Rockshow : alt take
-
Found this today on you tube I dont know from where it was taken.
I kept repeating it the whole day!! It is really cool. I like more than the album version. the vocal, the bass, the guitars .. so good. -
Rock Show is a wonderful rock song, but I never understood why Paul made a so produced sound in the original track. I heard the remastered version from V&M 2014... it has a cleaner drum (great!)
-
Prefer the official album version.

I think its the version Wings recorded at Abbey Road studios in November 1974. It certainly sounds like Geoff Britton's drumming. Even at the time though Paul was saying that he wasn't happy with it, hence the remake a couple of months later in New Orleans.

Sounds like Juniors Farm meets Rockshow....LOL
-
Wow, this version just sucks all the life out of the song. I am so glad this isn't the one they released.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion like many didn't like Let It Be Naked compared to Let It Be. But can you tell us musically what sucked the life from this version?!! take in consideration this one misses tracks : guitar fill in solos, backing vocals (Linda, Denny) and other backing instruments. For me this track has more life in it than the overproduced version in the released album, this one has a great solo in the end, strong and clear sound of bass, Paul vocal and performance is more enjoyable here. Rock show could have been a very well known and famous Rock'nRoll song if it was not overproduced.

Exactly. The first version was taped in Abbey Road on Nov, 1st 1974. I quoted Paul's originale sentence in my book "Paul McCartney: Recording Sessions (1969-2013)" where I also included some anecdotes by engineer Alan O'Duffy about the VENUS AND MARS sessions.

Luca, I do have a copy of your excellent book although I was remembering the info from the Melody Maker Wings biography cuttings I have from late 1974. Returning to your book though, I don't see the recording date you've just specified for the November 1974 version of Rockshow. Did you discover that date since your book was published, and have you the recording dates for Love In Song & Letting Go from the same month? Thanks.

It rocks out hard at the end. I think it's great!

More than happy with the original version. One of my favourite Paul songs. Always like the stripped down alternate versions of songs, but then again, how many times do we hear a stripped down version that is greeted with 'should've been meated up'? Rockshow in its Venus and Mars/Live form can't be beat for me. Either way, in this alternate form or the official release, his voice is A1.

Thanks a lot for the compliments This date was captured on screen by someone from the video presentation of the VENUS AND MARS deluxe edition. So I inserted in the last reprint of the book made in September. We will finally have the official dates for LETTING GO and LOVE IN SONG as soon as the remaster is out I remember having reaqd somewhere that LOVE IN SONG was taped on November 6th, but I'm not sure about it. We have to wait and see.

^ Lets hope these Deluxe releases furnish us with a lot of recording dates (and new info) which wasn't available at the time due to 'business reasons'.

I always enjoy listening to a different (earlier) take of a song, especially Paul's or the Beatles'. Maybe it's the musician in me. No doubt Paul listened to this replay - and probably came up with ideas how to improve this take. I like listening to songs in process, especially well after the final master was released.

Well the missing guitars and backing vocals are part of the problem. I don't think the original was overproduced at all, but the sound is kind of muddy, which is unfortunate. But it was and is one of my favorite records to crank up good and loud.

We all believe Rock Show is a great composition, regardless of the ending result Most people like the original album version. me too , but I prefer the pure song for this song more (this alt Version) we have to think of something... we all are Paul McCartney's die hard fans(well most of us at least) why such an amazing song no one remembers outside Paul McCartney's fans now????? why when someone mention the 70's great rock tunes no one remembers this?? they all mention Led Zeppelin, Kiss, even George Harrison's early 70's songs.. but no one will say Rock show ?? the released version it is not badly produced , it is produced to be a pop song while it has more power and rock spirit inside. I could go on and on on many tracks but this is just an example... Paul is the best pop/rock composer in history, his output in 70's was amazing and maybe the best of all musicians, but the production was not up to the edge unfortunately.

A (badly) edited version of V&M/Rock Show was released as a single but it virtually sank without trace. Had it been a hit at the time I think the song would have been better known today.
