Paul songs that don't sound like Paul songs

I found "222" very unusual for Paul. .
I don't get that track. It's one of the reasons that I'm lukewarm about "bonus tracks" in general.
Really Audi? I usually agree with you, but I happen to love this Jazzy number
really love the horns at 1:03 and 2:24 and also love the bit at 1:56 just a great number I never tire of hearing. Not sure why you don't like bonus tracks? They may not always be cohesive with the whole album, but to me, they're like an extra surprise present that you weren't expecting Another one that I love with video is Blue Sway! The music fits that video so well and I'm right there riding a wave, in the curl... LOVE IT Paul's songs are all so varied, they aren't really cookie cutter or formulaic. Did he ever do more with the Spanish 12 string guitar? Paul goes in so many directions with music and then he's still always pulling another surprise out of his magical musical mind. He's so inventive and innovative I'm always amazed at the next brilliant thing."222" always strikes me as his take on Dave Brubeck's "Take Five".

I can hear that! I enjoyed the drums on that particular version. Blue Rondo A La Turk is one of my favs of Brubeck...

I love Light from your lighthouse as it's been produced. Vocals are awesome! Is this song written by McCartney? It sounds as a revisited old classic.
It's pretty obvious Paul was *very* inspired by this song:
It's almost not fair to call it a McCartney original. -

Talking about his new album, Paul is saying that some people are "surprised it's me" when they hear the new songs. What songs does he already have that are like this? "Ou Est Le Soleil?" and the Fireman stuff (especially the first two albums) come immediately to mind for me. "Motor Of Love" you certainly wouldn't guess until the vocals come in.
The Fireman and Cut Me Some Slack are not "Paul McCartney" releases so they are not meant to sound like "Paul" songs in any case. : Whatever that means. What is a "Paul song" anyway? His songs are every kind of music.

He made a provocative intriguing enigmatic statement to the effect the "New" songs "are not necessarily in the style people expect from me." As noted he's displayed a multiplicity of styles and genres, so you wonder what he meant by that--will some "white gospel" numbers be on there? And "blue-eyed Celtic soul," though he's had superlative songs along those lines, before. Maybe he meant a strongly defined Motown-style soul song. Or hip hop or rap? A polka? Latin salsa? A full on George Jones type "old style" country ditty? Or dance music?

The first part of Little Lamb Dragonfly to me sounds like double-tracked John vocals to me. And with the eccentric range of Paul's music you can be surprised all the time.

Admittedly, I'd only listened to this track on my PC at work -- which has not-so-great speakers. By the time the deluxe edition of MAF was released, I'd already heard the 13-track edition of the album numerous times on a decent system. Listening to it now -- wow! -- I missed out on so much! Miles Davis would've been proud to call this one his own! I stand corrected. Also, "Blue Sway" is a favorite of mine. I think Sade should record it, by the way.

Temporary Secretary sounds like Kraftwerk's The Robots and I've always thought This One sounds like a Fleetwood Mac Song it could have fitted on their Rumours album along side songs like Don't Stop and Go Your Own Way .

I say, I twig you're correct in your surmise, Sir Guy, upon reflection

Glad to hear you had a better listen through some decent speakers! Miles Davis I love his Kind of Blue album! I do like the idea of Sade recording Blue Sway, you are spot on with that one! She does that same vibe really well!!

There's a Blockheads feel too. All that "she can be a belly dancer..." part was him channeling Ian Dury. He even said as much.

I like Paul's jazzy/funkier tracks. "Arrow Through Me" is as solid of an r&b track as anything by Rufus & Chaka. "Write Away" is in that league, too.

I like to read all the comments about Light from Your Lighthouse..I love this track! I think Paul nicked the chorus from an old traditional, I have heard old versions of this song..Paul's version has always reminded me of Tom Waits..

You are certainly correct, but those things wouldn't exist without Paul. I'm just pointing out that when he says people are "surprised it's me" about the new songs, he's not considering just how much music he's put out that defies expectations. The book "The Unknown Paul McCartney" chronicles a lot of that. When I first read the description, I found it unlikely to fill a whole book, but it does! A pretty good read.

To You, off Back to the Egg, sounds like The Stranglers. Old Siam Sir is a bit like The Knack's My Sharona, that kind of era. Again and Again and Again is Boomtown Rats, though I believe Denny Laine wrote that. Agree with some of the other examples on this thread. Tired of Being Kicked Around or whatever it is, almost on Off the Ground, is another one, high production values, a bit Prefab Sprout, a negative lyric that works well, prefer it to Riding to Vanity Fair. Oh, Pretty Little Head too.
