It's a shag...

not a mullet... There is a difference. Paul's hair was cool. Mullets were (and are) not! I should know, I've had both at one time or another growing up. I admit, I had the mullet for a longer period of time in the 80's! With the reissue of Rockshow, I keep hearing people refer to Paul's mullet. I especially liked the funky mullet Paul had around the time of Red Rose Speedway and again in '74 when he visited John (and Harry Nilson) in LA. Goofy subject for a thread, I know, but I just thought I'd get it off my chest!

The upcoming new book "Paul On the Run in the 1970s" should provide a lot of pictorial illustration on that topic

Do/did the Brits actually call that hairstyle a "shag" as well though? I ask for the most obvious of reasons! Seriously though - I personally would say it's a bit of both. Shag imo generically refers to a layered haircut (which he certainly had) but that lovely bit of hair than hangs past his neckline legitimately makes it a mullet in my book. The problem is that mullet has become a derogatory term for many people and is used to refer to most extreme "short side, long tail, greaser" look. Long live the *proper* Macca mullet!!

While I think the mullet is harder to pull off, I do think it can look good if done properly and on the right person. As previously mentioned, Paul's RRSW-era mullet looked good. I think David Bowie also had a good mullet during his "Ziggy Stardust" phase. Unfortunately, more times than not, a mullet just comes of looking tacky on most...

What did they used to say? All business in the front & a party goin on in the back.

Thank-you! That has been bothering me, also. Shags were '70's, and much nicer than mullets, which I never even heard of until sometime in the mid to late 80's!

I had a couple of nice shags in the 70's. Ah, memories...

You are talking about hairstyles aren't you?
Or do Aussies use shag in the same way as us Brits (i.e. its a slang term for sexual intercourse). It also makes me smile when Americans talk about being pissed (that means drunk where I come from) - and describing Paul as wearing suspenders makes me think he's suddenly turned in to Frank N Furter! Two countries separated by the same language!

You're right about it being a shag instead of a mullett. I should know as I had a shag through the 70s until the early 80s. It was the only 'boyish' haircut my mom would allow on me. I've often wondered what the difference is between a shag and a pageboy. Some called my hair 'pageboy' but I think it's something to do with the cut of the bangs. as long as it had boy in the title, i was happy

Yeah ya got me. I was being a bit naughty...had many a language barrier clash when I first went to the USA> The amount of trouble I had using the word, "pissed." And the laughs and weird looks when I asked in pubs, "where are ya bogs?" "What?" "Your toilets...where is the toilet?" (cue much laughter) "Oh you want the BATHROOM..." And if you make a mistake writing...never...EVER ask for a rubber!!!!"
