Those Cringe-Inducing Lyrics
-
Paul could have been a bit more creative with his use of metaphor in song. For example, I dont know exactly how many times (its a lot!) he's used a sports analogy (e.g., scored the winning goal) in song, but its got old after the first time!

I LOVE Paul, but c'mon now...... If you really love me, baby Better than stayin' in bed If you really love me, baby Nod your head If you really love me, baby "Till you fall down dead", she said If you ever wanna make it Nod your head Nod it up, nod it down Side to side, round and round If you ever wanna prove it Then you hang it on a thread If you ever wanna shake it Nod your head If you think the life you're leading Is better then the life you led If you like the life you're livin' Well, nod your head Well, nod it up, nod it down Side to side, round and round If you really love me, baby Better than stayin' in bed If you really love me, baby Nod your head
I LOVE that song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These lyrics get a whole lot better if you pretend it's a sexual euphemism.

"Don't look at me, it's plain to see."

Inspector Sands:
"Don't look at me, it's plain to see."
yeah but when the meter is as tight as it is in New, lyrics don't matter IMO. can't believe there are people that don't like New!? yeah we don't like awesome songs... whats that song on Off The Ground that has that line 'you make me happy..' thats almost the worst lyrical Paul cringe for me of his entire catalogue. otherwise I dig most of Paul's lyrics.
-
Well, that Off the Ground lyric is bad, but it's mainly the way it's delivered, it needs a harmony on it to take the edge of things, or a twist on it. As for New, it's not a lovely meter he's made.
-
As for "New" it's not a lovely meter he's made--what's that mean, Inspector Sands? Some of the "Freedom" lyrics always made me cringe, to be honest. I wondered if he was espousing going to war. I'd always thought he's completely and totally anti-war I chalked that up though to his being caught up in the 9/11 uproar-- he was right there in N.Y. when it happened. So the atrocity made even more of an impact on him. Also, New York seems to especially love him. And his Dad used to be a firefighter.
-
I love the song but hate the lyric: "In my green metal suit I'm preparing to shoot up the city" Cringe worthy indeed.

It's a punning reference to a Paul song of Sgt Pepper. As for Freedom, Macca said it was about how no one should take their freedom away, but he regretted it later got coopted by others to instill or force freedom on others ie neocons in Iraq.
