There was an obscure musician from the early/mid 70's ( American I think ) that was compared an awful lot to Paul . He never made it big & for the life of me I can't remember his name . I know that's not much. Someone gave me a copied CD of his stuff a while ago that I misplaced .Anybody help?

There's a really great guitarist named Phil Keaggy, most of his discovery is instrumental, but he does sing on a few of his albums and I think he sounds a lot like Paul. He's mostly known in Evangelical Christian circles. He sites Paul and the Beatles as major influences. Google Phil Keaggy "Love Divine" for an example.

There is no musician like Paul... he is way too multifaceted. He's one of those 1 in a century type guys... Yes, you may find a musician that sounds like only part of the whole of Paul, but there is no one that fills all of his shoes, or wears as many hats... Go listen to the whole of Rushes, then Ecce Cor Meum, Oobu Joobu, Temporary Secretary, Dark Room, Blue Sway, Ocean's Kingdom, Kisses on the Bottom, Boots and Panties, Twin Freaks, Thrillington, Electric Arguments.... this is the same guy in ALL of those songs...

I was going to say Clifford T Ward, on the ballad side, though he didn't really have a rockier edge. I Know he was compared to Paul as a songwriter, quite a bit in the UK.

Cute responses, but Emitt Rhodes really did sound so much like Paul at moments that a few times I heard him on the radio in the early '70s and mistakenly thought it was a new McCartney record. You can hear some of his stuff here:

I was ready to answer Emitt Rhodes when I saw the topic title, nice to see others that like his music.

Ah, I see others have found this guy. Rhodes' best-known tunes are from his days with the group, "The Merry-Go-Round" and the singles, "Live" and, "You're a Very Lovely Woman". "Live" is funny because it is perhaps one of the most difficult songs to find on the Internet. It is "Live" as in "Live for Life", and not as "A Live Recording", and yet, in years past, searching for "Live" by The Merry-Go-Round would result in tonnes of pages devoted to Live Performances by every artist in the world. And yes. He sounds so much like McCartney that I really think it hurt him in the long run. And the main reason is because Emitt is not from Britain. He was born in Illinois, and yet in those 70's songs he is clearly singing with an accent. Most people will dis it as a mimicry. He has a new song, "Just Me and You" which is not channeling McCartney, and it sounds pretty good, though now he might be ripping Crystal Gayle? Boz Scaggs?

Never heard of Boots and Panties , but you are right. I do remember hearing Gilbert O'Sullivan many years ago and thinking it was Paul.

Yeppers Billy Joel is certainly influenced by the Mackster, some of his and his vocals too, to a degree, have always thought that so was amused by your post, mop. Emitt Rhodes--the name vaguely rings a bell. Hey Crystal Gayle, wondered what's become of her (guess I could google her, aye?) !
