Where Does New sit in the ranks of his last 3 LP's
-
For me it would be 9th place on Chaos above A Certain Softness & below Anyway. On Memory Almost Full it would be in 8th place above Vintage Clothes & below Ever Present Past. On Electric Arguments it would be in 4th place above Sun Is Shining & below Dance Till Were High. Overall a decent ranking song up against some strong songs, especially on Chaos & Maf.

I am afraid that New is entirely too fresh for me to assess. Plus, I overplayed it the first day I heard it and now I need to take a step back from it a few days before I can even begin to try to rank it.

AT THE TOP ..IT'S NEW MUSIC

Don't we have to wait until the album is released next month?

The song is out now, so i was meaning that individual song amongst the songs on his last 3 albums.

For me, it measure up quite well. I like it better than anything on CHAOS or DRIVING.

hard to rank it yet...need to get the entire album to place just one song in context. new is a great track...so far so good... Chaos was a great album.... It had a deep rich texture.....the songs were crafted.... Memory Almost Full was less so, but had brilliant moments... let's see what happens... We are arguing different shades of great right now. Paul could blow his nose into a hankie and we would all love it!

Actually, I would not love it if he did that.
Honestly, I can't even remember a tune off of CHAOS, that's how much of a non CD it was for me. Same with DRIVING. I am a fan, but I also have standards and expectations, and those CDs struck me as Paul just doodling, no real songs. Things John Lennon would have rejected out right. Or worked on with Paul. This NEW song is real refreshing, and to me is the best thing he has done since MAF, and maybe since FLAMING PIE.

It's a bold statement but I think I agree with you. It really is tough to say but right now I almost feel like it is a better song overall than anything on either Chaos (totally agree with you on that) or MAF. MAF has some good ones, it's tough. But New is really nice. To the original question of the thread, I'd say def in top 5 of anything from last 3 records.

Err...can we listen to it first?

Jenny Wren and Riding to Vanity Fair are "just doodling, not real songs"? I don't know how to answer that except shake my head in bewildered sorrow.

lets be clear, I'm talking about only the song New, and where it ranks amongst other songs, from the previous 3 albums. obviously not ranking songs I've never heard
that would be ludicrous!
News good pop though. tuned tight and hand crafted.
very cool. I still say it charts top 200. I haven't lost faith!

Agreed. I'll agree that Driving Rain was weak apart from a handful of songs, but Chaos and MAF were great, IMO. Carrying on the stellar late-career streak that started with Flaming Pie.

Don't hurt yourself! They are OK tunes I can't even remember. They sure aren't played on radio like classics. To be fair, neither is OFF THE GROUND or MY BRAVE FACE. Hey, I'm actually being positive about the new tune! I just don't think Paul has produced memorable music in a long time. This may change things. I hope so.

Oh, you mean those albums Paul doesn't even play songs off of anymore? Ok!

Good question...not very high in my book, I can't really think of any song I like less than "New" from his latest albums...Actually it's the Paul single I'm the least impressed/interested in since I first started waiting for his new releases in 1982...including "Press", so that's saying a lot. I'd need to listen to both of them again together, but I wonder if it's not a close cousin to "Return to Pepperland"? Now that was a song I was dying to hear after first reading about it in a book in something like 1990. It's cool that he's still putting new music out there, but I really hope that the album has more to offer than that, if not it might well be the "album too many"

OK, took a "vacation" from hearing it on Youtube. Just listened again and I place it higher than Ever Present Past, not sure how I would peg it against Fine Line as I am very partial to it as came off of what I consider Paul's best album--Chaos and Creation. As good as if not better than Fine Line. Can't wait for the album. Come on Rocktober 15!
-
How can you tell, not having heard the album yet? I plan to get the physical hard copy cd from a Walmart 'cause we live in the Material World
Can't wait
"haven't played 'My Brave Face' on the radio in a long time"--I've heard that song several times on the radio, and recently heard "Silly Love Songs" and "Get Back" played the same day on Bob FM "We Play Anything" radio, a station that plays music from all genres and decades, has a lot of variety. I've heard "Put It There" played in the local Food Lion grocery store several times and a woman singer doing "Maybe I'm Amazed" is played there fairly often. Surprising, that small town grocery store plays some cool stuff
I bet "New" features the same exciting diversity and variety as MAF. "Chaos and Creation" maybe could have used a few more hopped up scintillating manic ravers while MAF could have used a couple more with deep introspective profound gravitas--"New" might get the balance just right. Psyched up to the max to hear this...it's something to really look forward to, and don't have long to wait
