Macca doing his best Meatloaf impression.

I'm curious: I know that you're not a big fan of Off The Ground. Which albums -- from each decade ('70s through today) -- would you say are the most solid, defining Paul McCartney albums of their time? For me, Flaming Pie is his best album of the '90s. But I have trouble deciding which is his best album of 2000-2010.
Though it's not my favourite these days, i prefer RAM, Band On The Run is Paul's defining '70's album, Tug Of War is his best '80's collection and as you say Flaming Pie is his best '90's album by a long way. I think that Chaos And Creation In The Backyard and Memory Almost Full are neck and neck for best album of the last decade, Chaos has less weak moments, but it's overall downbeat feel makes it a slog all the way through, MAF is easier to sit through as a whole.

Footprints.

RMartinez:
Yeah, I read Paul wrote ONCE UPON LONG AGO and BEAUTIFUL NIGHT for PRINCESS BRIDE, but Rob Reiner thought the songs too sentimental, and rejected them, opting for Mark Knopfler to score the film. What does he know????
I never knew that, he did write a bit of cheesy smooch in the 80's.

Who knows? Paul gets inspired by the most random things.

Press to Play is one of my favorite albums. It certainly showed Paul's ability to work with contemporary shifts in music. I enjoyed the whole Broad Street project as well. Flowers In The Dirt was one of the first solo Macca albums that made me a fan. So Paul in the '80s has always been a joy to me. It's just a shame that 90+ percent of his '80s songbook has a hard time getting fresh air outside of the hardcore fans. As for the '90s, Off the Ground was a great sendoff for the World Tour band. I've always thought that "C'mon People" is awesome and a bit epic. I think Flaming Pie takes the cake (no pun intended) for anything Paul's done after the '80s in regard to original music (not counting The Fireman).

The mid 80s were definitely a not so good period for Paul, and I'm not a great fan of many of the 80s songs mentioned so far on this thread (Beautiful Night and Footprints not included - those are both good). For me Paul's best songs from the 80s are: Distractions The Pound Is Sinking Somebody Who Cares Rainclouds (B-side to the dreadful "Ebony and Ivory") Put It There Here Today That Day Is Done I'll Give You A Ring (another B-side) Tug Of War Pipes of Peace This One We All Stand Together plus several from McCartney II but not sure whether they count or not here (Temporary Secretary, Check My Machine, Coming Up etc.) Songs that irritate me the most are: Spies Like Us, Talk More Talk, Press, Motor of Love, Ebony & Ivory.

Every couple years I pull out "Press to Play" and try really hard to like it, and I just can't, except for "Footprints," which sounds likes like it's dropped in from some other album. Most of P2P is a fairly desperate-sounding attempt to sound modern, and it just doesn't work. The production doesn't help, especially on tunes that have some potential, like "Only Love Remains." Of his '80s output, "Tug of War" is light-years ahead of anything else. He didn't get close to that level of quality again till "Flaming Pie." For my money his work from "Pie" on is his most consistently high-quality since the end of the Beatles.

I have to agree with you Bruce, even Flowers In The Dirt starts to plummet once This One is over, only That Day Is Done lifts it momentarily from it's quality drop. Tug Of War despite Ebony And Ivory is Paul's best '80's record, and as you say we had to wait until Flaming Pie for a really good Macca album again.

I've always thought fans tend to overvalue Flowers in the Dirt because it represents such a rebound from the depths of his mid-'80s albums. It definitely has its moments, but it's really uneven.

In away it's a typical Paul album, some giddy highs and some plummeting lows with a few okay tracks in there too. HIGHS MY BRAVE FACE WE GOT MARRIED FIGURE OF EIGHT THIS ONE THAT DAY IS DONE LOWS ROUGH RIDE DON'T BE CARELESS LOVE HOW MANY PEOPLE MOTOR OF LOVE
-
Not to forget ALL the singles from Flowers in The IDrt: My Brave Face Put It There Figure Of Eight This One and the rest of the album ain't shabby either!
-
Its too bad Paul/Elvis didnt collaborate for the entire Flowers album. It would have turned out to be 1 of Paul's classics.
