Joe English

Like most of us here, I love Joe's drumming on Wings Over America. While it's been fairly documented why Jimmy left the group (he wanted to start a new group) I never heard why Joe decided to leave Wings. Let's face it, Joe was totally an unknown when he joined Paul. On top of that he was young and at the peak of his careeer. Just seems odd to me that he got the opportunity of his life and he just walks out and leaves. Looking at the Rockshow DVD, it seemed like Joe was having the time of his life. He's just smiling throughout the concert. Can anyone give me some background on Joe's decision.

I believe it had to do with 2 factors: he was homesick for America, and he was deeply religious (I think he eventually became quite evangelical and has been doing that ever since).
-
Some of his Christian rock is actually pretty good.
-
The reasoning has changed over the years depending on when he tells the story. He did an interview with Beatlefan months after leaving where he indicated it was because he wanted to see if he could make it on his own and try new things. No mention of a car crash involving his wife. By the time we got to the mid 80's and he became a Christian rocker the story changed. His wife got in a car crash so he jumped ship from Wings to be by her side in America. I'm sure his wife had a car crash, but I think the timeline has been altered. Surely Paul would have known and used that as the reason and not "homesick". Seems suspicious...and it's a very convenient "born again" story. The story he tells now is about escaping the world of drugs and heathens that were in the Wings world. He's in a cult now. It's very ugly.

a cult? you have proof? he was living in nashville, tn back in the mid to late 8o's. i saw him a couple of times when he came into the record store where i worked. decent sort of bloke then.

aaahh... World Of Fatih Fellowship.. WOFF search it and the term "cult" comes upa lot... wow. sad.

By coincidence Sheryl Crow -- the singer/songwriter -- tweeted today about Joe English and Paul. Here was her tweet: Watched Wings doc "Rockshow" on bus last night. Blew me away!! @PaulMcCartney, you are beautiful! & Joe English where are you?! Incredible! Kinda cool to think of Sheryl Crow and her tour bus watching Paul on Rockshow.

Sheryl Crow's statement is the one heard round the world. So many people have scratched their heads saying "where is he". WOFF is bad news. The articles I've read have disturbed me.

Michelley, Thanks for telling us about Sheryl Crow's tweet. That is great to hear. I've been a huge Macca fan since 1964 (I'm 64 years young) and I still can't believe the disrespect that Paul has received over the years from the press and many people in the 40-65 age bracket. I even hear it on the radio. So many people in my generation still believe that Paul is just a "silly pop song type of artist and mainly gets by because he was an ex- Beatle. They also believe that John was the key Beatle. I would tell anyone of that belief to just see Rockshow or listen to Wings Over America. To hear that Cheryl Crow tweeted that opinion is a big thing. It's nice to see someone really knowledgable about music make that kind of comment. Maybe a few more people will watch Rockshow because of it and realize that Paul's little Band was the real deal. Wings Over America is one of the best Pop-Rock Live Albums of all time and that was one of the best tours ever. Hopefully, more young people (under 30) without the prejudice will discover Wings.

Sigh... The Jimmy/Joe era was my favorite incarnation of Wings.
