The Paul McCartney lyrics appreciation thread
-
Well, we all know that Paul might not have an image of being the best wordsmith ever in the music industry, but let's find good examples of the great lyrics from his career.
-
one of my alltime favourites: Your day breaks, your mind aches You find that all her words of kindness linger on When she no longer needs you - For No One.
-
never blame the circumstances, with romances seldom came, ? never pick a fight you're gonna lose Paul McCartney - Queenie Eye Lyrics
-
Sometimes I'd rather run and hide, Then stay and face the fear inside At The Mercy
-
Well now, Roxanne's a woman trainer She puts the Kids to bed She gives them pills in a paper cup And she knocks them on the head Ah, what can the sisters do? Ah, girl's school : Paul McCartney - Girls School Lyrics
-
This is the best: And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Nancy R:

says it all.

I know the point of this thread is to point out poignant and beautiful lyrics that Paul has written (and there are many), but I am a total sucker for his campy rhymes. I think he does them well and they can really make listening quite fun. Like, this one from Temporary Secretary often runs through my head (in his voice of course): Mister Marks Could You Send Her Quick 'Cause My Regular Has Been Getting Sick Or these lines from Big Barn Bed: Weeping On A Willow Sleeping On A Pillow Leaping Armadillo, Yes But the lyrics that guts me each time: Soon we'll be away from here Step on the gas and wipe that tear away. One sweet dream came true today

I find myself falling in love with some of the randomest lyrics at times...heres my little collection of memorys I have at the moment. some of them arnt the best paul has ever put out but I just think there important in some ways. youll have to excuse me since I haven't got to listen to all of pauls solo albums as close as the beatles ones since 1. I don't own them all 2. I haven't cemented the albums in stone in my head yet. "whos knows how long ive loved you, you know I love you still, Will I wait a lonely lifetime, if you want me to I will" I Will ( should just write It all out but id prefer that you listen to It again. just listened to it? do it again.) gets me every single time. so so beautiful.
" Bright are the stars that shine, dark is the sky, I know this love of mine, will never die and I love her" And I Love Her where do I start... ahh I love that line... "Day after day, Alone on a hill, The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still But nobody wants to know him, They can see that he's just a fool, And he never gives an answer, But the fool on the hill, Sees the sun going down, And the eyes in his head, See the world spinning 'round." Fool on the hill I sometimes on occasion relate to this song since I feel like such a outcast and do get ignored. in some ways I am the fool... I don't know, I just find myself going there at times. " I can wait another day, Until I call you You've only got my heart on a string, and everything a flutter" No More Lonely Nights always sticks with me as a nice line. sorta used but Its still a good line. "Could you be that person for me? Would you feel right setting me free? Could you dare to find my key?" Aligator I actually don't know what attracted me to this one. no clue. so yeah, I hope that can add to this awesome list

The official website doesn't have all the NEW album lyrics up yet. Does anyone know a good place to get them all? The CD booklet is not very convenient for those of us over 40!

I've always thought Paul's lyrics, and of course the beautiful music, to Distractions to be amongst the best ever written: What is this thing in life That persuades me to spend Time away from you? If you can answer this You can have the moon This is the place to be Anyway you can see There's a lovely view Why are there always So many other things to do? Distractions, like butterflies are buzzing 'round my head When I'm alone I think of you And the life we'd lead If we could only be free From these distractions, ooh The postman's at the door While the telephone rings on the kitchen wall Pretend we're not at home and they'll disappear, ooh I wanna be with you, tell me what I can do? Nothing is too small, away from all this jazz We could do anything at all Distractions, like butterflies are buzzing 'round my head When I'm alone I think of you And the things we'd do if we could only be through With these distractions I'll find a peaceful place far away From the noise of a busy day Where we can spend our nights Counting shooting stars Distractions, like butterflies are buzzing 'round my head When I'm alone I think of you And the things we'd do if we could only be through With these distractions Like butterflies they're buzzing 'round my head When I'm alone I think of you And the life we'd lead if we could only be free From these distractions Paul McCartney - Distractions Lyrics |

The lyrics, especially combined with the music, to "Too Much Rain" really move me. It's all so beautiful, and Paul M. can be so compassionate. "Too Much Rain" is a masterpiece. He sings it beautifully, too. (From Chaos and Creation in the Backyard album) Ditto "Anyway" and "This Never Happened Before," among other highlights from that same album

I love Distractions too..would be a nice addition to the acoustic part of the live set..would have been obvious to play it during the Unplugged session two years after Flowers...
-
I like the line in Queenie Eye, "Dogs and b*tch*s"
-
There is no end to what we can do together (together) The willow turns his back on inclement weather .... Hey it works! Love With A Little Luck! And my favourite... Long live all of us crazy soldiers, who were born under calico skies May we never be called to handle, all the weapons of war we despise - Calico Skies

I'm going with this one too. The defining legacy of the Beatles in many respects, and aptly slotted right there at the end. Although every time I get a shite email from some botherer at work, I do find myself singing: Yesterday, (insert annoyance) seemed so far away.....

I think he is one of the best lyricists ever, especially in pop. Some say that Lennon was much better but he was more like a singer/songwriter, where you kind of write your life. It's a different genre, McCartney do it occasionally, he becomes more or less personal, depending on what the song needs or that he has something to say, or just make something up. I love them both lyrically, McCartney is more playfull and surrealistic, Lennon also in 67-68, but not so much with his solo career, it's McCartney that continue with the 'meaningful nonsense'. I've written hundreds of poems (in Norwegian). Many times I sat down inspired by McCartney, but I'm only an amateur, I'm not a recognized author. Can I blame him for it, bad influence...

I like these alot.. Better give me some time for this heart of mine Cause I just can't take it all in Still we will remember Mama's little girl Paul McCartney - Mama's Little Girl Lyrics

Yes, intimate and nice. I also have a fondness for songs/lyrics like "Junior's Farm", "Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey "," Monkberry Moon Delight "," Getting Closer ", "Flaming Pie". .. I think they are imaginative and fun. Quite surreal.
