"SIMPLY HAVING A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS TIME"
-
So, I'm hearing a different version of the subject Christmas song on the radio....D.C. area. They've mixed Paul's/Wings version with something/someone else that smooths it all out and gives it a kind of disco beat. I actually like it better than Paul's own version.
Anybody else familiar with this or know what I'm referencing???

There are two "new" (the first is about a year or two old, and the second is brand new)versions of the song that I'm familiar with: The Shins (Sounds like it's off of Pet Sounds, and I love it!)
Straight No Chaser (acapella version) Neither fits the disco beat you mentioned, though. -

Over in the Rockshow folder, someone posted the link to Chris Holmes' pre show mix that's been used as the regular play list for the Paul McCartney concert pre show...via a site called SoundCloud (or 'The Embassy'???) Here's the link
The reason I'm posting it here is because if you then click on the 'Paul McCartney' tag/link below, you'll find a host of Paul McCartney related remixes and covers...and there's at least 5 versions of Wonderful Christmas Time posted there (possibly more) -
I like it at Christmas time.

There seems to be a steady beat of some kind that is just not there in the original version...seems to smooth the song out and move it along. (Since you named the two...I believe I heard them say...Straight No Chaser. ) I like Paul's version, but the synthesizer, at times, seems to be played when it shouldn't be....if that makes sense. It's kind of like Linda was bashing away at it and not paying attention to the melody! (Sorry, Linda. Didn't mean to pick on you, but....somebody was playing it when they should not have been.....IMO. The "smooth" version seems to cover over that bashing about.
)

It was cool to hear the new a capella version in the grocery store this week.

This is one of the few Paul songs that I find just totally annoying.

The original is a bit...grating?...for the reasons you've mentioned.
The Straight No Chaser version is pretty good, but my favorite is the Shins' version.

Bah Humbug Bruce!

Always thought this was a throw-away song. And it is. Although it does grow. Sounds better as time goes on. In fact, I find myself singing along to it now. It has appreciated through the years. But it shrinks in comparison to Happy Xmas (War is Over).... Why that didn't go to Number One, I don't know..... it stalled, majorly... maybe too political for the time.... But it is just brilliant. Simple and brilliant.

Agree. I do wish, however, that he (now and then) had altered the lyrics a bit so that...."let's hope it's a good one" was, instead, sometimes "let's make it a good one. Minor complaint, to be sure, however.

Way better than 'Happy Christmas' which just grates, especially the kids choir, ouch!

I love it...especially the video with Linda.

The Children's choir sings...."ding, dong, ding, dong.... Yeah. That and the pounding synthesizer grates....but, as someone mentioned, I, too, find myself singing along to the song nevertheless...when I'm by myself in my car, of course!!! On the Shins' version the children singing is much better. I'm pleased I bought that "Christmas Rules" CD a couple of years ago. The Shins' version is on that. Don't hear that on the radio, however. (I also try and sing along to "Oh Holy Night", and pretend I can hit that "Fall on your knees"...ultra high part. Love Michael Crawford's version of that much better than Josh Groban's. His doesn't seem to get as much air time, however. What really grates is Celine Dion singing "John's song". Ditto Lee Ann Rimes singing Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree. She just sounds boozy. Lee Ann, I mean. There's too many damn versions of too many songs. Nat King Cole's..."The Christmas Song" should be the only one played. IMO. No one else should ever touch that, yet they do!!)

I was going to say that I think your original post is referring to "Happy Christmas".

Yeah, you're correct. It's Paul singing what the children practiced all year long!!! I guess it might take a year to remember that ding dong stuff.!! The children, however, sing beautifully on "Happy Xmas" (Was Is Over).

I get what you were saying about Nat King Cole...maybe he's also the only one who should sing the Chestnut song ("Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...), my favorite secular Chrissy song
