Rockshow DVD/Blu-Ray - Your Thoughts
-
Here in the UK it's out today, the postman delivered it this morning via Amazon, opened it up and straight it went into the DVD player! Not quite what I was expecting, which was basically the 1981 movie with better sound and picture, this has been completely reassembled with loads of extra footage thrown in. I'm not completely certain about the jittery picture and and the colour filtering throughtout the disc - this is supposedly a transfer from original 35mm film(?!?) at times it looks as if it's a video file playing on a computer with graphics card that needs updating
Don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but it is very different, and takes some getting used to if you've loved the original for years as I have. Of course, it is Wings live in 1976, great band, fabulous entertainment, and the extra shots are very nice to have, so I'm still pleased to have it.

My first thought when you said a "jittery picture and colour filtering" is that you either have a bad disc or you have a bad Blu-ray player. You might try updating your player software. Check your owner's manual. Unless you're saying the movie was shot like that? I don't recall people saying that about the theater showings.

Is the sound mix the same as the cinema version, i.e backing vocals buried in the mix?

No, I have been playing this on a standard DVD player through a 32" LED TV. No computer involved. The original for the most part definitely doesn't look like this! 35mm movie film doesn't look like this without being 'tweaked' on a computer workstation, the results of which you may or may not like. The jitter has to be an artifact of something going wrong at either the transfer, editing or post-production process, or perhaps all three
On the same DVD player/TV I played Deep Purple's "Rises Over Japan/Phoenix Rising", Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains The Same", Marc Bolan "Born To Boogie" - superb, faithful, dynamic discs ..that's what I was hoping for here.

No, it's miles better, if a little 'dry' and lacking ambience (a minor niggle). Crisp and detailed with lots of groovy Macca Rickenbacker bass
, the vocals are clearly audible and sit well in the mix. I am listening in regular stereo, through a hi-fi, not 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS. The audio on my VHS and laserdisc was appalling; I was never happy with it even when I used to play it back on high-end equipment.

Thanks for that! I plan to listen in regular stereo via headphones. Can't wait.

My Rockshow DVD arrived this morning. Beautifully presented in a book Very impressed and I can't wait to play it. Seen it before at the movies twice and on video. Great performances. Particularly like the sound quality of the remastered Rockshow and the picture is a lot brighter. Been waiting for this years.

That book is a nice surprise, a 32-page A5 hardback, a lot more than I was expecting from a single DVD release
-
Agree. I was also expecting a standard single DVD. Was really excited to see the book. Have been looking forward to this release and have not been disappointed.
-
I will write something tomorrow because they sent the dvd today and it will come tomorrow.
. I heard many negative voices from you-is that dvd worth ?
-
electricargument. I have played about half of the DVD and my view is that it is excellent. The sound is really good and the picture is a lot clearer and brighter than the video. Personally I think this is a must have DVD for Paul McCartney/Wings fans. Hope you get as much enjoyment from Rockshow as I have.

The vocals are up front which takes a liitle getting used too..but What I dont like is the sound goes up and down ...almost sounds like a radio speaker..maybe it's my tv old as it is
cool book nice extras
-
Sounds ok to me. Maybe it's your player or maybe you've got a dodgy disc? Maybe worth checking it out.
-
Ok I know because today i've got it
! It's really excellent and that's someting that i have waited for many years
. The sound is great and the picture is also ok

I saw Rockshow at the cinema and wasn't keen on the 5.1 mix in the theatre so was interested to hear it at home. The 5.1 DTS mix could be better, like most fans the lack of backing vocal volume is puzzling and Jimmy's guitar solos seem lower in the mix too. The picture quality is very good considering the age of the film, but i think the 5.1 mix on the Rockshow McCartney Years portion sounds better to me.

On the Steve Hoffman forum there's a few others who've commented on the sound issues, it seems that the DVD and the Blu-Ray have the bass signal dropping in and out on both the stereo and 5.1 mixes. I must admit i noticed it when i listened to the 5.1 DTS mix today, very odd indeed, at first i thought my Subwoofer was on the blink, but it seems it's how it's mastered.

That's weird. I got a promo double dvd some weeks ago, and there was no issue with the bass signal whatsoever on that. I played it on my sound system full bore and, although I don't have rears, I found the bass sound constant and sublime. In fact the whole sound balance was magnificent.

The remastered CDs sound better than the Blu-ray.
