It's such a wonderful song! Does Paul play the piano on it? What do you think?

It is a good tune. Very much like "Warm and Beautiful"'s little sister or something. What's funny about Off the Ground is that half of the songs are really nice natural sounding songs and the other half are really forced unnatrual sounding songs. All of which have great vocals. It's so uneven though. A very strange little album.

        hey

There is a very good chance that Paul is indeed playing piano on the recording Fussi - and yes, a wonderful song. Here is the list of instruments Paul plays on the album, "Off The Ground."

"Vocals, electric, acoustic & Spanish guitar, sitar, piano, Mellotron, Wurlitzer, bass, drums, celeste, ocarina, congas, percussion."

Only Hamish Stuart is credited playing piano on the album as well as Paul so on balance i think its more likely to be Paul on this particular song. I really like 'Golden Earth Girl' although some of the lyrics are a bit clumsy, especially the rather forced 'in eggshell seas' / 'in excelsis' joke.

It sure sounds like Paul on piano. That would probably be a safe bet.

Yes, the melody is wonderful - the lyrics, not so much.

it's the kind of song that if was on a Beatle album if would be remembered like Fool on the hill for instance, but, as it's "only" on a Paul McCartney solo album, it's seems not popular at all. At least now, time will put everything in its place.

Very good point. Some of the material on 'Off The Ground' has a really effortless feel to it (as if Paul was just enjoying the process of writing and the songs were just tumbling out). However some of it does sound very forced...particularly the more politicised stuff such as 'Looking For Changes' and the B-side 'Long Leather Coat'. I also agree with you referring to 'Golden Earth Girl' as 'Warm and Beautiful''s little sister; they are both very pretty little songs, and the verse chord structures are also a little similar.

Also, I would say it sounds like Paul playing piano on this one...particularly as it seems the kind of song he would have composed on the piano in the first place.

I was really taken aback the first time I heard "Golden Earth Girl" because it was the first time in a long time I heard Paul's voice completely dry with no effects after the glossy, overproduced 80's! It still gives me chills, this song sounds great!

fish in a sun beam Paul should bring this one out in a show here or there. it doesn't really get more beautiful.

If I was Paul I would have named it Fish In a Sun Beam thats a cool phrase in and of itself. fish in a sun beam

its like trying to catch the sun on the water..

I very much agree about the views on Off the Ground..many of the songs seem like good craftmanship rather than real songs..it has it's moments though, like Golden Earth Girl and Winedark Open Sea..but one of his lesser great albums imo..

Paul likes word-play. In one of his commentaries in the The McCartney Years DVD, he talks about how he likes that a couple of the lyrics in 1989's "This One" sound alike: "This swan..." and "This one." Paul is quirky that way sometimes. No biggie.

i think that only works for people who aren't Paul fans. I love both of them but I'm sure Fool on the hill is far better song esp. musically.

Not to quibble, but "Giolden..." is a tad bit musically superior.

another one on that album with the word play is "Oh I owe it all to you..", I like that kind of stuff, sweet when Paul does it. theres probably more examples on that album actually... although I have to say (sorry for always nit picking Paul! I only nit pick the music I love ), that following line "..you make me happy.." what was Paul thinking?! can't believe he liked that line... I agree with 21st Century that GEG would have been an amazing Beatles song, and would definitely be more recognized. very Beatley. even better than a lot of Beatles songs IMO. I just love that song

What was he thinking? That Linda made him happy, which she undoubtedly did. And that is the reason that Golden Earth Girl is not called Fish in a Sunbeam.

Woooooow good call (goldenearthgirl)femaleanimal.. good conection you made between my comments on the two songs very interesting.. it almost seems I gravitate away from the romantic, right?? oh well thats funny. you're right about the inspiration being the title... but to me fish in a sun beam makes the greater impact in the song. seriously, that song almost makes me cry but I have problems and no need to go that cheesey in a pop song with 'you make me happy.'. Paul's more creative than that. I understand his feelings for Linda, but there's no better way to say that!? I will say tho, it works for the same reason John singing Oh Yoko works.. because you know its from the heart. and the tune is so good 😉
