"Blackbird" is Macca's lyrical masterpiece, imo. The contrasting images (light - dark black night), evokes sadness & joy at the same time, the vision of freedom without over-sentimentality, etc. 'Yesterday' gets all the press, but "Blackbird" should be required learning for any song writer/musician. Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life You were only waiting for this moment to arise Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these sunken eyes and learn to see All your life You were only waiting for this moment to be free Blackbird fly, blackbird fly Into the light of the dark black night Blackbird fly, blackbird fly Into the light of the dark black night Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life You were only waiting for this moment to arise You were only waiting for this moment to arise You were only waiting for this moment to arise

        Mrs. Pepper:

I agree with all of you So many beautiful lyrics to choose from. I've wanted to ask this for a long time but was scared of sounding silly but oh well...here it goes ops: What's it like to be a (straight) guy and listen to Paul McCartney? Haha, sounds weird I know but I was thinking, can you imagine (guys) what it's like to listen to Paul's beautiful songs, voice, lyrics while you actually also think he's gorgeous, handsome, beautiful and all that? It's not that I think of that every time I listen to his music. I like his music for the music. But I must admit it happens during Calico Skies and "I will hold you for as long as you like" that I'm like "Sigh...I wish you would". And I guess you guys never think of that, lol. So sometimes it makes a difference to be a male or a female Paul fan. Hope this is not too off topic. Just all these beautiful lyrics you posted, some of them love songs, made me remember this question I've had for a long time now.

I can answer that question from my point of view. Paul has a very beautiful and versatile voice. When I hear him sing songs like Wanderlust or Calico Skies I get goosebumps, I sometimes cry. This man is my hero and I don't care what anybody else thinks.

Beautifully said CMack. And I understand what you mean. Voices can touch you no matter if male or female. I only recently found me crying at a concert where a female singer was singing her heart out. I had never heard or seen her before, so this is what only the voice did. Then if the person is your hero it makes the whole thing even more powerful. I understand, thank you for explaining. (And of course you had to use the word "hero" to remind me of something ;))

"Too Much Rain" is also brilliant: "It's not right in one life too much rain You know the wheels keep turning Why do the tears run down your face? We used to hide away our feelings But for now tell yourself it won't happen again It's too much for anyone Too hard for anyone Who wants a happy and peaceful life You've gotta learn to laugh Smile when you're spinning round and round Sigh as you think about tomorrow Make a vow that your gonna be happy again It's all right in your life no more rain"

Why shouldn't straight guys listen to him? Even if the Beatles had so many female fans in the 60s like a boygroup, for me, they are just great rock-music. The same with the Rolling Stones, Who, Kinks and so on. They all wrote great love-songs and sentimental sad songs. I love these songs, and I also love the Helter Skelter pure sex, drugs & rock'n'roll-type of songs. I don't care for the looks of the band-members or anything like that, I just love the music and think they are great personalities and some kind of role-models, not only for me, but for most men. Which man doen't want to live their lives, making great rock-music, having pretty women, power and money (& drugs + alcohol). I hope you get what I'm trying to say. 😉 If you listen to Paul singing Calico Skies, you wish that he would be there and hold you for the rest of your life. I just enjoy the song, the voice and the lyrics, but instead of thinking of him, I think of a girl I like and "transfer" the lyrics to her.

Nobody said straight guys shouldn't listen to him. Mrs. Pepper just wanted too hear from some straight guys as to what Paul & his music does to them. You explained your POV very well.

Let It Be When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom: Let it be And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me Speaking words of wisdom: Let it be Let it be, let it be Let it be, let it be Whisper words of wisdom: Let it be And when the broken hearted people Living in the world agree There will be an answer: Let it be For though they may be parted there is Still a chance that they will see There will be an answer: Let it be Let it be, let it be Let it be, let it be There will be an answer: Let it be Let it be, let it be Let it be, let it be Whisper words of wisdom: Let it be Let it be, let it be Let it be Yeah let it be Whisper words of wisdom: Let it be And when the night is cloudy There is still a light that shines on me Shine on until tomorrow Let it be I wake up to the sound of music Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom Let it be

Though some things in life are hard to bear Don't let it bring you down Should the sands of time run out on you Don't let it bring you down don't go down, don't go underground Things seem strange but they change How they change Up and down your carousel will go so don't let it bring you down When the price you have to pay is high Don't let it bring you down (Co-written with Denny Laine) The song MY SOUL co-written with Nitin Sawhney has pretty good lyrics, too

I'm a straight man and a fellow disciple of Paul. I have a hard time telling people how amazing I think paul is, because, if you enjoy the work of one person enough, people begin to question. Think that we obsess. I'll put it this way, people are allowed to have a favorite musician, aswell as a favorite Beatle. But Paul is one of my favorite people. I have respect and appreciation for him. His music and his actions are often teachers on how to treat others and the ones we love. He can make us happy when were sad, peaceful in times of stress or he can help us rock when were relaxed. He is a genius, a master musician, a humanitarian and a good man. He is not without flaw, but none of us are. He is somebody that everybody should appreciate. That is why he is loved by many around the world and by me. Oh, and From A Lover To A Friend is a pretty powerful song

IS IT BETTER TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER THAN TO GO FOR A WALK IN THE DARK? IS IT BETTER TO LOVE THAN TO GIVE IN TO HATE? YEAH, WE'D BETTER TAKE GOOD CARE OF EACH OTHER, AVOID SLIPPING BACK OFF THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW, IT'S BETTER BY FAR THAN GETTING STUCK IN A FIGURE OF EIGHT.

YES! This song is quite something, also his vocal delivery in the songs accentuates the meaning somewhat. Anyway from Chaos and Creation is a very strong song. The lyrics are very emotional, you wonder who he calling out to? A departed person? John? Linda? George? All of them? Generally speaking all the lyrics on Chaos and Creation must rank as some of his best, period.

The wonder of it all baby, the wonder of it all. Too many people losing weight. In two lines Paul sings about the greatness of the world and the sadness of the world.

Mull of Kintyre, Oh mist rolling in from The sea my desire, is always to be here Oh mull of Kintyre Far have I travelled and much have I seen Dark distant mountains and valleys of green Past painted deserts, the sunset's on fire As he carries me home to the Mull of Kintyre Chorus Sweep through the heather like deer in the glen Carry me back to the days I knew then , Nights when we sang like a heavenly choir Of the life and the times of the Mull of Kintyre Chorus Smiles in the sunshine and tears in the rain Still take me back where my mem'ries remain . Flickering embers grow higher and higher As they carry me back to the Mull of Kintyre Chorus
