Phoenix 2010)

This is the truth. Sadly, most people try to present their opinion as from "on high" - they think the more high-handed and insulting they can be, the more weight their opinions carry. It's a very infectious disease and the anonymity of the internet wholly encourages it. Personally I don't see how Average Person is any worse than quite a few of the songs on the over-hyped Tug of War - Get It, Dress Me Up As a Robber, What's That You're Doing, even Ballroom Dancing. The only objective standards in music lie in the playing and production - when it comes to songs, music is subjective. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Mmmm...I think even playing and definitely production are also in the realm of subjectivity.

Which is exactly why anyone has the right to refer to music as "trash" if they so believe it to be. Get over yourselves.

Folks, try to remember George Martin doesn't have a fan boy relationship with Paul that many of you have. Fact is, Martin made the Beatles and gave them a break when no one else would. He was their boss in the studio for many years and had no problem telling them when an idea was rubbish, and they listened. As they should have. If Martin wants to look at his watch when Paul talks, he can. He is a friend and contemporary of Paul's, and the Beatles made his career too. Which means Paul can check his watch too!

What I meant was that there's a professional standard for playing an instrument, or even having one; and a professional standard of equipment in a studio for recording. Subjective is the appreciation of the use they're put to. Songs on the other hand... well, I've seen and heard enough amateurs in action to know inspiration can hit anyone.

Wow, "My Little Koala" and "Twice in a Lifetime" are two of the "extras" on this? What are others? These are real gems, real smooth ear candy. I loved the Gene Hackman, Ann Marget, and Ellen Burstyen movie "Twice in a Lifetime" Was this composed for that? I don't recall hearing it in the movie, but saw it so long ago.
