What’s your favorite 3 album run from Macca?
-
So this seems so basic that I?m wondering if it?s been done before
: If so I apologize.. but I?m curious what 3 consecutive studio albums would be your favorite ?3 album run? from McCartney? For the purposes of this thread I?m thinking we include his latest Fireman release, since he had so much input into it. But let?s exclude all other Fireman albums, and let?s also exclude Twin Freaks, Thrillington, all of his classical albums (sorry classical fans), Beatles albums and Live albums. If anyone is actually in love with his classical albums you can go ahead and include them, since they are completely legit works from Paul. I just didn?t want Ecce Cor Meum to break up that Chaos / MAF / Electric Arguments run for people. But break it up if you?d like! Hell, include whatever you like, but how about no Beatles, and no Live albums. So would your fav 3 be?.... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bd/RamMcCartneyalbumcover.jpg[/img] [img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/37/Electric_Arguments.jpg/220px-Electric_Arguments.jpg"/> For me it?s that Red Rose Speedway / Band On The Run / Venus & Mars trifecta. So what three do you rate as his strongest back to back to back efforts? there's just so many permutations!! thats why I figured I couldn't Poll it.. would have loved to. anyway, long live Macca's catalogue of 3 album runs.

Nice call Doris, thanks for checking in
I have a bunch of questions after reading your post, which since I cannot sleep, I will pose: 1) have you only heard Ram, BOTR and V&M then? 2) shouldn?t you have capitalized ?I HAVE HEARD? instead of ?GO BY THE ONES?? 3) Are there typically many people in that CD listening section of the library when you go there
4) Do they have a nice McCartney selection? 5) I see Myrtle and Petey are Paul fans? who?s the dog? 6) Is it also a McCartney fan? 7) How could a sparrow dig Clapton more than Macca?
-
How could you say Red Rose Speedway is better than London Town? But anyway, I'd go for his most recent three. Chaos, Memory, and Arguments. Bam.
-
Well for me it's either : Press To Play - Flowers In The Dirt - Off The Ground, or Flaming Pie - Driving Rain - Chaos. I'm only counting studio releases with original songs as I know both Unplugged & Run Devil Run cropped up in the run of these CD's.
-
I'll pick the run of Flaming Pie, Run Devil Run, Driving Rain, Chaos, MAF and Electric Arguments as the strongest run in his career with Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Magical, White Album and Abbey Road as a close second..
Okay I know, I left Yellow Submarine out in the last one..

ALMOST right. your first 3 are bang on the money....'pie','driving','chaos', who could argue with that..but 'memory' has way too many dodgy tracks and seemingly[ although im not the best to judge] some real sound issues. it was also given away for free in an english newspaper which was a pretty fitting end to an average set that did at least contain 3 great songs.

so thats a SIX album run isnt it 'maccamad'??? p.s i do agree though.
-
This is a bit difficult , but i'm going with : 1. Back To The Egg ( A masterpiece) 2. McCartney II ( Very patchy, with some beautiful unfinished melodies) 3. Tug Of War ( A big commercial hit , full of top songs ) I think these three albums show rocker Paul , experimental Paul and classic Paul . With only Back To The Egg successfully pulling all three categories together to form a coherent album

Ha ! Yes it is !! Well there you go, a fantastic 6 album run for me, I find MAF & EA ok but not high enough for me to make it an 8 album run.

I'm still trying to figure out two consecutive favourite albums at the moment.
All my favourite albums have been caught between mediocre efforts.
-
Band On The Run - Venus and Mars - Wings Over America These three lps cemented the Wings legacy. A great album, a solid and rocking follow up, and a sensational live record!
-
The last three are my favorite and IMO his best, followed closely by "RRS", "BOTR" and "V&M".

Well I can find two in a row I love but never three. My absolute, all-time favorites are McCartney and Ram but I'm not a huge fan of Wild Life. I love Chaos and Fireman but I don't like MAF all that much.
I can't play this game.

I was just reading a review of Driving Rain on AllMusic.com by Stephen Thomas Erlewine (his reviews of Paul's work tend to be thoughtful and fair). Anyway, I was reading along and Erlewine says something directly relevant to this thread:
As the record (Driving Rain) draws to a conclusion, he hauls out a bunch of inventive, winding jams that may be a little excessive, yet they're exciting because he hasn't tried something like this in years. He's grooving on making music again, just like he did on Flaming Pie and Run Devil Run. Driving Rain may not be as coherent as Pie, nor as relentless as Devil, but it's rich, layered, ambitious, and successful. Since becoming a solo artist, Paul McCartney has never delivered three records in a row so overstuffed with imagination, melody, and enthusiasm as he has in these three albums.
So there you have it. The best three in a row in this guy's view: Flaming Pie, Run Devil Run, and Driving Rain. Here's the link to the full review: http://www.allmusic.com/album/driving-rain-r557359/review

That's easy, very obviously VENUS AND MARS SPEED OF SOUND LONDON TOWN And if you disagree....you're wrong, haha )

Its not a bad call that he liked RDR so much, thanks for posting that Michelley! That one would break up that Flaming Pie / Driving / Chaos run people are liking. Its sort of like with John?s albums, I?d definitely have RnR in my top 3 of his; Mind Games, RnR, W&Bs, no sweat. I see your issue in choosing as well, especially with loving Ram. For me Ram is in that valley of early albums too.. surrounded by basically two ?transitional? half albums, plus RRS then on the one side. Ram?s almost my top McCartney album, but no way I could include it? best three in a row makes it frustrating!. You?re always including at least 1 that wouldn?t be in your top 3 basically.. choosing lesser of evils
I had a feeling the Chaos / MAF / AE would steam roll for peoples fav 3, and I totally understand why. Amazing that Paul has done such amazing work so late in the game. If he somehow pulls off topping AE, I?ll be in a state of
BTTE / M2 / TOW is a solid run too. and ewanme, I like your style! You dig Rockshows and Boats
dont know if thats true but if it is its
So while I?m hearing about six album runs now, I?ll take Ram / WL / RRS / BOTR / V&M / LT!! (Kills me not getting to Back to the Egg there.. 7 may be the # on something like this.
) I?m waiting for the day someone comes and says ?gimme Pipes, Broadstreet, and Press to Play?. Words to live by. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/82/BroadStreetCover.jpg/220px-BroadStreetCover.jpg[/img] [img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/41/PressTPCover.jpg/220px-PressTPCover.jpg"/>

that is interesting btw that the CD was given away with the paper? was that the act of some huge Macca fan who ran the paper? or was it a gift from Paul somehow to the people of that area? or was the label literally dumping overstock??? couldn't be that. why would they? Those would sell at somepoint, for some price. also, was the give away CD packaged differently at all from the standard jewel case? edit** actually I'm an idiot.. probably just a promo by the label, right? wonder what circulation was. I really like MAF. very diverse and cool songs.
-
I wonder what the mods favorite 3 album runs would be? calicosky, martinput, Fiona M, Rocio Record. Sergeant_Pepper, I?m always curious about your musical tastes and stylings. I?ve actually wondered what opinions you guys/gals have on a lot of different threads around here. You?re probably like encyclopedias of Paul/music knowledge! with I'm sure many choice intelligent opinions
Anyway, care on..
-
I know it's too each his/her own, but I'm always amazed at the opposition to MAF. No biggie, just surprises me since I love it so much
If I had to pick a three-album run, I'd probably go with Chaos/MAF/EA. He's had stronger albums, sometimes two stronger ones in a row, but I honestly feel that this has been his most consistently great run of at least three albums since the Beatles disbanded.
