My five favorites: 1. Somebody who cares 2. One of these days 3. Coming Up (although studio version is not my favorite) 4. Distractions 5. Figure of eight 6. Footprints 7. Wanderlust 8. No more lonely nights 9. We got married 10. Only love remains
Have to say your choice would mirror mine almost completely. Somebody who cares does not get anywhere near the plays that it should.

Somebody who cares is one of the first songs I heard from him and now, despite i know all his discography, i still believe is one of his best songs. Maybe the lyrics are ridiculous, but the melody and specially the way he sings really delights me. By the way, i said "my five favorites" and i made a list of ten. Paul is so big for a five songs list

You're right. Somebody Who Cares is a superb track.

Not a bad list, although I can't have Pretty Little Head. Very ordinary song, in my opinion. I tried to like it, even bought the 12 inch singe, but it's just never done it for me. And Good times Coming, Talk More Talk and even This One would be jettisoned from my list, in favour of Ballroom Dancing, Keep Under Cover, Ebony and Ivory and However Absurd.... and I am going to throw in Tug of Peace. Love the vocal when he lets rip. Oh, and I almost forgot, I like the fun of Spies Like Us. Great film clip.

You have a fair point toris. I've already admonished myself for leaving off the splendid Somebody Who Cares. I agree about Ballroom Dancing, Keep Under Cover and However Absurd, great suggestions. I can't however agree with you about those Press to Play tracks. I find that album bubbles with sharp melodic hooks, left, right and indeed centre. As for This One, you must be joking? That's one of Paul finest moments imo, of a fine album Flowers...

A great list.... I am one who loves Stranglehold!..... underrated.... I need to include Coming Up cos it just sneaks officially into the criteria, and I think it is one of his best solo songs ever. Might even throw in Temporary Secretary, which took me awhile to appreciate, but it has attached itself to me... One of These Days...I have to have Ballroom Dancing.... And However Absurd.... But you've got a pretty good list there. And you kept it to 15!... ps. Not his best song, by some shot, but I've got a sneaky pleasure for Spies Like Us...

Give My Regards to Broad Street was one of my favorites as I started to get into Paul's 80s period. So Bad takes the cake from that album.
-
So which song that Paul wrote do we think is most representative of the 80s ?

Ebony and Ivory, Say Say Say and My Brave Face!! But they are not my favorites. I prefer So Bad, Wanderlust and Somebody Who Cares.

I'm thinking 'No More Lonely Nights" is his best 80's representation. Perhaps his last biggest charter. Say, Say, Say of course, and Ebony and Ivory, which despite the knocks, I quite like..... a lot... better songs in the mix, but they will be the ones that step out of the 80's more than others. Doesn't mean they are my definitive faves, but they are the ones, I think, that he will be remembered for from that period... I still think his 80's output is underrated.... A lot of stuff I love from this period. Always brings back good memories.

I go to Say Say Say because Michael is so 1980s to me given I grew up in the 80s.

Although 'Ebony & Ivory' is one of his must successful songs, I don't really like it. Just like Peter Ames Carlin says in his Paul's biography 'it begins like a peace song but finally, it goes nowhere'. Anyway, is a good song. I have to admit, I totally forgot 'No more lonely nights'!!! I can't believe it so, NMLN goes in and 'My brave face' goes out. There you have, IMO, the three most representative songs: NMLN, 'Say Say Say' and 'Ebony and Ivory'.
