Midnight McCartney - Jazz Album
-
https://au.news.yahoo.com/entertainment/a/28934350/pizzarelli-revives-mccartney-obscurities-for-jazz/ "Pizzarelli, a popular guitarist known both for his own songs and collaborations with other artists, said the ex-Beatle himself came up with the idea for the album, "Midnight McCartney," which will come out on September 11. "'It might be interesting for you to do a few of my songs that are lesser known than some of the others,'" Pizzarelli quoted McCartney as telling him in a letter. "'I realize this may be a little immodest, if not pushy,'" he wrote, saying he hoped to hear his songs in a "'mellow jazz style.'" "

I just listened to Venus and Mars. That entire album could be jazzed up.

Sounds interesting at least. I'm having kind of a jazz week on my stereo right now. Well, lots of Miles Davis, I think he was a bit like a jazz McCartney in a way, where stylistic boundaries never gets in the way of going in twenty directions all at once. Many of his records aren't jazz exactly. In the 60s-70s he subtitled his albums with 'new directions in music' by Miles Davis Well, "Midnight McCartney"... is it coctail jazz? Some interesting covers like "Some People Never Know" from "Wild Life".

Thanks! Going to go & check it out right now. (actually listening to Heart of the Country...sounds pretty much the same while he sings but then gets some jazzy piano)

I hope that these are "obscure" tracks, other press releases have mentioned Maybe I am Amazed, Hi, Hi, Hi --both great songs but not exactly obscure. Whoops, I read the whole release. Silly Love Songs, Coming Up and others are not obscure. Nonetheless, I look forward to this release.

McCartney mention "Love in the Open Air" in the letter. To me it seems like a hint but I can't see it in the tracklist.

I don't think the entire tracklist is showing.

This project kind of reminds me of the Cimaron's 'Raggaebility' album which featured several Macca songs. Only now its jazz instead of reggae. Oh well, that's more income for Paul's song publishing company.
-
So that's what this project comes down to. Money (That's What I Want).
ops:
-
no, that's not on the tracklist either. haha...joking!
-
Yep, I tried to find the tracklist other places and it seems to me that there are 12 songs and I don't think "Love in the Open Air" is on the record.
-
I normally hate jazz, but I like this guy's Macca songs!
-
McCartney's own "Jazz Street" song is one of his best B sides and instrumentals ever. I believe he put it out in the early seventies.
-
I can't say I remember a "Jazz Street" b-side. I googled it and found an outtake from the "Red Rose Speedway" sessions. I wonder if McCartney has listened to masterworks like "Sketches of Spain" and "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis. "Kind of Blue". He seems a bit more show tunes and standards maybe.
-
Have to listen later... Sounds great!
-
Macca actually sent a letter to jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli suggesting this album. A dozen McCartney songs in a jazz style. Comes out 9/11 http://mediakits-showcase.concordmusicgroup.com/p/midnight-mccartney/

Wow...sounds interesting and appealing, might be a real treat...wish the tunes covered were a bit more obscure. This won't just be a novelty item. Like it when Macca comes up with new ideas for albums of his work, as he does frequently.
-
FFS...again with the same old "dial 'em up" predictable song choices. So annoying.

It makes it a bit more interesting because of the direct line to McCartney. It's not just cover version number ninety thousand of "Yesterday". In 2000, according to the liner notes, he 'suggested and authorized' "Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool" by La Fl没te Enchant茅e Quartet. It is not essential but has some nice moments with arrangements for flute from "The Family Way," "Liverpool Oratorio Suite", "A Leaf" and "Distractions" (from "Flowers in the Dirt").
