Unplugged 2
-
After so many years of big stadium and arena tours including his current Out There shows, wouldn't it be nice if Paul would change it up and do a new Unplugged Show focusing on his Post Beatles career with a few rarities and unreleased songs included. He could use his current band with maybe some surprise guests. He might have to do 8 or 10 shows and cull the best performances from several shows for a new CD/DVD release. None of the songs should be his massive Beatle/Wings hits he has constanly done in his "big" tours. The small venue/unplugged style would give him a chance to spotlight his many wonderful songs that so many people (all ages) don't know. This would do so much for Paul's legacy if people could hear so many of his great compositions that have been totally neglected. I have listed my "dream" unplugged concert, but Sir Paul has so many great songs that many variations could be chosen. A setlist like the one below would definitely blow me away and I think, with the right promotion, could be a massive seller for Paul. Some of these songs could possibly be new "standards" for Paul. Unplugged 2 by Paul McCartney 1. I'll Be On My Way (I know I said Post Beatle songs but this is a great, great song that could be a fantastic opener and get the crowd going...very early Beatles' song written by Paul but only heard on the BBC live Album; I could hear Paul and Abe doing it in a regae style) 2. World Without Love (the Peter and Gordon song written by Paul) 3. Put It There 4. This One 5. Heaven on a Sunday (maybe James could guest on this one) 6. Little Willow 7. Somedays 8. Ever Present Past 9. Vintage Clothes/That Was Me/ Feet in the Clouds (Medley) 10. Wings on a Nightingale (written by Paul for the Everly Brothers 11. Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People 12. I'm Carrying 13. Don't Let It Bring You Down 14. Hope of Deliverence 15. I Owe it All to You 16. Golden Earth Girl 17. Winedark Open Sea 18. Too Much Rain 19. How Kind of You 20. She's Giving Up Talking 21. Your Way Encore 22. Tell Me What You See (A Beatle song that he's never done but could work well in an unplugged format) 23. O' Darling (Another Beatle song but this could be done in an unplugged, bluesy vocal and guitar style) 24. Light from Your Lighthouse (this would get the crowd going) 25. Sun is Shining 26. Mull of Kintyre (I know he has done this in Canada and Scotland, but this song belongs in an Unplugged Set and would be a perfect closer) What do you think?

I think that'd be great! I don't think he did anything post 1970 on Unplugged, did he? I always wished George had done an Unplugged. He hated touring and the Unplugged format was made for him! He could have roped in his mates, and gone through heaps of his catalogue - and let's face it, George's music lends itself nicely to soft acoustic treatments. But I digress... Another Paul album in the Unplugged format? Yeah, I'd be up for it! A great opportunity to dust off post 1970 songs ONLY, and amongst them, Wings and solo stuff he hasn't ever done on stage. I'M SOLD!!!

I think a lot of fans would have had this thought, me included, but you're the first to put it out there and it's a great idea.
My setlist would be different but that's by the by, the premise is great and it would relieve the boredom of Paul's current format which is to predictable.

Great idea! I would add Goodbye, Distractions and Footprints as well..and maybe Somebody Who Cares..

I would love it! As you say, we'd all have different song preferences, but some of your choices are very intriguing indeed! A couple I would choose: Love In Song Winter Rose/Love Awake Two Magpies
-
I'd like to hear - Friends To Go Two Magpies One Of These Days Somebody Who Cares Single Pigeon Honey Pie One Last Kiss Sally G Deliver Your Children There are literally more than a hundred he could do!
-
oh yeah!

So funny. Several of the songs on the replies were in my mind like Goodbye, Somebody Who Cares, Single Pigeon, One of these Days, Winter Rose etc. All of these are great choices and are from even other albums. And there are many other good choices not yet mentioned. Just goes to prove how many great, relatively unknown songs Sir Paul has. Maybe we would have an Unplugged 2, 3, 4 etc. Maybe he could add a couple of songs from the new album. I can't think of a better thing he could do over the next couple of years to add to his legacy. Hope it happens.

Indeed. As he gets older it would sap his body and voice far less than the 3 hour gigs; and as one-offs would be a tidy way to satisfy the fans appetite for more solo and Wings. Easy.

Fantastic idea.

We need to add in Down to the River & Rainclouds

Where I love the job he did the first time...absolutely perfect!! Too bad they didn't broadcast the whole thing. But I would venture a guess that your setlist...while very fun for fans is was too OUT THERE for Paul to do. But hell, I love where you are going with this. I also think that more than a show or two would be asking too much! But I'm down if he decides to go that route!!

Bob, Yes, it would be great. I realize there would be a lot of factors for deciding a Setlist for a Macca Unplugged Show. I just wrote down "some" of my favorites. I also realize that some songs that many of us would like to hear might just not work for any number of reasons. Afterall, Paul is 71. But I also know that if Paul hired the best possible person/persons to put it together, it would be successful in the long run and a definite plus for his legacy. His great Catalog in my opinion is not just his years with the Beatles. His Post Beatles' output in my opinion is staggering and so underrated. He just needs more avenues to get them exposed and this could be a definite start. I get it that for the big stadium shows, he was kind of forced to do such a heavy Beatles setlist. This would give him an opportunity to showcase his Solo stuff. Paul got his standards album (successful at that) out of the way so now is the time to spotlight his own songs that have been so neglected. Seeing the list of songs in this tread alone shows how many he has and there are plenty more. I was thinking about I Give You a Ring and Yvonne as I was writing this. If this does happen, hopefully no "covers" like the original "Unplugged". God knows Sir Paul has plenty of his own to chose.

And remember Bob, Paul was one of the very first to do this. He went so far to make sure all the intruments were non-electric, and of course the album tanked in comparison to Clapton's etc...after they followed Paul, came along and gradually "electrified" the concept. So annoying.

Paul's unplugged show was really the only true unplugged performance, that's why everybody looks a little stiff playing because they had to avoid straying off mic.

I whole hearted agree that Macca's catalog..both Beatles and Wings & Solo is the most incredible catalog out there. And certainly his Wings and Solo career is very under valued....no doubt about that. But where I will disagree is that for the first Unplugged, I thought the covers were amazing...some of these songs he is still doing in soundcheck today...They were well thought out and not the ones that you'd expect him to do. Love The Fool Hi Heel Sneakers San Francisco Bay Blues Good Rockin tonight Be Bop A Luh Lah And although it didn't sell well, I thought keeping it true to acoustic really captured lightning in a bottle. It's an album I listen to on my car deck a lot

"Tanked" is not at all a fair characterization of Unplugged: The Official Bootleg's sales. It was released limited-edition; only 250,000 cassettes/LPs/CDs were released in 1991. If I recall correctly, it sold-out immediately. But, yes, Clapton's was a gigantic success, thanks to his re-working of "Layla," as well as his already big hit at the time, "Tears In Heaven" from the Rush movie-soundtrack. And you are absolutely right about how the show became more and more "plugged" over time. Pointless. Paul's set is one of the very few, truly unplugged performances of the show's history.
-
There is even a set for the MTV rehearsals out there. Recorded at "The Barn" at Hog Hill, Sussex, UK - January 1991

I watched the show in its first season, but it wasn't until Aerosmith did it that I began to love the show. After they did it, Paul was the second "huge" act to do Unplugged.
