Driving Rain revisited
-
Driving Rain is one of my top favorite albums by Paul and my favorite song on this album is She's Given Up Talking. It is one of his best albums in my opinion. Hard to believe this album is over 10 years old already? Sheesh I feel like it just came out yesterday on CD and I was still in high school when it came out lol

16 years old!! I wore it out when it was first released. My two toddler sons learned English and even how to count to 5 from this CD!

"Driving Rain" is an okay album. I don't mind it (the way I do, say, "Pipes of Peace"), but neither is it top-tier McCartney and I don't listen to it that much. What I like most about it is that Paul sounds like he's really enjoying making music again, 3 years after Linda's death.

____________________________________________ TommyC I had seen this list before but it is nice to have them written. While ranking Paul albums/CD's is very subjective and difficult (they often change with me depending on my mood) there are some rankings that this Site/Magazine has way off. This is of course strictly my opinion but I think there might be many that would agree. See below: Tug of War - should be significantly higher up the list McCartney (the album) - should be further back on the list Back to the Egg - while I like it a lot, "Egg" would be further back Red Rose Speedway - Should be quite a bit further back At the Speed of Sound - Should be further back Memory Almost Full - Should be significantly higher up the list While Driving Rain (the subject of this thread) is certainly not top tier Macca, I don't think DR is the worst Paul album. In my opinion, DR is better than Wildlife, McCartney 2 and Pipes of Peace and maybe a couple of others.

Some of the positive reviews of Driving Rain (out of 5 stars): Rolling Stone 4 AllMusic 4 Blender 4 Writing for Uncut, Ian MacDonald stated "Possibly a grower, this album is certainly better than anything Macca's done for some while, if not the late masterpiece some of us have been hoping for." I guess music is subjective and to each his own, but to put this anywhere near Wild Life, Pipes Of Peace, etc. is absurd to me.

Always interesting what a list says about someone's character. For what it's worth, here's my top five post Beatles McCartney albums in chronological order: Ram Wild Life Pipes of Peace Driving Rain Chaos & Creation

Love this album and wrote the following blog about it: https://macca-news.blogspot.fr/2016/11/driving-rain.html

In no parallel universe should Off the Ground be ranked higher than London Town.

yup. i've always liked this one. giving up talking not so much but most of it is pretty good.

Knock half a dozen tracks off and edit most of the remaining ones and you'd be left with one of Paul's better solo albums. As it stands its an interesting if rather tiring listening experience.

too funny how different our tastes are. younger/newer fans seem to like the more recent stuff a little more than the older fans...

Don't stereotype! I'm 61, officially qualifying as old by most counts, and a fan since age 11. My favorite Paul albums are Tug of War, Chaos, MAF and Flaming Pie (the order sometimes changes depending on my mood, but those are always my top 4).

Just curious Bruce, but you weren't a fan since the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan? You are only a year younger than me (I was 8, almost 9, in Feb. 1964)

lol. t.o.w. and Chaos are soooo much better than the other two you like. and why are there lists of favorite lp's when this is a thread about driving rain?

I enjoyed DV when it came out. and didn't understand why it was not a hit. It the most rocking album Paul did. his voice was amazing in the rock tracks. the band was really great . the guitar work, the bass and the drums, and also full of melodies. take a simple song like "Tiny Bubble" .. the melody stays in your head forever. I expected this album will be looked at differently after 10-20 years in one of the oldest thread about the album (in the early years of the forum). Glad some fans here started to enjoy it more now.

Not quite that early. I was a fan starting when my older brother brought "Sgt. Pepper" home from college.
