      Mr. Spock:

Here we sit, two lonely old people Taking our lives away Bit by bit, two lonely old people Keeping the time of day Great, underrated song... It really is nice to see that on this, Paul's 71st birthday, he hasn't turned into the image painted in these lyrics.

Isn't it "eaking" our lives away? As in, eking, or stretch out... like they're appreciating every minute... P.S. I agree, one of the best songs

        Kathryn O:

The End of the End took my breath away and made me stop what I was doing to listen to it the first time I heard it. "On the day that I die I'd like bells to be rung And songs to be sung..." and then how he talked in one verse about blankets that lovers had lain on and in another verse about blankets that children have played on.

I can't listen to that song, I don't want to think about Paul's death!

When all our friends have gone and we're alone, There's nothing left to shout about, Together we'll explore the great unknown. I'd say we won't be going out tonight, Let tonight be the one that we remember, When love is all that stays, Only love remains? Only love remains? One of the most beautiful love song that a man has wrote for his wife.

          Please, come back soon!!!!

I really love those lyrics. I also love Paul's response to John's infamous song about him "how do you sleep? I love how he defends his love for Linda. it was like Paul saying to John " Hey mate why does it bother you? that I am happily married and is my happiness really a threat to you? is that how you truly feel about me? at least that's how I interpreted the lyrics below. Dear Friend, throw the wine I 'm in love with a friend of mine Really, truly, young and newly wed Are you a fool is it true? Are you afraid is it true? Dear Friend

I think The Song We Were Singing from the album Flaming Pie has some of McCartney's best lyrics.

It probably got mentioned earlier in this thread, but the lyrics to "Here Today" have always struck me as nearly perfect -- especially moving because he doesn't pretend that he and John always got along. And that makes the final verse all the more shivers-inducing. And the lyrics from "You Tell Me" are brilliant -- spare, simple, slightly enigmatic but haunting.

"The only true patriotism, the only rational patriotism is loyalty to the nation all the time, loyalty to government when it deserves it."

Agreed on both counts -- but especially on You Tell Me, which is such a gorgeous song. On Here Today, the one line I don't really like is "What about the time we cried?" It's just a bit too over the top -- trying too hard to be moving. And it takes you out of the song where you wonder, "Did they really cry?" I think Paul's personal songs are always best when he dials it back a bit. I like his lyrics for Friends to Go, especially this section: I've been waitin till the danger past, I don't know How long the storm is gonna to last, if we're gonna carry on I'll been waiting on the other side, till your friends are gone The whole theme of the song -- hiding out from your partner's friends -- is something I think everyone can relate to at one time or another. Great song.

Well "this" is wrong. I still have my original vinyl V&M from 1975, and the lyrics are printed on the back cover: It's "eaking." And if you actually listen to the song, there's no doubt. He does not sing "taking."

I really love the lyrics to the song "Waterfalls" I wonder did Paul write these lyrics for his children as sort of like a cautionary tale. Don't go jumping waterfalls, please keep to the lake People who jump waterfalls, sometimes can make mistakes And I need love, yeah, I need love Like a second needs an hour, like a raindrop needs a shower Yeah, I need love every minute of the day And it wouldn't be the same if you ever should decide to go away - WATERFALLS
