"World Without Love" demo discovered

Beatles4Ever&Ever:
So, I just listened to the newly available 30-second snippet of Paul's demo for "World Without Love," a song he wrote and, ultimately, gave to Peter & Gorden to record...and which became a huge hit for them in the UK and the States. I've read that John and George laughed hysterically when Paul sang it for them...to consider for the Beatles. Seems the part about "Please lock me away..." got them going. They refused to consider it...probably meaning Lennon. While I see the humor and their (Lennon's) purported reaction, it's a pity, really. It could have been a great Beatles' track. I mean, it's better than, say, "Do You Want To Know A Secret," which they recorded during that period of time. Much preferable to their cover of the show tune, "Till There Was You." I mean, c'mon!!!
Late 1980, and Playboy interviewed John and Yoko. In addition to the interview proper, they listed a huge amount of songs and asked John for reactions/memories. Even then, he said they wouldn't have WWL, and he specifically mentioned the "please lock me away" line.

That is pretty funny, nice sounding song, Paul could really turn a melody. but thats such 50's pop cliche song too in a way. funny wikipedia says the ROck n Roll Hall of Fame recoginizes that song as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock n roll?! uh, can anyone else say yeah right does have that hit sound to it. John was just too much of a hardass to have lyrics like that. In a way I'm sure in his mind it was ridiculous enough as it was with all the "I love her, she loves him' lyrics they were writing.

What kills me is that the song is credited to Lennon/McCartney!!!! And it went to #1 btw! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_World_Without_Love

the fact it went to #1 both sides of the world, IMO does have something to do with a certain media hype that might have been happening, that this somewhat well hyped band Peter & Gordon and their relationship to Paul/the Beatles were doing a Lennon/McCartney song. cause otherwise seriously, that song a #1? no way IMO. I think hyped played a roll. probably why Paul opted to also release ghostwritten songs under alias', so he could tell if the songs were actually good. Being 'Lennon/McCartney' penned, especially during the peak of Beatlemania, would have given a song an auto-boost in the charts I'd say. although the people at the Hall of Fame obviously love it so they obviously are not all idiots. just surprising to me it makes the top 500 most influential to rock!? Hm.

The only Peter & Gordon song he used a pseudonym on was Woman (by "Bernard Webb") and it only went to #14 in the U.S. :

Loved that one, too, and never knew Paul wrote it.

I have always loved this song and always will, if the Beatles had released the song I think it would have done well too, to me, it 's a very 64 ish type song. I see no difference in some of the other songs they did and this one it's just all a question of one's individual taste. Peter & Gordon did a great job on it and I think it's neat to hear Paul singing it because I always imaginged his voice singing it and sounding the very mellow sound he has with some of his songs. Great find I say
