Earlier I was trying to think of Paul's songs that best exemplified his superior bass playing. There were a few that came to mind (Let Me Roll It...) ...
Paul McCartney has come up with the most infectious bass-lines of all time. "Let Me Roll It" is not one of them. Not slamming the song at all, but this song's merits are more in the overall track and its guitar-riff.
I know he plays guitar in the more recent live versions, but on the original recording, the bass has a bigger presence than his newer live performances. The rift still has the biggest role in the song, and it isn't an intricate bass line, but it carrys the song. You can hear it best in WOA, I guess that's the version that I was thinking of, because it's much more existent. Good ol' Rickenbacker.
The Wings Over America bass line for "Let Me Roll It" is my absolute favorite version. So much more feeling to it...and a much wider presence of the 'E'. Plus as you mentioned, 'tis the good ol' Rickenbacker! I wish Paul still played bass on that one, but if he did, I'm sure it would be watered down from '76...like he's done with "Coming Up" and "Letting Go".

Lovely Rita! I love the bass in that song so much. Already mentioned, but I also really love Something and Hey Bulldog. I find myself "singing along" with the bass on those songs.

Also I remember reading somewhere in an interview about one of the Beatles songs that he wrote a very difficult bass line for. He never intended to play it live so he made it very intricate. What was it?
I believe it was Fixing A Hole. He played it on the '93 New World Tour, but they had trouble getting it to sound right. I don't think he's played it with a full band since.
I thought it was a different one. Didn't he just say that kind of recently? About not intending to play it live?
Are you thinking of "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey"? He mentioned in an interview last year that a lot of fans request that song, but the timing and arrangement was a bit difficult for playing live.

Also, I think his bass playing is hard to copy. It's very fluid or seamless. Whatever the right word is.

Incredibly sublime... Hey Bulldog. One of the best bits of bass. A "rare" Beatles song, in the total context of the catalogue, yet it was afforded some of the finest bass playing ever. A lazy bass player would've rolled out anything perfunctory for what was deemed a "throw-away." He rolled out something brilliant. * not that I deem Hey Bulldog a throw-away. I love this song, and in particular the vocal and fun of it all.

Me too. And I was amazed and overjoyed when all the disparate and loose ends of the Lady Madonna clip were finally patched together to create the original Hey Bulldog film clip!
