Darkroom
-
Darkroom is a strange little song , on the one hand it might be fun to join Paul in it , and then again it might be a bit sinister and creepy ? Years ago i had a girlfriend who had one she like Linda was a photographer and i used to go in it quite a bit and watch her develope her pictures . It always felt a bit otherworldly with it's low red glow and chemical smell . I always thought this song could be about the fear of the Dark and the unknown . What do you think it means ? Come a come along with me to my darkroom :
-
Hey baby... come along with me to my darkroom... and let's see what develops. I always dug that freaky tune.
-
I've always like that song too...and with that said, the Twin Freaks version blows the McC II version out of the water (in my humble opinion of course )
-
I can't remember what the song is called but Darkroom sounds like a song i remember from childhood that went : Where coming to take you away - ha-ha Think it could be a Goons song ? I suspect Maxwell and his Silver Hammer maybe lurking in Paul's Darkroom , which is why it does sound creepy to me . Paul's always had a bit of a sinister side in some of his songwriting ?

Found the song it reminds me of Napoleon XIV - They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha Ha (1966) UK # 4 single

I always liked Darkroom. Recently, someone said it was about Paul's short stint in Japanese prison, but I don't know. I used to listen to the album McCartney II at night before falling asleep stoned and Darkroom was just my favorite especially in the dark.

Sounds very suggestive, dont you think...?! hehe add a space in the work 'darkroom' and the song could have slightly different connotations Josh

Although Paul did do a little work on the album post -Japan, most of the album was recorded in the summer of 1979,six months before the Japan trip so you're right to be sceptical.
-
yeah, I prefer the Twin Freaks version too..but it's always been a favourite of mine..

Great song! McCartney II has a few of those sort of oddball rockers. I guess even "Why Don't We Do It in the Road" could be in that same category too.

Never knew that before! Amazing how Paul can knock off an experimental solo album immediately after making one of his rockiest efforts in Back to the Egg and just before a Wings tour. Show just how talented he is.

Well I guess my mind is in the gutter... I always pictured it was the broom closet down in the basement at work....where he took Peggy Sue for a little quickie.... I don't think it's sinister... he is kind of laughing a bit in the song.... It reminds of the laughing in I Am the Walrus, a little trippy.... I love love love the ending... ha ha ha ha ho ho ho ho ha

I always thought it was the broom closet where he snuck a joint. I was doing that a lot when I discovered the album and song.

That's it! I just saw a pic of little James hanging onto his pant leg in one of those Darkroom vids... He and Linda must have snuck down to the "darkroom" to grab a quick minute away from the kids.... dooby dooby dooooooo.... Ha ha ha ah ho ho ho ho ha
-
IF James was hanging on his legs, they didn't succeed in sneaking away...
-
So it's not sinister or creepy but it might be a noughty little getaway for Paul and Linda ?

At the very end there is a cute pic of James hanging onto Paul...
-
thanks for that. I bet most missed the pic since it comes at the end after the credits. I love McCartney II. still my favorite Paul album. (Yes, I love every song on it).
-
Pretty groovin' bass-line. Trippy.

"Darkroom" has grown in stature over the years. Its now 1 of Paul's hidden gems. It should have been released as a double-A side single, with "Bogey Music" on the flip side.
