First of all, did we notice that 24 of the 42 songs are from solo and Wings material!! Sweet. And my second favorite rock band, Cheap Trick, doing my second favorite song (Jet) from my favorite rock band (Wings). Holy Batman! Just needed Metallic to do "1985" and I'd be set for life.
They didn't go much past 1980. Too bad.
So bad, you might say.
Would have been a nice touch to have something from the latest album. Still, a good collection of songs and artists, I think.I Used To Be Bad...lol. __________________________________________________________ But seriously...yes a good collection of songs & artists but I would love to hear some of them cover some of his more current music. Where's Dave Grohl...was he on that list?
_____________________________________________________________________________ Favorite Thing, Don't want to dampen your enthusiam and yes there are a number of tracks that i would be interested in hearing...On the Way (BB King) , Wanderlust, So Bad (Smokey Robinson), No More Lonely Nights and Letting Go (Heart). THe Bonus Cuts also have Put it There, Run Devil Run and Smile Away (Alice Cooper) which I would also love to hear. As Oobu24 hinted, this ambitious collecction seems to fall short in covering Macca's complete career. Why aren't there more songs from the last 30 years or so...let's say post No More Lonely nights and So Bad. After the Broad Street album, the only 2 tracks after Broad Street came out are Put It There and Run Devil Run and they are both Bonus tracks where you have to pay a lot more money for the complete package. I'm not talking about adding obscure songs here. If I was going to list Macca's Best 40 Post Beatles songs, i would probably have 15 of them post Broad Street. If there were even 7 or 8 more songs from the last 25 years then I would be much more excited. Maybe if this is successful they could do a volume 2 with only songs from 1980 onward with more younger artists. When you think about the great songs from Flaming Pie, Memory Almost Full, Chaos, Flowers in the Dirt, New etc. that could have been covered (primarily in my opinioin by young artists) it is dissapointing. I'm talking about songs like: Souvenir (by a current Soul/R&B Artist) Little Willow Callico Skies Young Boy Figure of 8 This one Hope of Deliverance Ever Present past House of Wax Alligator Queenie Eye Lonely Road And there are other examples of songs that are hidden gems that belong on a McCartney tribute album. Again, i am glad that this Tribute package is coming out but I just wished it presented a better balance of Paul's entire career. paul is one of the few aging pop-rock artists where is latter year imput is just as good as his 70's songs. I am also surprised that Dave Growl is not on the tracklist. I would like to hear his full version of Maybe I'm Amazed. His partial version at the Washington DC Macca tribute was amazing. As much as I like Billy joel, i'm not sure his chops are as good as Dave on a song like MIA. I also wished that Elvis Constello was one of the artists. It just seems that Elvis can do a good job on any Macca song. i'm thinking of Warm and Beautiful at the Linda Tribute Concert or even Penny Lane at the White House Special. As i said, i still look forward to hearing a good number of cuts on this package. i only hope that some day we will get something like this emphasizing his great songs from after 1985.

I would've preferred this just to be everything post-Beatles. It was close enough to it, so why throw a few Beatles in.... yes, should've been more latter day covers.... I will buy this, but I'll always throw on the original rather than listen to an interpretation. Either way, the best thing about this album is it will put Paul front and centre again. Am looking forward to the Kiss cover of Rock Show. They were spruiking it I reckon 18 months ago, so this album has been a long way in the making.

BJ, now that you mention it, I'm surprised that Elvis Costello isn't on it, but I'm not surprised that Paul's latter years are mostly ignored. Same pattern with "Wingspan" and his live concerts. Back in 2001, there was that pair of McCartney tribute CDs called "Listen To What The Man Said" and "Coming Up". There were plenty of young artists on those (Owsley, Semisonic, Sloan, etc.), and they did lots of surprising covers, including: Somedays Back On My Feet My Brave Face (two different versions) This One Take It Away Getting Closer Warm And Beautiful Love In Song Oh Woman Oh Why Dear Friend Too Many People Ram On Waterfalls (fabulous version by Sloan, one of my all-time favorite McCartney covers) Sadly, they didn't sell too well. This new one, with the power of the star artists and popular McCartney and Beatles hits, has a much better chance. I guess that was their plan, anyway, for this. toris: I am looking forward to the KISS tune, too. It suits their style.

. Well, they can only go so far before it becomes a 100 song collection.
At that point, you'd be pricing out the general public. The press release says that while the producer picked some of the songs, the majority of the songs were picked by the artists themselves. I'm sure nobody would have objected if Brian Wilson wanted to do something from Chaos. I'm just happy that the majority of the songs are post-Beatles. -

Owsley didn't hit it big, but he had some good stuff. Sloan had a song called "Underwhelmed" that was an indie/alternative hit. Semisonic had a big hit with "Closing Time" ("I know who I want to take me home...."), and the lead singer has gone on to write and co-write a lot of hits, including songs by the Dixie Chicks and Adele. Those comps also had somewhat better known artists like Matthew Sweet, the Finn Brothers, They Might Be Giants, and Robyn Hitchcock (all big favorites of mine), but none of them were "new" in 2001.
