New Wingspan, 1985-present

This is a tougher question because Paul's been less of a chart presence since the end of the period covered by Wingspan, and responses should probably be in a wider range than in my other thread. But, what if Paul released a 2CD anthology now, to pick up where Wingspan left off? I figure it would look something like this: Spies Like Us (4:4 Stranglehold (3:36) Press (4:43) Angry (3:36) Once Upon a Long Ago (4:10) Midnight Special (3:5 My Brave Face (3:1 This One (4:10) Figure Of Eight (3:25) Put It There (2:10) Off the Ground (3:41) Hope Of Deliverance (3:21) The Song We Were Singing (3:54) The World Tonight (4:06) Calico Skies (2:32) Flaming Pie (2:30) Young Boy (3:54) Run Devil Run (2:36) Vanilla Sky (2:46) Lonely Road (3:16) Driving Rain (3:27) Fine Line (3:05) Jenny Wren (3:46) Friends To Go (2:57) English Tea (2:12) Dance Tonight (2:54) Ever Present Past (2:57) Only Mama Knows (4:17) You Tell Me (3:15) Mr. Bellamy (3:39) That Was Me (2:3 Nod Your Head (1:5 Nothing Too Much, Just Out of Sight (4:55) Sing the Changes (3:43) Highway (4:16) I Want To Come Home (3:34) My Valentine (3:14) I?m at 127:09 here, so as many as 10 songs could be added. Thoughts?

I guess since there's room, you could start by adding songs that were singles that I never included before: Pretty Little Head (4:03) Only Love Remains (4:16) Beautiful Night (5:0 No Other Baby (4:17) From a Lover to a Friend (3:4 Freedom (3:34) Only Our Hearts (4:21) That would be 156:36, or about 78:18 per CD. Perfect.

Wingspan is 40 tracks, I believe. Very nice selection! You've picked many that would deserve to be on a "history" follow-up. I'd include these, as well as some of the collaborations, too: - Ebony and Ivory - So Bad - Say, Say, Say - Pretty Little Head - Beautiful Night - Your Loving Flame - Follow Me - Only Our Hearts - Cut Me Some Slack
-
Not sure why it would be called Wingspan when Wings didn't exist past 1980.

E&I, So Bad and SSS would be part of the period already covered by the original Wingspan. As you can see, I had more space to fill so I ended up adding PLH, BN, and OOH. Follow Me and Your Loving Flame come down to personal preference, I guess. Cut Me Some Slack. Duh! Good call! Totally forgot about that one. Great way to finish off the 2nd disc.

Let's not concern ourselves with semantics... I am not advocating that it should be called wingspan, just saying it would be the later career counterpart to it.

Damn! Forgot Big Boys Bickering. That means I have to cut something else out... two, actually, if I want to incude CMSS.

Yeah, but they weren't included on Wingspan. I think a lot of the general fans will be expecting those more, though they may not necessarily be my own favorites - I think they'd have a place on a compilation for post-Wings. Not overly crazy about anything on CACITBY, but Fine Line and Follow Me are the 2 I would pick off the album for the sake of including something from it. Personal preference is gonna factor into just about anybody's list, especially with material post-Wings. Slack would be a rockin' end to that 2nd disc, though before closing it out, I'd have to wait and see about this new album coming.

Maybe, but that kinda goes against the format that seems to be established. Wingspan is his "official" intro into the best of his 1970-1984 period. If a companion piece is to be released, I expect it would pick up where that one left off, and not try to fill in the (very) few real gaps that existed in the first collection.

I've been a longtime advocate for this idea: http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=73078&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Good point -- however, let's not overlook that the Wingspan CD had at least ten songs that are technically non-Wings-related.

It's just a bad album name, that's all. It should be seen as what it was really meant to be - a retrospective of Paul's work from 1970-1984.

You should have told dcshark to 'cut you some slack'!

Now that I think about it, a 20th century piece would be cool. The first one is roughly a 15 year period. A follow-up could be '85 to '99. '85 to today just has so much material to pick from. '85 to '99 leaves something like 4 or 5 original solo albums, without including live, Fireman, or cover material (i.e. Russian album, Run Devil Run).

I am sure there will be some kind of "Paul McCartney Essential" collection, but obviously not that since he's not a Columbia artist. I like these lists, but I do wonder what he thinks of his production from 2001-2006 given they are the years he was with HM. But these lists are good. I would add "Back On My Feet", a McCartney/McManus collaboration that was the B-Side of "Once Upon A Long Ago" that never gets the love it deserves. And I would omit "Nod Your Head." That song should never be played again.

By the way, is there a dark sexual connotation to that song? "if you really love me baby, nod your head" Since getting that album, I've wondered.

I remember the paraplegic myth attributed to "Nod Your Head"...but THAT'S a first.

LOL.. I mean, if this was a Jagger/Richards-penned tune, I wouldn't even ask.

Any best of Macca collection would have to include songs from Electric Arguments: Sing the Changes Highway Dance Till We're High Those 3 songs rank up there with anything he's ever done.
