It's The Singing That Makes RAM Paul's Best Album

Was listening to RAM this morning and his singing is way beyond brilliant it's like he's painting with his voice , lots of colour just bursting out of his mouth . Even Linda's singing is good it's kind of kooky . Out of all my albums and I've over 500 I think I like the singing best on RAM , maybe only Bowie's Diamond Dogs comes close to my mind vocally
Don't think Paul will ever TOP - RAM when it comes to singing

I know I'm in a minority here, but I mostly disagree. While it's absolutely true that Paul's vocal cords were at their all-time peak in this period -- amazing range, ability to produce different sorts of tones, etc. -- many of his vocals on Ram are way overdone for my taste. Monkberry Moon Delight borders on unlistenable, and Back Seat of My Car is so over the top it's unintentionally hilarious. I actually don't think there's a vocal on Ram that's equal to the more straightforward performances on tunes like Maybe I'm Amazed and Every Night.

On a more general note I have always thought that one of the beauties of Macca songs is that he uses his voice to add depth, interest and colour to his musical canvas. Almost like his voice is an additional musical instrument. Many of the greats do this as well of course. Having written and recorded hundreds of songs I guess it is an on-going challenge for him to sound different as often as possible. He achieves this to huge success but sometimes misses the mark. Monkberry Moon delight is, as stated, a good example. The song is great but the vocals towards the end detracts from the song. Another example is the fabulous Wildlife track that descends to mediocrity at the end.

I'm with you on RAM. For me it's an album full of half finished ideas, song snatches (can I say that here?) and no focus. No argument about his singing or his voice on RAM, but BSOMC, Long Haired Lady and so many others are spoiled by unnecessary grandiose production and Linda's voice is mixed way to up front for me...I'm sorry, but...Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is the album's gem. Heart Of The Country another great one. Eat At Home, Smile Away, 3 Legs...it's all downhill for me I'm afraid.

For me, 'Ram' has always been my favourite album because of the MELODY. It's the most melodic album I've ever heard. Secondly, the lead vocals are great, and the vocal harmonies work really well too. There's not a poor track on there, but 'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is a masterpiece!

I think the Ram addicts have just stopped responding to me, lol. For the record, I do like Heat of the Country, Eat at Home and Two Many People. Smile Away starts grating on me after a while. But your mileage may vary.

That album is lightning in a bottle: energy jumps out at you, and it was his last great "voice" album.

Oh my! So sorry I missed that show, when was that! Love the Ram vocals...I have to say that I think my all time favorite Paul vocal is on India which you can't even buy
And the Oh Darlin vocal...those two popped in my mind as the best, however, I do love the entire RAM album and vocals. -
RAM continues to be my all-time favorite album ever. Ever. I loved it when I first played it in 1971 as a young teenager, and I love it now in my late 50's. Listen to it at least once a month for over 40 years. Yea, pretty decent little lp.

For me, 'Ram' is easily Paul's most melodic album & the work he did on the harmonies is unsurpassed. I believe Elton John said in the early 70s that Ram had the best harmonies on any album he's heard - & that is saying a lot! 'Dear Boy' alone if done by The Beatles would have been a Top 10 Beatles song ever. Its really a shame that critics didnt give Ram a chance sine it affected Paul's musical direction significantly. I would have loved for Paul to continue in the Ram direction throughout the 70s.

Agreed. You mean all-time favorite album of any artist, right? That's my opinion. Better than those Beatles!
